our current problematic. These are <strong>the</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

development and corporate social responsibility.<br />

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT<br />

The concept <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development is related to <strong>the</strong> need for<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutionalization <strong>of</strong> best bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices by companies,<br />

corporations and sundry bus<strong>in</strong>ess concerns as well as governments <strong>in</strong><br />

processes <strong>of</strong> production, distribution and consumption, vis-à-vis <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

economic, socio-political and environmental spheres <strong>of</strong> activity.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to World Development Report (2003;14), susta<strong>in</strong>ability is an<br />

evolv<strong>in</strong>g framework. It stated that societies will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to transform<br />

over time and s<strong>in</strong>ce significant social stress and crisis is likely to lead<br />

to a breakdown <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development and preservation <strong>of</strong> all assets,<br />

<strong>in</strong>ter-generational well-be<strong>in</strong>g is bound to be jeopardized (Ibid). Thus<br />

for any given technology and knowledge resource base, <strong>the</strong>re are some<br />

utilization rates that cannot be susta<strong>in</strong>ed (op.cit). It is <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

necessary for such unsusta<strong>in</strong>able rates to be highlighted as a guide to<br />

corporate decision makers who may thus be enabled to change <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

course towards susta<strong>in</strong>ability (op.cit).<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able development has <strong>the</strong>refore been described as that<br />

development that meets <strong>the</strong> needs and aspirations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<br />

generations, without compromis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ability to meet <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong><br />

future generations (Agagu, 2008:4). Susta<strong>in</strong>able development strategy<br />

may <strong>the</strong>refore be seen as facilitator for balanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong><br />

nature’s resources with <strong>the</strong> need for <strong>in</strong>dustrial and technological<br />
