Oil embargo imposed on <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America (USA) and The<br />

Ne<strong>the</strong>rland by <strong>the</strong> Arab states was a measure aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir Zionism<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Arab-Israeli conflicts, which made <strong>the</strong> emerg<strong>in</strong>g oil produc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

states <strong>in</strong> Africa prom<strong>in</strong>ent. As <strong>Niger</strong>ia became a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Non-<br />

Aligned Movement, rhtorically though,<strong>the</strong> policy <strong>of</strong> equidistance<br />

between <strong>the</strong> marximalists' communist and m<strong>in</strong>imalists' capitalist<br />

states started yield<strong>in</strong>g some positive political and economic<br />

developments. The munitions received from <strong>the</strong> Eastern bloc dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> civil war and <strong>the</strong> subsequent political understand<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

<strong>Niger</strong>ia and <strong>the</strong> communist states did not radically change direction <strong>of</strong><br />

trade. This was when <strong>the</strong> UK rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> only credible trad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

partner. The license accorded to SPDC gave <strong>the</strong> company more<br />

privilege over o<strong>the</strong>r oil companies that entered <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian market<br />

after <strong>the</strong> civil war. Though oil mult<strong>in</strong>ational corporations (MNCs) such<br />

as Chevron (Gulf oil), Texaco, Mobil, Agip, British Petroleum (BP) and<br />

later Africa Petroleum entered <strong>the</strong> market as competitors for <strong>the</strong><br />

exploration and production <strong>of</strong> oil, it is <strong>in</strong>structive to note that Shell<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> only credible oil company that determ<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> economic<br />

development and foreign policy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia till date.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> colonial era, British government, through both carrot and<br />

stick diplomacies, dispossessed people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir land. The colonial<br />
