Chapter VIII: The <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Crisis</strong>: <strong>Issues</strong> Challenges and Prospects<br />

tension builds up due to <strong>the</strong> pressure <strong>of</strong> an unfulfilled aspiration or<br />

an unsatisfied urge or need. This when not arrested <strong>in</strong> time leads to<br />

frustration. Frustration when it builds up, leads to <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong><br />

suppressed emotions <strong>of</strong> anger which is <strong>of</strong>ten directed aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong><br />

party considered to be <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> deprivation <strong>of</strong> satisfaction. This<br />

strong emotion f<strong>in</strong>ally f<strong>in</strong>ds an outlet through aggressive and<br />

<strong>in</strong>variably violent disposition towards <strong>the</strong> environment. The armed<br />

<strong>in</strong>surrection aga<strong>in</strong>st military and civilian targets <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong>, by<br />

militant youths, directed aga<strong>in</strong>st government and <strong>the</strong> foreign oil<br />

companies is viewed <strong>in</strong> this perspective. The fact that frustration<br />

<strong>in</strong>variably leads to aggression is already amply demonstrated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Middle East by Palest<strong>in</strong>ians aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Israel, <strong>in</strong> apar<strong>the</strong>id<br />

South Africa by <strong>the</strong> ANC and o<strong>the</strong>r liberation movements, and <strong>in</strong><br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland by <strong>the</strong> IRA, among so many o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

One is not unm<strong>in</strong>dful here <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems and limitations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

frustration – aggression <strong>the</strong>sis, such as <strong>the</strong> fact that an aggressive<br />

response to frustration may be dependent upon <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual’s level<br />

<strong>of</strong> tolerance. Or <strong>the</strong> fact that frustration need not lead to aggression or<br />

that aggression need not always be negative and violent, but could<br />

also be positive and constructive. Howbeit, it is an established fact<br />

that frustration does produce a temporary <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> motivation, and<br />

thus lead to more vigorous respond<strong>in</strong>g (Bandura and Walters, 1963;<br />

135). And this is perceived to be <strong>of</strong> sufficient generality to provide a<br />

basis for <strong>the</strong> explanation <strong>of</strong> virtually all forms <strong>of</strong> aggressive behaviour,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g political violence.<br />
