Originally developed by Rite Systems,
a liquid technology pioneer that
Clariant recently acquired, liquid color
masterbatches complement Clariant’s
comprehensive family of solid colorants
and additives, specified worldwide
in virtually every industry to optimize
the appearance and functionality of
plastic products. The expansion of
our liquid masterbatches portfolio
demonstrates Clariant’s commitment

universe of high-performance

Clariant also continues to innovate in
the field of solid masterbatches with
the introduction of “nano” granules to
facilitate homogeneous color and
additive distribution at progressively

Why Liquid Color
Offering exceptional latitude in
formulation, liquid color has a proven
history of consistent, accurate results.
Major benefits of the technology
include very low addition rates, in
some cases as low as 0.001%, together
with excellent color dispersion and
long-run color consistency. Thermal
stability is also significantly improved
because, unlike solid masterbatches
and compounds, the material does not
require heating during manufacture.
Liquid color masterbatches facilitate
rapid color changes, and require less
room to store than granulated solid
masterbatches. In addition, they offer
a number of processing advantages,
including lower running temperatures,
enhanced mold release and reduced
cycle times.
Clariant liquid color masterbatches can
be used with almost all thermoplastic
resins and processes, including
extrusion, injection molding and blow
molding. They are also compatible with
all commonly used additives. When
properly formulated utilizing a total
systems approach, liquid color
addresses not only the desired shade,
but the chemistry of the base resin,
special process requirements and the
targeted performance level of the
finished part.

Delivery systems for granulated solid
masterbatches are well developed

system to handle low addition rate with
high accuracy needs to be evaluated,
and the capital investment involved
may favor a liquid color option.
State-of-the-art metering and dispensing
systems have been developed
specifically for handling liquid color in
virtually every application and process.
Designed for control and accountability,
this highly specialized equipment
monitors color levels and provides
data on daily usage. Motor response is
instantaneous and accuracy is greatly
improved over traditional systems.
The wireless system can be controlled
with a handheld device or a central
computer. Integration into machine
control systems is also an important

Dispelling Common Myths About Liquid Color
Perception:
Higher let-down ratios cause problems.
Reality:
Although Clariant liquid color masterbatches typically run at low
dosage with accuracy in the range of ±0.0001%, addition rates of up to
3-4% are possible in polyolefins without screw slippage.
Perception:
Combining liquid color with additives is a problem.
Reality:
Most additives can be easily blended, dispersed or dissolved in
liquid color. Some liquid additives can even be used as part of the
vehicle system.
Perception:
Liquid color is messy to use.
Reality:
Properly handled, liquid color is very clean. It is delivered in sealed
packages, and the peristaltic pump is never in contact with the product.
In the machine, liquid color helps to clean the screw, considerably
reducing color change time and scrap rate.
Perception:
Dosing equipment is expensive.
Reality:
The equipment cost is actually very low in comparison to high accuracy
dosing systems for low addition rate solid masterbatch. This could
reduce the overall capital investment needed. What’s more, one pump
can be moved from machine to machine and need not be dedicated to
a single color. Clariant provides hands-on support to maximize your
use of the system.
Perception:
Liquid color has limited shelf life so you’re likely to waste inventory
past the “use by” date.
Reality:
Overdue material is never a problem for Clariant customers. We offer
a variety of packaging sizes and short delivery times, and also guarantee
six months’ shelf life. Simple agitation of the package before use
extends the shelf life.
Perception:
Liquid color is only for PET.
Reality:
Clariant liquid colorants have been developed with a range of specific
carriers that can be used with most commercial thermoplastics and
processes.
