palm oil, agricultural production became <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly oriented<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> satisfaction <strong>of</strong> external <strong>in</strong>terests; new forms <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

activities emerged <strong>in</strong> response to European demands, for example,<br />

forestry;<br />

a new class <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous merchants emerged and<br />

Europeans began to build factories <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. Of course, <strong>the</strong> region<br />

also became a market for <strong>the</strong> products <strong>of</strong> European <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

radically alter<strong>in</strong>g consumption patterns. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> most pr<strong>of</strong>ound<br />

impact yet is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> political arena when, as a result <strong>of</strong> imposition <strong>of</strong><br />

colonial rule at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth century, <strong>the</strong> small but<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent pre-colonial social formations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> were<br />

constituted as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new nation, <strong>Niger</strong>ia which came <strong>in</strong>to<br />

existence <strong>in</strong> 1914 as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amalgamation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Protectorates by Lord Luggard. This s<strong>in</strong>gular act led to<br />

<strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various pre-colonial nations and<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced ethnicity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> relations among <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terethnic<br />

struggles for scarce socio-economic resources. (Nnoli, 1978).<br />

In 1939 when <strong>the</strong> country was reorganised <strong>in</strong>to three regions-North,<br />

East and West –dom<strong>in</strong>ated by Hausa-Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba<br />

respectively, <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eastern and western halves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Niger</strong><br />

<strong>Delta</strong> became m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups <strong>in</strong> Eastern and Western regions<br />

respectively. From <strong>the</strong>n till <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> colonial rule, <strong>the</strong> cry <strong>of</strong><br />

marg<strong>in</strong>alization was unabated. It reached a crescendo just before<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependence, necessitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Will<strong>in</strong>ks’s<br />

Commission to <strong>in</strong>quire <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> fears <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>orities. Although <strong>the</strong><br />
