Screen Settings
Screen settings are not only user preference settings; they are also application preference settings.
X applications may require the X server to be set up in a particular way in order for the application
to function properly. Screen settings are mainly comprised of the configuration for the Server Visual
and Window Mode.
Server Visual
Server Visual defines the color characteristics for the specified screen of the X server display. The
Server Visual is crucial to the successful execution of an X application because it defines the colors
that are available to an X application. It also determines the ability of the X application to change
the color maps based on the application’s requirements. Exceed onDemand offers 5 different Server
Visuals and an option to allow Exceed onDemand Server to automatically select the most appropriate
Server Visual based on the Windows desktop color depth.
Under most circumstances, users should let Exceed onDemand detect and select the Server Visual
that is most appropriate for the current X session. However, some X applications demand a specific
Server Visual that is not obvious to Exceed onDemand’s detection mechanism. Failing to comply will
result in an unsuccessful execution of the application, or it will be executed with poor visual quality.
In this case, users should override the Server Visual setting.
Exceed onDemand also supports multiple server visuals and multiple color depths, which is required
by some advanced X applications.
