Trevor Skelly participates on both the forensics team and the Student Congress. He’s the Catholic League’s first place champion in Student Congress and will represent Fenwick and the Chicago Catholic League at the national level in May. Also, for three years running, he’s placed among the top three in the state in tennis doubles. He hopes someday to be in the diplomatic corps. Read more about Student Congress on page 5. Erin Lawless, varsity basketball player all four years, recently was named “Athlete of the Year” by the Chicago Sun-Times. She will play basketball for Purdue University in the fall, and plans to major in forensic science. Read more about Erin and her teammates on page 24. (On the cover, bottom photo) Rev. Success Success Success from Success all Success sides Success Success We didn’t choose the theme for this issue of the magazine; it chose us. Among the many successful seasons in Fenwick’s history, this one is still worth examining. From basketball to bowling, from speech competition to synchronized skating, from hockey to the Hall of Fame, from distinguished life service awards to letters of commendation for sportsmanship – students, faculty, alumni/ae, and parents all are setting new standards. As you well know, at Fenwick we understand that success is more than medals, trophies, promotions, and newspaper headlines. So in this issue, we will examine “success” in terms of the qualities that connect us to success. We’ll spotlight some of the people that demonstrate qualities such as motivation, commitment, preparation, perseverance, and satisfaction. What are the “Secrets of Success” We also come to a sad repetition of what it seems only too recently we had to do: honor one of the great Fenwick legends. In the last issue, we memorialized Fr. Malachy Dooley, O.P. In this issue, we say good-bye to Dan O’Brien ’34, who in March quietly stepped from this life into heaven, where no doubt he’s encouraging angels to run a little harder, swim a little faster or dive a little more precisely. Dan was a man who spent nearly his entire life at Fenwick, grew from a boy to a man, from an athlete who was injured to a coaching sensation. We remember him in this issue – and forever after. Finally, on a scale outside Fenwick, we find ourselves going to press amid a changing and unpredictable world. Whatever the circumstances, we would be remiss not to express our gratitude to all members of the Fenwick community who serve to keep us safe now and who have served in the past. In these times of strife and turmoil, why do we think, talk or read about anything else Fenwick has always believed that EDUCATION is important. Education and Faith: our best insurance against a mindless, value-less future. Educating the next generation to be the leaders our world will need – the Fenwick community is determined to succeed at that!
