Chapter I: Understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> Conflict: Matters Aris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This disturb<strong>in</strong>g trend has ga<strong>in</strong>ed momentum s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> genesis <strong>of</strong> this<br />

fourth democratic experiment, a development which shows that our<br />

political class has refused to free itself from <strong>the</strong> manacle <strong>of</strong> political<br />

<strong>in</strong>tolerance and immaturity which, among o<strong>the</strong>r factors, made it a<br />

ready captive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military oligarchy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past and, which will<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue to make it so, unless <strong>the</strong>re is urgent and permanent change<br />

<strong>of</strong> philosophy through committed moral rearmament. When evaluated<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wherewithal and rationale <strong>of</strong> acceptable<br />

contend<strong>in</strong>g issues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Crisis</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia. Chapter 2 is on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Political Economy <strong>of</strong> fossil fuel <strong>in</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia where Lere Amusan<br />

posits that <strong>Niger</strong>ia’s overreliance on fossil fuel as a ma<strong>in</strong> source <strong>of</strong><br />

foreign exchange cont<strong>in</strong>ues to expose <strong>the</strong> fragility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state<br />

economy to <strong>the</strong> unpredictable gloomy global <strong>in</strong>ternational economic<br />

relations. The need to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> skyrocket<strong>in</strong>g prices <strong>of</strong> fossil fuel at<br />
