Brake and Clutch Fluids<br />
When Did You Last Change Your Brake Fluid<br />
DOT3 fluid ought to be completely discarded, DOT4 (‘GBF4’) should be installed and<br />
replaced every 2 years, as recommended by manufacturers.<br />
An alternative, especially if you are replacing master cylinders, brake calipers and/or wheel<br />
cylinders, is to thoroughly flush out the pipes and install Silicone fluid (DOT5 ‘ABF’), which<br />
is ‘Non-Hygroscopic’, so it doesn’t promote rust problems in the hydraulic system. The<br />
bonus is that it won’t damage paint work. When silicone is in use it will provide years of<br />
trouble free braking and an end to the monotonous and expensive pastime of repairing or<br />
replacing worn or leaking hydraulic components.<br />
Racing Fluid (DOT5.1 ‘GBF5’) really is the ultimate in brake fluid. Its anti-boil properties<br />
mean that even when the brakes get hot the fluid will remain efficient, rather than boiling<br />
locally (such as in the calipers) into useless vapour. Ideal on the race track or when the<br />
brakes are used to their limits. Due to its high ‘Hygroscopic’ nature, DOT5.1 Racing fluid<br />
should be replaced annually otherwise the quality and effectiveness will be drastically<br />
reduced.<br />

Note: When bleeding the Minis brake system always start with the cylinder furthest away<br />
from the master cylinder, so for a RHD car this would mean start with the passenger side<br />
rear then the drivers side, keep the car as high a possible on the cylinder you are bleeding!<br />
Always use axle stands when working under your car, they may be little but the are still<br />
quite heavy, Safety first.<br />
