Chapter VIII: The <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Crisis</strong>: <strong>Issues</strong> Challenges and Prospects<br />

Yoruba and Igbo. Among <strong>the</strong>se, <strong>the</strong> Ijaw seems by far <strong>the</strong> largest. In<br />

this region also lies <strong>Niger</strong>ia’s over 35 billion barrels <strong>of</strong> proven oil<br />

reserves,(Ibid) besides an even larger deposit <strong>of</strong> natural gas. The<br />

region also accounts for over 80% <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia’s Gross Domestic Product<br />

and represents <strong>the</strong> economic jugular <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

Here <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>tricate network <strong>of</strong> creeks and braided streams also lies<br />

<strong>the</strong> operational bases <strong>of</strong> a plethora <strong>of</strong> ethic militia and <strong>in</strong>surgent<br />

groups <strong>of</strong> various k<strong>in</strong>ds, with differ<strong>in</strong>g goals and objectives rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from nationalism and freedom fight<strong>in</strong>g to crim<strong>in</strong>ality and terrorism.<br />

This region is <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>Niger</strong>ia’s hot bed <strong>of</strong> ethnic violence, terrorism<br />

and <strong>in</strong>surgency. But <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> unchecked violence and a<br />

revolv<strong>in</strong>g crim<strong>in</strong>ality, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> resultant widespread anxiety<br />

to douse tension and appease <strong>the</strong> militants, <strong>the</strong> real issues seem to<br />

have been forgotten, and prescribed solutions rendered puerile.<br />

This paper sets out to revisit and highlight <strong>the</strong> real issues <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> struggle, and to analyse <strong>the</strong> true challenges that confront <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Niger</strong>ian State. And deriv<strong>in</strong>g from this, to po<strong>in</strong>t out some ways to an<br />

amicable solution which alone can form <strong>the</strong> foundation for a genu<strong>in</strong>e<br />

reconciliation, and susta<strong>in</strong>able development and peace through<br />

corporate social responsibility.<br />

Conceptual Clarification<br />

It is pert<strong>in</strong>ent at this stage, to attempt a clarification <strong>of</strong> two important<br />

concepts which are germane to <strong>the</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g and explication <strong>of</strong><br />
