Safeguarding Children
At Hornbill School, the health, safety and well-being of every child is
our paramount concern. We listen to our pupils and take seriously
what they tell us. Our aim is that children will enjoy their time as
pupils in this school.
We want to work in partnership with you to help your child to achieve
their full potential and make a positive contribution.
On rare occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to
consult other agencies even before we contact you. The procedures,
which we follow, have been laid down by the Service Children's
Education, and the school has adopted a Child Protection Policy in line
with this for the safety of all. If you want to know more about our
procedures or the policy, please speak to the Headteacher or your
child’s class teacher
A Warm Welcome to Year 5 at Hornbill School
Dear Parents
It’s exciting to be starting another academic year at Hornbill
School and we are sure it will just as fun-packed as last year!
This year our classes will be led by Mr Bennett (Y5 Shark) and
Mr Perriam (Y5 Whale). All children in Year 5 will also be
supported by our highly experienced and talented Nepali
Specialist Teacher Mr Pradhan. We are all looking forward to what
we know will be a highly successful and excited year.
Our first theme this year is The Wicked, Wild West which is a
study of life in America a long time ago, focusing on the indigenous
tribes of America and western settlers… more commonly known as
Cowboys and Indians! The theme will involve historical study and
research as we hone our skills to see what we can find out.
In Term 2 we will look at scientific inventions and gadgets which
help make our lives a little easier. Our theme is entitled Cracking
Ideas. We will base our theme around Wallace and Gromit - two of
the worlds leading scientists!
In Term 3 we will be looking at natural disasters and the power of
the Earth in our theme, Natural Phenomenon. This is a geography
based theme and the children will learn to look at the world in a
different light!
Our Aim is for every child to achieve success in everything
they set out to do. This is promoted throughout our school
by these 8 ‘can do’ aims.
I can learn to play a
musical instrument.
I can learn a modern foreign
language.
I can learn to swim.
I can have a voice and
be heard.
I can learn in a stimulating
and exciting environment.
I can look after the world for
future generations.
I can use ICT imaginatively
to extend my world and
share knowledge & experiences
with others
I can assess my own
work, set my own
target and take my
next steps
Homework
Homework provides an important link between home and school, as
well as an opportunity for you to find out about your child’s learning
through support and discussion.
Homework will be provided in a range of different ways that will
include tasks on paper, challenges or activities set on the Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE) or on www.educationcity.com Homework
will be set each week on Thursday and collected on the following
Wednesday and will consist of mainly maths and English
activities. Maths homework will be set to support the class
teaching. Times tables will also be regularly tested. In addition to
this, English homework will also be set each week which will consist of
reading, spelling and a task linked to the theme.
Scientific & Technical Understanding
We will learn about the properties and patterns of the Earth,
moon and sun as natural cycles which influence our lives e.g. the
tidal patterns caused by the gravity of the sun and moon. We will
also study how sound is created and changed.
Understanding the Arts
In drama the children will use hot-seating and role play to re-enact
scenarios from fictional and actual natural disasters. In art they will use a
range of materials to create collages of an erupting volcano and to depict
other natural phenomena. In music they will continue to develop their skills
in playing the ocarina as well as composing their own musical score entitled
‘Earth Anthem’, using computer software.
Physical Development
All children this term will continue to take part in two PE sessions per
week (swimming on Tuesday up until February half-term and PE on
Wednesday). Please can you ensure that your child has the correct
Hornbill PE kit and appropriate footwear on these two days. Please
ensure they have the correct school uniform to change in to as we are
teaching the children to be conscious about personal hygiene.
Snacks and Hats
As always, we would like to remind you that it is important for your son
or daughter to bring a drink to school daily, with their healthy snack.
Please avoid fizzy drinks. Please also remember that your child should
have a named Hornbill orange school cap for when we are outside.
Reading Books
Children in Year 5 are expected to have their reading book and reading
record book in school every day and also to take it home with them
every day. The reading record book serves as a great way for teachers
to communicate with parents and vice versa. It is expected that children
are reading every day and recording it in their reading records.
gymnastic sequences. In games they will learn the skills and rules involved in touch rugby. They
will also learn some basic first aid and survival skills through our theme.
Term 3 - 2012 / 2013
Page 15 Parents Handbook 2012 - 2013
Historical, Geographical and
Social Understanding
We will learn about natural phenomena
throughout history. The children will
study when and where in the world
different phenomena and natural
disasters occurred and use this
information to construct a timeline.
We will also investigate the social
impact of events.
Natural Phenomena
Our theme will focus on natural phenomena and disasters and how they have
impacted on mankind. We will study the geography, history and social impact
of events such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, storms, floods and
plague. We will focus on how people have responded positively to such
events by showing ingenuity, initiative and compassion.
Understanding English Communication & Language
This term we will be focusing on the literacy genres of persuasion, recount and
explanation. The children will be reading and writing recounts of past events, such
as natural disasters, a volcanic eruption for example. They will use role play as a
stimulus to imagine that they are eyewitnesses recounting events as they saw them
unfold. The children will use their speaking and listening, persuasive and explanatory
skills to try to raise awareness of environmental issues such as global warming, and
raise funds for emergency relief.
Mathematical Understanding
The children will continue to focus on developing their mathematical
calculation and question interpretation skills. They will practise reading
written questions carefully, breaking them down into stages and selecting
the most efficient calculation method to solve the problem.
Reading practice is imperative to children’s progress and
reading records will be monitored on a Friday to ensure
that they are being kept up-to-date. Any reading they do
independently or with their parent needs to be recorded in
the reading record book. Children in Year 5 are also
expected to independently change their reading book as
they need to.
The children in Year 5 Shark and Whale Classes will also have weekly
sessions in the library on Fridays. Children will need to have their
library books in school for changing during their class session. Pupils
can also change their library books at any time during the week.
Parent Planning Sessions
We are very keen to involve parents as much as possible in our school.
During this term there will be opportunities to join your child in their
class and to look through their work. We encourage you to attend any
forthcoming curriculum days as this gives you the chance to offer
suggestions of activities or ideas that would help your child to learn.
If you have any concerns about any aspects of your child’s time at
Hornbill School, then please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Appointments can easily be made through the school office on
extension 3214 if you would like to discuss your child with their class
teacher.
Cracking Ideas
Our second theme is based on the numerous films featuring Wallace and Gromit.
There will be lots of scope for invention and design which include an emphasis on
creative imagination. In this theme, children use Design and Technology as a starting
point for their inventions. They will also look at the historical impact of certain
inventions on our day to day lifestyle.
Understanding English Communication & Language
This term’s English will focus initially on film narrative and creating and
writing storyboards and dialogue. The children will study a novel by a
renowned author and use this for the basis of their own writing. The
children will then move on to non-fiction texts and will look at how to write
instructions on how to use their inventions and learn ways of persuading
people to buy them!
Mathematical Understanding
In this term we will be focusing on using our mathematical knowledge to
help us solve problems. This is a whole school focus and we are aiming for
children to become more confident in multi-step step problems using a
variety of calculation strategies. In addition to this, children will also
study shape and symmetry, place value, measures and learn how
information can be collected and presented in lots of different ways.
Theme Outcomes
• Weird and wonderful inventions
for all sorts of things!
• A range of 3D structures to
enhance our understanding of
how things work.
• A piece of music created on the
computer.
• A personal project handed in
towards the end of term.
Modern Foreign Language
Children will develop their
conversational language and will begin
to use their knowledge to engage in
conversations. Their range of
vocabulary will be extended to cover
every day objects.
Term 1
Our landing pad will focus on the
later history of the Wild West
and have a cowboy theme.
Activities for this will include:
•Lassoing skills
•A shoot-out (with water pistols!)
•Barn / line dancing
•Making dream catchers
Term 2
We are intending to set up some command
task style problems for children and
parents to solve. They will have to work
closely in teams, using their initiative and
thinking skills to solve problems involving
moving themselves
Term 3
We plan to visit the Oil and gas Discovery
Centre (OGDC) for our Landing Pad. There
we will learn about Earth Science and
participate in a ‘quiz trail’ around the
exhibits. We will also build our own
individual erupting volcanoes!
Page 12 Learning Phase 3 - Year 5
Understanding English Communication & Language
This term we will be studying myths, legends and traditional stories. We will also
look at stories from other cultures. We will study the effect of authorial language
choices on the reader eg ‘Why did the writer use the word ‘uncontrollably’ to
describe how the princess sobbed What does it tell us about how she felt’ In
reading and comprehending texts we will focus on inference and deduction. The
children will also use their reading to inform their own story writing, learning and
using story telling techniques.
Mathematical Understanding
The main focus of this term will be mathematical problem solving – reading and
comprehending one or two stage written problems and then choosing appropriate
calculation strategies to solve them. These problems might involve number, data
handling, measures or shape and space. We will also focus on developing speed and
accuracy in mental maths, by practising and improving mental calculation strategies
used in tackling verbal problems.
have had the opportunity to improve
their artistic techniques.
• A greater understanding of how
communities interact through
extended drama activities.
Wicked Wild West
Our theme this term focuses on studying the history and geography of
early North America. We will examine how the native North American
people lived and their beliefs, customs and arts. We will study the impact
of the arrival of European culture and technology and how they moved
westward to colonise the country.
Page 10 Learning Phase 3 - Year 5
naming and describing family
members. They will extend their
language knowledge into themes such
as the weather and shopping.
.
Scientific & Technical Understanding
We will be studying lifecycles, life processes and reproduction in
plants – the structure and function of flowers and how seeds are
dispersed. We will also learn about Healthy Living and how
exercise and eating a balanced diet can make us happier and
healthier.
Understanding the Arts
We will look at pattern and print in Native North American Indian art and design and
make our own moccasins. The children will also explore North American Indian
customs and beliefs through the arts e.g. ritualistic dancing (rain and war dance), face
painting and totems. In music we will use drum rhythms to accompany our dancing. We
will use drama and poetry to explore the conflict of values and beliefs between
Indians and European settlers.
Our values this term
will be:
Citizenship
Cooperation
Courtesy
Consideration
Understanding Physical Development, Health & Wellbeing
The focus for physical development this term will be athletics and invasion games
such as netball and basketball.
