Feast of Christ the King
The HBO series Game of Thrones is a critical and ratings success. It
has now completed two seasons and a third is on its way in the spring.
The genre show has gained wide appeal, something that doesn't
always happen in the convoluted world of fantasy genre. Since the
beginning, fan sites have sprung up alongside the official HBO
website to help new viewers keep track of the characters. The HBO
site even includes a family tree so that viewers can remember who is
connected to whom. The basic plot of the show involves the struggle
to hold on to power in a kingdom that is threatened by internal strife
and natural disaster. Various heirs and other nobles form and reform
alliances in an attempt to stay alive. The court intrigue is shown in all
its bloody detail.
The Gospel on this feast of Christ the King gives an entirely
different picture of kingship. We only have a small snippet from
John's Passion narrative, but it is enough to remind us of the entire
story that we hear on Good Friday. In John's Gospel, Jesus is
completely in charge. He is no victim of the crowds. He willingly lays
down his life and he takes it up again. Unlike the characters in Game
of Thrones, the members of Christ's family are not scheming for
power behind the back of the ruler, because his kingdom is not of this
world. He reigns beyond the power of any foe to depose him.
Being an attendant of Christ (to use the word from the Gospel) is
to listen to the voice of the King. As our prayers tell us today, he rules
over "a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a
kingdom of justice, love and peace." So many television viewers are
enamored of Game of Thrones. Hopefully our example will invite
others to be a part of the kingdom of Christ.

Maintenance Position Open
St. Thomas More is seeking a full-time maintenance person to
work days with regular hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The
ideal candidate must also be available to occasionally work at
odd hours and be on-call 24/7, have a basic knowledge of
electrical systems, plumbing, pumps & motors and HVAC.
In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook is
required. Candidate must hold a valid driver’s license.

GOODBYE, OLD FRIEND!
After the Noon Mass on November
11th, I was greeting the parishioners
as they were leaving the church.
I became aware of someone
standing next to me, apparently
wanting to talk.
As I finished saying goodbye to
those who attended Mass, the person
came up to me and said, “Father, the
cross is ready to come down!”
Well, I tell you what, that certainly
got my attention!
If you remember, Sunday,
November 11th was an incredibly
windy day. The wind was as sustainable gusts of over 50
miles per hour. Those winds had worked at the structure of
the cross until they snapped a couple of the weld joints.
From there, it was just a matter of time before the swaying
introduced fatigue in the metal and it began to tear.
The police and fire department were on the job quite
quickly. They assessed the situation and we all agreed that
the cross could, indeed, come crashing down at any
moment.
Because of that, barricades were brought in from the town
and a large area was cordoned off. From there, the prayers
began that the cross might make it through the night.
The next day, Monday, November 12th, a construction
company came out and, with a crane, cut the cross off of
the bell tower and lowered it, placing it on a truck to be
carted off. The cross was damaged well beyond repair. It
must be replaced.
As we meet with architects about the best possible
replacement, I will keep you informed. With winter coming
up soon, I do not expect anything to be done for a few
months, at least.
What a metaphor for us on the Feast of Christ the King.
Sin has damaged us through years of wear and tear. We
are in danger of falling. Who knows who we can harm
when we do.
That is why we need to hope for the realization of the
vision of the prophet Daniel:
His dominion is an everlasting dominion that
shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be
destroyed.
Christ is our King. If we are faithful to Him, He will call us
to Himself one day. He will remake us, restore us, deliver
us.
Christ is the King, O earth, Rejoice!
FORTY HOURS
For the past few weeks, we have
been asking you to mark your
calendars for our annual Forty Hours
devotions.
Well, the time is now upon us.
As we celebrate the Feast of Christ
the King, we open our Forty Hours
devotions. The Eucharist will be left
exposed on the altar after the Noon
Mass today (Sunday, November 25th) and after the 8:30
a.m. Masses on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
The Eucharist, when it is exposed, should never be left
alone. Please try to come to church some time during the
day and spend time in silent adoration of the Lord.
At 7:00 p.m. tonight, Monday, and Tuesday, we will have
closing services. Our guest speaker is Fr. Rick Holy.
At Tuesday evenings devotions, we will have a
Eucharistic Procession in the church.
This is the last week of Ordinary Time and we are
preparing ourselves to enter in the Season of Advent. As
we reflect upon the end of time, let us do all that we can to
be ready to greet Christ, our King.
I hope to see you in church the next few days!
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he
was going to, after the worship service, ask the
congregation to come up with more money than they were
expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he
was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and
a substitute had been brought in at the last minute.
The substitute wanted to know what to play.
“Here's a copy of the service,” he said impatiently. “But
you'll have to think of something to play after I make the
announcement about the finances.”
During the service, the minister paused and said,
“Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof
repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need
$4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more,
please stand up.”
At that moment, the substitute organist played The Star
Spangled Banner.
And that is how the substitute became the regular
organist!

Thoughts on Living Stewardship
Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
The Gospels clearly show the political maneuvering between
Roman rulers and Jewish religious leaders; Jesus was a puzzle
to them all. Pilate “found no fault in him.” Jesus ruled by
neither violence nor oppression; he simply witnessed to God’s
truth. Anyone seeking this truth has only to listen and respond
to become part of the kingdom of God.
This week, stand up for those who have no voice. Send a letter,
or an e-mail on behalf of anyone being treated unjustly.
Children’s Choir
Any children of the parish in grades 2 through 8 are invited to
join the Children’s Choir.

Christmas Food Baskets
Due to your generosity, 90 families were provided with all of the
fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
While we thank you on their behalf, we are busy getting ready to
prepare and distribute Christmas baskets in three weeks.
Our goal is to put the following food items in each basket:
Canned Yams • Canned Corn • Canned Pineapple
Flour • Brown Sugar • Cookie Mix • Brownie Mix
Macaroni & Cheese • Coffee or Tea • Hot Cocoa Mix
In addition, we would like to be able to give each child a
new hat and pair of gloves.

Vocations Committee
We continue to have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on
Tuesdays from 9:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. You are given this
opportunity, this privilege, to pray for the needs of your family
or the serious evils and wrongs in the world.
With the number of parishioners here, the Chapel should be
filled throughout the day, but that is not the case as you must
know, and the sparse attendance is very worrisome. The
exposed Eucharist must never be left unattended.
God’s help is implored steadily, deeply, in the Chapel petition
book with all kinds of needs and problems. Can you not give
our Lord just one hour a week and talk with Him before the
Blessed Sacrament.
It would be very helpful for us to know your name and the
time that we can count on you to be there You can drop this
information in the collection basket.
Christmas Flowers

Emmaus Program
January 2013
The Emmaus Program is a four week adult Formation Program
for parishioners, teachers and catechists.
In January, Fr. Gerald Schweitzer, Pastor of Sacred Heart
Parish in Wanatah, will give a four week presentation on the
“The Catechism —An Authentic
Fruit of the Second Vatican Council”
The four-week series will be on Thursday evenings
January 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st
