Political Subjugation and Internal Colonialisation<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major political attractions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil revenue <strong>in</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia is<br />

that, it br<strong>in</strong>gs huge advantages and opportunities to those who hold<br />

<strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> political power, and through its hostility to those excluded<br />

from it, systematically and effectively disenfranchises <strong>the</strong> hoi-pol-loi,<br />

stripp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m also <strong>of</strong> basic human rights. S<strong>in</strong>ce state <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

manipulate and monopolise oil policy and revenue to <strong>the</strong> exclusion <strong>of</strong><br />

companies are surreptitiously and deliberately contribut<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

appall<strong>in</strong>g human rights situation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong>. Through <strong>the</strong><br />

provision <strong>of</strong> logistical and <strong>in</strong>frastructural support to <strong>the</strong> coercive arms<br />

<strong>of</strong> government, <strong>the</strong>y clearly demonstrate that as far as <strong>the</strong> oil region is<br />

concerned, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>of</strong> oil and repression are closely l<strong>in</strong>ked<br />

<strong>in</strong> such a way that power and repression flows simultaneously from<br />

both <strong>the</strong> barrel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gun and <strong>the</strong> barrel <strong>of</strong> crude oil (op.cit, 28).<br />
