Welcome
The Advanced Management Program (AMP) East Africa,
led jointly by Strathmore Business School (SBS) and IESE
Business School, Barcelona Spain, helps business leaders
develop the professional and personal capabilities required
to successfully meet their professional endeavours.
The AMP East Africa offers an invaluable opportunity to
learn from high-calibre faculty members, interact with
a group of senior-level peers and strengthen leadership
skills. The program will also broaden your vision of
business, and introduce you to the challenges and
opportunities of today’s global business environment
while emphasising the human and ethical roots of
management.
Faculty members from two top institutions - SBS and IESE
- lead the program. Through the integrated expertise of
these two schools, participants gain a comprehensive
view of business, with the distinct needs of business
leaders in Africa kept sharply in focus. We invite you
to find out about the benefits of the AMP East Africa,
and contact us if you would like to take part in this
transformational program.
SBS-IESE:
A Powerful Alliance
Leaders in Business Education
United in their humanistic view of management, SBS
and IESE are pioneers in business education. SBS, the
business school of Strathmore University, is unparalleled
in its geographic region. Strathmore is the highest ranked
university in Kenya, according to the July 2009 “The
Webometrics Ranking of World Universities,” and the
highest ranked university outside Egypt and South Africa.
IESE was established in 1957 in Barcelona, Spain, to
provide executive education programs for managers at
a time when executive education was scarcely known
outside the United States. In 1964, the school launched
Europe’s first two-year MBA program, under the
guidance of the Harvard-Advisory Committee.
In 1993, the school began launching international
executive education programs in partnership with top
U.S. schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT Sloan and
the University of Michigan. IESE further enhanced its
presence in the United States when it opened its New
York City offices in 2007.
International Character
SBS and IESE programs combine a global mindset with
an understanding of the different cultural, institutional
and social dimensions that play a role in business in
different regions around the world. The SBS world-class
campus in Nairobi – where the Nairobi module is held
- provides an ideal setting for carrying out the schools’
goal of preparing business leaders of excellence. The
program concludes on IESE’s Barcelona campus with a
Pan-African module that incorporates senior executives
attending a similar program at Lagos Business School.
A Culture of Learning
In the AMP, participants are encouraged to ask not
only what, but how and why. An emphasis on the case
method gives participants the chance to analyze real
business problems, while sharpening their decisionmaking
skills.
A Focus on People
The program takes a personalized approach to
management education, placing people at the heart
of companies and their challenges. Moreover, a special
emphasis is placed on the human and ethical values
indispensable for personal growth and corporate
sustainability.
Strong Research Base
Research carried out by the faculty provides the
foundation for the program. Faculty members are
dedicated to investigating diverse areas such as
globalization and strategy, family-owned business and
entrepreneurship.
Business Relevance
SBS and IESE are committed to helping business leaders
and their organizations find effective solutions for
today’s challenges. For this reason, the program takes
a highly practical focus, attending to the immediate
interests of the business community.
Building Business Leadership
in Africa
A strong private sector is critical for fuelling economic
growth and development, while also contributing
toward government accountability and political stability.
The Association of African Business Schools (AABS)
has identified a critical need for greater management
expertise at all levels on the continent. SBS and IESE
seek to fill this critical gap by offering the AMP, which
provides the necessary knowledge and skills to help
business leaders excel.
Graduates of the AMP receive certificates that feature
both the Strathmore and IESE crests.
Program Objectives
& Benefits
A Forum for Discussion
The Advanced Management Program East Africa gives
managers the opportunity to examine their own leadership
effectiveness, as well as ethical values and standards.
When you take part in the AMP East Africa, you will be
put into a small study group comprising participants of
diverse professional backgrounds and experiences. The
close bonds forged with your classmates, representing a
wide range of sectors, can lead to new business alliances
that will last long after the program is over.
Wider Management Perspective
The use of business case studies is central to the AMP
learning experience. Participants will analyze and make
decisions about real-life business challenges. Each
case draws out several “best practices,” which can be
immediately applied to your own situation, assuring
direct relevance to you.
In the end, you will find yourself equipped with a
whole new set of tools for making wiser analyses and
taking decisive action, from a much wider management
vantage point.
Identify New Opportunities
You will learn to align your business practices with the
latest trends and economic conditions, and develop
new strategies that will create value in the long-term.
You will learn how to tackle business challenges with
a sharper eye and how to harness the opportunities
generated by changes in the environment.
Become an Effective Leader
The program offers the unique chance to better
understand your own unique leadership style. In this
way, you will learn to manage yourself and inspire
others through strategic change.
SBS and IESE’s educational philosophy stresses ethical
entrepreneurship, personal integrity and social
responsibility, which we believe have a profound,
constructive impact on those around you and society
as a whole.
How to Apply
All applications for admission will be thoroughly reviewed
by the program’s Admissions Committee, which will be
the sole judge of a candidate’s qualifications to enter the
program. Due to class size restraints and the need to have
a balanced mixture of backgrounds, sometimes not all
fully qualified applicants can be admitted to the program.
Applications for admission are accepted throughout the
year and should be received at least two months prior to
the program’s start date. Due to limited class size, early
application is encouraged. Late applications will only be
considered if space is still available in the program.
