new role, Burch will work<br />

nate efforts to integrate classroom<br />

learning with whole<br />

life experiences.<br />

re s o u rces for faculty who<br />

want a service component for<br />

their classes and helping to<br />

make service an integral part<br />

of the summer study abro a d<br />

trips. She also will continue<br />

to coordinate Urban Plunge, a<br />

s e rvice learning experience<br />

over fall mid-term and Easter<br />

b reaks that teaches students<br />

about poverty and homelessness<br />

while involving them in<br />

s e rvice to inner-city re s id e n t s .<br />

“It is very impactful for<br />

students to get a hands-on<br />

experience for what they’re<br />

l e a rning in class and have the<br />

opportunity to use their<br />

knowledge to serve others,”<br />

says Burch. “Our goal is that<br />

either through their work or<br />

their reflection, they learn<br />

something new about where<br />

they served and the issues<br />

i n v o l v e d .”<br />

B u rch also will dire c t<br />

N o r t h w e s t e rn s ’ new themed<br />

housing project. This fall,<br />

women students in three oncampus<br />

cottages are exploring<br />

what it means to live and<br />

l e a rn in community as they<br />

participate in study and discussion<br />

related to a specific<br />

theme. The cottages include<br />

a Spanish house, in which<br />

only Spanish language is spoken;<br />

a residence devoted to<br />

the issue of servant leadership;<br />

and a community of<br />

women looking at how<br />

Tamar in Genesis 38 did the<br />

right thing for her culture<br />

and her society.<br />
