Our Executive Board<br />

The Executive Directors who were members of the Executive<br />

Board during the year <strong>and</strong> as at 27 June 20<strong>11</strong> were:<br />

Harpal Kumar MA MEng MBA<br />

Chief Executive (Chair of Executive Board <strong>and</strong><br />

Scientific Executive Board)<br />

Harpal joined <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Technology Limited as Chief<br />

Executive in 2002. In addition to this role, he became Chief<br />

Operating Officer of <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong> in July 2004, before<br />

becoming Chief Executive in April 2007. Harpal is Chairman of<br />

the Beatson Institute for <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>and</strong> is a Trustee of<br />

the Institute for <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong>. He also serves on the Boards<br />

of the National <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Institute <strong>and</strong> the <strong>UK</strong> Clinical<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Collaboration. He co-chairs the National Awareness<br />

<strong>and</strong> Early Diagnosis Initiative <strong>and</strong> is Deputy Chair of the<br />

Advisory Board for the <strong>Cancer</strong> Reform Strategy in Engl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Aisling Burn<strong>and</strong> MBE<br />

Executive Director, Policy <strong>and</strong> Public Affairs<br />

Aisling joined the Charity in October 2009. She is responsible<br />

for keeping cancer on the political agenda across the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

in Europe. This includes developing our policies on cancer,<br />

science <strong>and</strong> charity issues, influencing politicians <strong>and</strong> civil<br />

servants <strong>and</strong> campaigning alongside our supporters to<br />

positively influence the issues which matter to patients.<br />

Iain Foulkes PhD<br />

Executive Director, Strategy <strong>and</strong> Planning<br />

Iain was appointed as the Executive Director, Strategy <strong>and</strong><br />

Planning in August 2009. He is responsible for helping to<br />

shape the long-term strategic direction of the organisation<br />

<strong>and</strong> to ensure we have effective strategies to meet our<br />

ambitious goals.<br />

Professor Peter Johnson MA MD FRCP<br />

Chief Clinician<br />

Peter is Chief Clinician for <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong>. He has<br />

responsibility for the strategy <strong>and</strong> shape of the Charity’s clinical<br />

activities, both in clinical research <strong>and</strong> in the wider context of<br />

cancer prevention, diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment.<br />

Professor Nic Jones PhD<br />

Chief Scientist<br />

Nic joined <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong> in February 20<strong>11</strong> as Chief<br />

Scientist. He is responsible for helping to develop our scientific<br />

strategy, ensuring that it is leading-edge <strong>and</strong> monitoring its<br />

implementation. He is Director of the Manchester <strong>Cancer</strong><br />

<strong>Research</strong> Centre <strong>and</strong> was previously Director of the Paterson<br />

Institute in Manchester.<br />

Sarah Lyness MA<br />

Executive Director, Communications <strong>and</strong> Information<br />

Sarah joined the Imperial <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Fund in 1997.<br />

She developed <strong>and</strong> launched the <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong> br<strong>and</strong><br />

in 2002, building it to be the most loved <strong>UK</strong> charity br<strong>and</strong>.<br />

She joined the Board, first as co-Director of Fundraising <strong>and</strong><br />

Marketing before taking responsibility for communicating<br />

with <strong>and</strong> informing people about cancer <strong>and</strong> the work of<br />

<strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong>.<br />

Lynne Robb BSc ACA<br />

Chief Financial Officer <strong>and</strong> Executive Director,<br />

Corporate Resources<br />

Lynne joined <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong> as Finance Director in 2002.<br />

Her role has exp<strong>and</strong>ed to become Chief Financial Officer <strong>and</strong><br />

Executive Director of Corporate Resources, which includes<br />

Property, Finance, Treasury <strong>and</strong> Procurement for the<br />

organisation.<br />

Elizabeth Sideris BA MSc<br />

Executive Director, Human Resources<br />

Elizabeth Sideris was appointed as the Executive Director<br />

for Human Resources in August 2009. She is responsible<br />

for supporting the Charity in delivering the people related<br />

agenda <strong>and</strong> for facilitating the development of a performance<br />

<strong>and</strong> learning culture to enable the Charity to achieve its<br />

strategic objectives.<br />

Peter Sneddon PhD BSc DPhil(Oxon) <br />

Executive Director, <strong>Research</strong> Operations <strong>and</strong> Funding<br />

Peter joined the Charity in December 2008. He is responsible<br />

for the funding of our broad range of basic, translational <strong>and</strong><br />

clinical research. This includes all of our research funding<br />

committees <strong>and</strong> the funding of our Institutes, Centres <strong>and</strong><br />

Drug Development Office.<br />

Richard C Taylor<br />

Executive Director, Fundraising <strong>and</strong> Supporter Marketing<br />

Richard joined the Imperial <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Fund as Retail<br />

Director in April 1998. He is responsible for the five-year<br />

fundraising strategy which drives income to support the<br />

Charity’s long-term ambitions.<br />

Clare Shepherd BA<br />

General Counsel<br />

Clare joined <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>UK</strong> as Interim Legal Director<br />

in 2009. In February 20<strong>11</strong> she was appointed to the newlycreated<br />

role of General Counsel. Clare is responsible for the<br />

Charity’s assurance activities including Legal, Risk Management,<br />

Health <strong>and</strong> Safety, Internal Audit <strong>and</strong> Secretariat. The General<br />

Counsel is not a member of the Executive Board but<br />

attends Executive Board meetings.<br />
