2003 Accipiter Award to
Thomas H. Morsch ‘49
May 9 - Union League Club of Chicago
Tom Morsch, winner of the 2003 Accipiter
Award for Meritorious Service to the Legal
Profession, says that he has greatly enjoyed
his long private law practice. What has
brought him even more satisfaction through
the years is his pro-bono work for clients who
are disadvantaged or the objects of
discrimination. He also encouraged other
lawyers to do the same.
Now a successor with the Northwestern University School of
Law, the encouragement starts earlier; his audience is at the
very beginning of their legal careers. Tom also leads the Small
Business Opportunity Center at Northwestern, where students
(with Tom’s guidance) provide legal services to start-ups and
not-for-profit companies.
After Fenwick, Tom graduated from University of Notre Dame
and earned his law degree from Northwestern. He began his
career in 1955 with Liebman, Williams, Bennett, Baird & Minow
in Chicago and from 1972 to 1997 was a partner with Sidley &
Austin. His many honors include the Chicago Legal Clinic,
Cardinal Bernadin Award in 1999 and the Public Interest Law
Initiative, Special Pro Bono Recognition Award, also in 1999.
used by students and most guests who attend special events.
Additional plans are for a large cross, a formal portrait of
Bishop Dominic Fenwick, and banners depicting the four pillars
of Dominican Life (prayer, study, community, and service).
