Chapter VIII: The <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Crisis</strong>: <strong>Issues</strong> Challenges and Prospects<br />

disease and squalor. These are <strong>of</strong> course nei<strong>the</strong>r militants nor<br />

<strong>in</strong>surgents. They are ma<strong>in</strong>ly members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligentsia, political<br />

and economic elites, as well as enlightened traditional <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

But most especially <strong>the</strong> enlightened middle class citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong><br />

<strong>Delta</strong>. There is <strong>the</strong>refore no militant or military w<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> true <strong>Niger</strong><br />

<strong>Delta</strong> Struggle. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Governor Uduaghan <strong>of</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> State;<br />

I have always emphasized dur<strong>in</strong>g our meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>in</strong> Abuja that whatever <strong>the</strong>y want to do…please do<br />

it on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> ethnic nationality because <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no one who speak on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ijaw man.<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r can ano<strong>the</strong>r ethnic group speak on behalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Isoko, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Efik, and Ibibio”. (The<br />

Nation, Sept 25, 2008).<br />

There is no doubt that all <strong>the</strong> ethnic nationalities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region are<br />

equal stakeholders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> imbroglio. Yet <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

militant group collectively put toge<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>the</strong>se nationalities as a<br />

bloc, and no militant group manifests a representative pr<strong>of</strong>ile, as<br />

virtually all <strong>the</strong> active militant groups are almost exclusively Ijaws,<br />

which with<strong>in</strong> this context can speak for no one, or fight for no one but<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. The genu<strong>in</strong>e and true struggle for economic and sociopolitical<br />

emancipation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> peoples <strong>the</strong>refore, is yet to<br />

assume a militant posture.<br />
