<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational market without consider<strong>in</strong>g its impact on<br />

environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability is pert<strong>in</strong>ent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian government<br />

and <strong>the</strong> oil companies. As a result, no attention is be<strong>in</strong>g paid to <strong>the</strong><br />

agitations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil bear<strong>in</strong>g south-south geographical zone for a true<br />

federal system, among o<strong>the</strong>rs. The paper <strong>the</strong>n conclude that, unless<br />

government and <strong>the</strong> oil companies come up with holistic approach <strong>in</strong><br />

solv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> delta impasse, with special reference to <strong>the</strong> 1957<br />

Will<strong>in</strong>k’s Commission on M<strong>in</strong>ority rights, <strong>Niger</strong>ia will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to<br />

wallow <strong>in</strong> crises. Akpomuvire Mukoro on contend<strong>in</strong>g issues <strong>in</strong><br />

governance and democracy at <strong>the</strong> local government level <strong>in</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia:<br />

some reflections on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> delta question <strong>in</strong> chapter 3 argues that<br />

<strong>the</strong> formal <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong> government have failed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> governance<br />

quest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian state. And, that new vista <strong>of</strong> awaken<strong>in</strong>g has been<br />

brought to light that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous non-governmental organizations<br />

abound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our civil society and <strong>the</strong> communities possess <strong>the</strong><br />

necessary qualities for foster<strong>in</strong>g democratic governance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Niger</strong>ian state. Thus, with reference to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> region, it is<br />

until <strong>the</strong> communities and <strong>the</strong> people become more <strong>in</strong>volved by<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g stake holders at decid<strong>in</strong>g matters that affect <strong>the</strong>ir very<br />

existence and <strong>the</strong> constitution radically restructured that <strong>the</strong> teeth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> fiscal federalism, electoral fraud and money politics will<br />

becomes th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past. Chapter 4 on Fishers <strong>of</strong> Men: The Political<br />

Economy <strong>of</strong> Kidnapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> argues that both economic<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporation <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> global economy and forced political marriage <strong>in</strong><br />
