Forensics:
These Friars will compete in the National Catholic Forensics
League Grand National Tournament in Washington, D.C. over
the Memorial Day weekend:

Choir:
The Fenwick Choir received a 1st place rating at the
Northwestern University/ North Shore Festival of Music Contest
in March. Members of the Choir are Marco Candido ’03,
Jennifer Casillas ’06, Colleen Curtin ’05, Lacey Defazio ’06,
Michael Domanski ’05, Caitlin Ferrara ’05, Ida Grech ’05,
Lizzy Henricks ’03, Caroline Koch ’06, Emily Mannix-
Slobig ’05, David Monteagudo ’04, Katrina Petrauskas ’05,
Mattia Pezza ’05, Emma Real ’05, Tracy Simmons ’05,
and Laura Urani ’06. Moderator is Suzanne Senese.
Scholastic Bowl:
The varsity team won their IHSA regional and finished in the
state’s “Sweet Sixteen.” Moderator is Tom Draski.
Scientific Sessions:
Eight seniors and teacher Caryn Putra attended a conference
sponsored by the American Heart Association for students
interested in pursuing careers in medical research. They heard
presentations from doctors and nurses involved in cardiovascular
medicine and saw displays of new technology from
scientific companies.
Published Poets:
The works of Georgia Schulte ’04 and Elizabeth Boyle ’06
were chosen to be included in “A Celebration of Young Poets.”
Blackfriars Guild presented “Nicholas Nickleby” in
November, Banua ’03 in February, and “Me and My Girl” in April.
Synchronized Skating:
Stephanie Orchard ’04 won first place at the National
Synchronized Ice Skating Competition and qualified to compete
in the International French Cup Skating Competition.
Oratorical Contests:
• First place winners in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Speech
Contest – Kate Augustyn ’04 (Forest Park Post) and
Courtney Barth ’05 (Berwyn Post).
• Oak Park Optimist Club Oratorical Contest
first place winner: Brandon Smith ’05

FENWICK WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING COMPETITION

For 4th Year in a Row!
The Fenwick WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and
Engineering) Team has won first place in state competition
for the fourth consecutive year. The team scored 485 out of
a possible 500.
Three out of seven individual state championships also
were won by Fenwick students. Competition takes place
in biology, chemistry, computers, English, math, physics,
and engineering graphics.
• Taso Giannopoulos ’03 placed 1st in computers. He
also placed 5th in the state in chemistry.
• Damian Kozbur ’04 won the physics championship. He
also placed 6th in math.
• Patrick Lange ’04 placed 1st in English.
Seven other members of the team also placed among the
top six spots in their categories.
Steven Kurtz ’03 placed 3rd in math.
Matthew Gray ’03 placed 3rd in physics.
Matthew Drago ’03 also placed 3rd in physics.
Nicholas Kohout ’04 placed 3rd in computers.
Andrew Lisy ’03 placed 4th in computers.
Alex Herskovic ’03 placed 5th in physics.
Joseph Renze, ’05 placed 6th in biology.
Coach of the WYSE team is Ramzi Farran, science teacher
at Fenwick and former winner of a Golden Apple teaching
award.
