The current face-<strong>of</strong>f between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian military and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong><br />

<strong>Delta</strong> Militants is an evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that government keeps<br />

putt<strong>in</strong>g every feet wrong <strong>in</strong> its attempt to conta<strong>in</strong> a mismanaged<br />

situation. From <strong>the</strong> ignorant to <strong>the</strong> witless deployment <strong>of</strong> brute and<br />

tactless force dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> military era to <strong>the</strong> cunn<strong>in</strong>g and impervious<br />

diversion <strong>of</strong> attention from <strong>the</strong> real issues dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Obasanjo years;<br />

<strong>the</strong> present Yar’Adua government di<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>in</strong>action to obvious<br />

confusion on how to conta<strong>in</strong> a man-made crisis that would have been<br />

better managed if <strong>the</strong> country’s leaders have adopted s<strong>in</strong>cerity <strong>in</strong><br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> crisis.( Oparah, 2008).<br />

Conclusion<br />

From <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g analysis, so far <strong>the</strong> prevail<strong>in</strong>g scenario <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> depicts deprivation and worsen<strong>in</strong>g social condition <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong>ns; <strong>the</strong> ceaseless depletion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment<br />

occasioned by lawless and unregulated gas flar<strong>in</strong>g and oil spillages<br />

that have destroyed both farmlands and aquatic life; m<strong>in</strong>dless extrajudicial<br />

kill<strong>in</strong>gs as showcased <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>of</strong> Choba and Odi <strong>in</strong> 1999;<br />

<strong>the</strong> militarization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region through <strong>the</strong> counter<strong>in</strong>surgency<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> “Hakuri II” and <strong>the</strong> JTF and lack <strong>of</strong> government s<strong>in</strong>cerity<br />

and well def<strong>in</strong>ed policy framework to tackle <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> crisis<br />

The impression we get from <strong>the</strong> crisis situation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong><br />

<strong>Delta</strong> region is that <strong>of</strong> government under-appreciat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crisis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

region. This is rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that government seems to misread<br />
