destroyed both cash crops and fish<strong>in</strong>g are <strong>the</strong> major impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil companies <strong>of</strong> which Shell bears <strong>the</strong> bulk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

responsibility.<br />

Boro later died dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Biafra war. His bid to liberate <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>orities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south-south from <strong>the</strong> perceived Igbo dom<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ambition caused by <strong>the</strong> amalgamation <strong>of</strong> 1914 rema<strong>in</strong>ed a mirage.<br />

After thirty years <strong>of</strong> Isaac Boro’s attempt to liberate <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />

groups <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> delta, Ken Saro Wiwa, erstwhile darl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

federal government who turned aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Abuja government <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to seek reparation for <strong>the</strong> carted away resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

<strong>the</strong> struggle. His <strong>in</strong>tention <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g a loose federal government or<br />

better still an <strong>in</strong>dependent state from <strong>Niger</strong>ia changed <strong>the</strong> politics <strong>of</strong><br />

fossil fuel <strong>in</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia through his Ogoni Bill <strong>of</strong> Rights.<br />

Ken Saro Wiwa and Changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oil Politics <strong>in</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia<br />

The battle to challenge <strong>the</strong> federal government and oil mult<strong>in</strong>ationals,<br />

mostly <strong>the</strong> SPDC, became <strong>the</strong> focal po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> environmentalists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Niger</strong> delta region. The <strong>in</strong>itiative, as mentioned above started with <strong>the</strong><br />

Isaac Boro movement aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> environmental degradation and<br />

landlessness caused by <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil companies with <strong>the</strong><br />

enabl<strong>in</strong>g environment created by <strong>the</strong> federal government without due<br />

regard to <strong>the</strong> plight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poor masses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. The need to<br />

declare a state with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian state as mentioned earlier brought<br />

about <strong>the</strong> security hardware provided by <strong>the</strong> Shell Company to <strong>the</strong><br />
