The three newest members of the Fenwick Hall of Fame are (left to right): David Collins ’52, James Maddock ’53, and Bernard Judge ’57. The honorees were inducted at a convocation on Friday, April 4, and each spoke to students about his Fenwick experience. Dave Collins graduated from University of Notre Dame and earned his law degree from Harvard University. He was a top executive with Johnson and Johnson and its subsidiary, McNeil Pharmaceutical, maker of Tylenol, in 1982 when seven people died from ingesting Tylenol capsules contaminated with cyanide. Dave was one of a small group of company leaders dealing with the crisis. Out of concern for public safety, they decided to pull immediately all Tylenol products from stores everywhere in the world. Dave retired from Johnson & Johnson in 1988, served as president of Schering Plough Corporation’s Healthcare Products from 1989-1994, has taught courses in valuebased decision-making at graduate schools of business, and currently serves as a consultant in the healthcare industry. At the Hall of Fame convocation, Dave related that, in the days following the deaths from tainted Tylenol, he called upon two trusted friends from Fenwick who were lawyers in Chicago to help uncover the details of the incident. He advised students that Fenwick is “a place to build strong friendships that can help you through many situations – and a place to think about the values you will take with you through life.” Bernie Judge is Editor and Publisher of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer magazine. His extraordinary journalism career includes being Associate ✄ Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, Editor and General Manager of the City News Bureau of Chicago, and City Editor of the Chicago Tribune. Under his editorial guidance, newspaper stories, especially in the field of investigative reporting, have won numerous local and national awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. Bernie later served as a Pulitzer Prize judge. He is a member of the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and has been named “Man of the Year” by the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago. He is a Life Trustee of Fenwick and a recipient of Fenwick’s Accipiter Award for Meritorious Service to the Legal Profession. Bernie recalled for students how he transferred in during his sophomore year and struggled at first to catch up with Fenwick students who seemed far ahead academically. “Then a miracle began occurring. Despite a lot of resistance from me, I began to learn. Fenwick taught me how to think logically, how to address a problem and solve it, and how to do not just what’s correct – but also to do what’s right.” Jim Maddock is the founder and President of Maddock Industries and a national leader in the field of commercial heating/ventilation, and air conditioning. After a successful four years at Fenwick, where he was a class officer and leading player on the football and basketball teams, Jim attended University of Michigan. As Michigan’s quarterback, he played in the 1956 North-South Senior Bowl Football Classic. Jim has served as president of the Western Trades Association (an organization of mechanical construction firms) and on the Board of Directors of Pinnacle Bank. His charitable activities include Misericordia/ Heart of Mercy, Mercy Home, and the National Association of Down Syndrome. Jim described his years at Fenwick as “a composite of dedicated teachers, inspired coaches, and a cast of 250 characters who were my classmates.” He added, “Some things never change, they just stand the test of time.” Hall of Fame members are chosen for their standing as a Fenwick alumnus/a or friend, their outstanding personal contributions to society or Fenwick, and a lifestyle demonstrating high ethical, moral, and spiritual standards. THE CLASS OF 1960 DOES LUNCH In early December, 33 members of the class of 1960 met at The Loon Café for lunch and had such a good time, some stayed on past 9 p.m. They met again in March.
