Chapter VIII: The <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Crisis</strong>: <strong>Issues</strong> Challenges and Prospects<br />

bear <strong>the</strong> brunt <strong>of</strong> this <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>the</strong>ft <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> environmental<br />

degradation, political disenfranchisement, social dislocation and<br />

economic despoilation<br />

They are forced to witness how oil companies provide state-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>the</strong> art<br />

facilities for <strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir employees, most <strong>of</strong> whom are<br />

foreigners to <strong>the</strong>ir land, without adequate consideration for <strong>the</strong> needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hosts, even when do<strong>in</strong>g so is relatively cheap and feasible.<br />

They are for <strong>in</strong>stance, only will<strong>in</strong>g to build roads, if such would openup<br />

new and lucrative oil fields. They are able to generate electricity to<br />

power <strong>the</strong>ir numerous sites with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> communities, without<br />

bo<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g to l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>ir immediate hosts to <strong>the</strong> same grid, even when it<br />

is cost-effective to do so.<br />

Confronted by <strong>the</strong> stark realities <strong>of</strong> unemployment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir homelands<br />

even after gett<strong>in</strong>g education abroad, <strong>the</strong>re seems to be only one choice<br />

open to <strong>the</strong>m- take and sell <strong>the</strong> resources available, directly from <strong>the</strong><br />

pipel<strong>in</strong>es if necessary. Hence <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> pipel<strong>in</strong>e vandalisation,<br />

illegal bunker<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong>ir local imperatives <strong>of</strong> gun runn<strong>in</strong>g , cultgang<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g and militancy as defence mechanisms .Ey<strong>in</strong>la & Ukpo,<br />

(Op. cit, 20) put this succ<strong>in</strong>ctly;<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st government and multi-national oil<br />
