years <strong>of</strong> fruitless wait<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian Government and<br />

mult<strong>in</strong>ational companies to come up with policies to address <strong>the</strong><br />

issues raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bill. The Saro-Wiwa’s Movement for <strong>the</strong> survival <strong>of</strong><br />

Ogoni people (MOSOP) was formed to re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> aims and<br />

objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ogoni Bill <strong>of</strong> Rights. The MOSOP rolled out its<br />

agenda <strong>in</strong> earnest on November, 1992. Some <strong>of</strong> its high po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude: (i) <strong>the</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a resolution that gave Shell Petroleum<br />

development company <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia a 30-day quit notice. (ii) that by <strong>the</strong><br />

first quarter <strong>of</strong> 1993, <strong>the</strong> “March” <strong>of</strong> January 4 and <strong>the</strong> “vigil” <strong>of</strong><br />

March 13 have been accomplished. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> “big March”, Saro-<br />

Wiwa declared thus, “<strong>the</strong> Ogoni people <strong>in</strong> Rivers States publicly<br />

reassessed <strong>the</strong> Bill <strong>of</strong> Rights which <strong>the</strong>y presented to President<br />

Babangida and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian nation.<br />

In fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> struggle, Saro-Wiwa’s MOSOP took <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

message beyond <strong>the</strong> shores <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ia to United States <strong>in</strong> New York.<br />

The movement was accorded <strong>the</strong> much-needed <strong>in</strong>ternational attention<br />

after present<strong>in</strong>g its case. Thereafter, MOSOP returned to <strong>Niger</strong>ia with<br />

endorsements from <strong>in</strong>ternational environmental groups such as Green<br />

peace and <strong>the</strong> London Ra<strong>in</strong>forest Action Group. Unfortunately <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Niger</strong>ian Government ignored all its pleas. Instead, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong>ian<br />

government <strong>of</strong>ficial resorted to <strong>the</strong> harassment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong><br />

MOSOP with its security agencies.<br />
