HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT 12.12.2012 VOL. 04 ISSUE 065
Friday’s
Jackpot
$30 MILLION
HOUSTON, ‘GANGNAM STYLE’
TOP WEB SEARCHES OF 2012
LOS ANGELES – The
world’s attention wavered
between the tragic and silly
in 2012, and Web surfers
searched in huge numbers
to find out about a royal
princess, the latest iPad and
a record-breaking skydiver.
Singer Whitney Houston
was the “top trending”
search of the year, according
to Google Inc.’s year-end
“zeitgeist” report. Google’s
12th annual roundup is “an
in-depth look at the spirit of
the times as seen through
the billions of searches on
Google over the past year,”
the company said in a blog
post today.
Google defines topics as
“trending” when they get a
high amount of traffic over
a sustained period of time.
People around the globe
searched for news about
Houston’s accidental
drowning in a bathtub just
before she was to perform
at a pre-Grammy Awards
party in February.
Korean rapper PSY’s
Gangnam Style video trotted
into second spot, a testament
to his self-deprecating
dance move.
Superstorm Sandy, which
knocked out power and
flooded parts of the U.S. presidential
campaign, was third.
The next biggest trending
searches globally were
a pair of threes: the iPad 3
tablet from Apple Inc. and
Diablo 3, a popular video
game.
Rounding out the Top 10
were Kate Middleton, who
made news with scandalous
photos and a royal pregnancy;
the 2012 Olympics
in London; Amanda Todd,
a Canadian teen who was
found dead of an apparent
suicide in October after being
bullied online; Michael
Clarke Duncan, the Green
Mile actor who died of a
heart attack in September
at age 54; and BBB12, the
12th edition of Big Brother
Brasil.
HOAX CALL NURSE’S AUTOPSY
RESULTS RELEASED TOMORROW
LONDON – London police
say the result of an autopsy
on the nurse involved in a
prank call for information
about the Kate the Duchess
of Cambridge’s hospital stay
will be revealed tomorrow.
Scotland Yard said today
the cause of Jacintha Saldanha’s
death will not be released
until a Westminster
Coroner’s Court hearing.
Saldanha took the call
when two Australian disc
jockeys rang up the hospital
where the Duchess of Cambridge
was being treated for
severe morning sickness.
The DJs, who were impersonating
Fire up those computers
it’s Free Shipping Day.
As American shopping
incentives like Black Friday
and Cyber Monday see increased
success in Canada,
today’s retail event is yet
another attempt to entice
Canucks to spend.
The one-day online campaign
– which has been running
south of the border for
five years – is being offered
for the second year in Canada
and has nearly 250 merchants
offering free shipping
with delivery guaranteed by
Christmas Eve.
The lure of free shipping
could prove to be a strong
one today as high or hidden
delivery costs can often be a
deterring factor for Canadians
shopping online.
“It’s actually more about
the delivery promise than
it is about the free shipping.
But it is the free shipping
that grabs people,” said Regina
native Luke Knowles,
who created the campaign.
“Shoppers can save lots of
II and Prince Charles, later
broadcast the call.
Saldanha was found dead
Friday. Although police have
made no connection between
her death and the call,
people have been making
the assumption she died because
of stress from the call.
money.”
Knowles said the idea
for the event first launched
in the U.S. in 2008 grew
from the idea that many
customers stopped online
shopping after the
first two weeks of December
for fear their items
wouldn’t arrive in time to
be given as gifts.
“We decide to change the
shoppers’ behaviour on that
so we combined free shipping
with delivery by Christmas
Eve,” he said.
A
Christmas
CAROL
An abridged version by Charles Dickens
THE NEWS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
12.12.2012 P. 04
. . . continued from yesterday
So Martha hid herself, and in came little Bob, the father, with at least three feet of
comforter, exclusive of the fringe, hanging down before him; and his threadbare clothes
darned up and brushed, to look seasonable; and Tiny Tim upon his shoulder. Alas for
Tiny Tim, he bore a little crutch, and had his limbs supported by an iron frame!
“Why, where’s our Martha” cried Bob Cratchit, looking round.
“Not coming,” said Mrs. Cratchit.
“Not coming!” said Bob, with a sudden declension in his high spirits; for he had been
Tim’s blood-horse all the way from church, and had come home rampant, -- “not coming
upon Christmas day!”
Martha didn’t like to see him disappointed, if it were only in joke; so she came out
prematurely from behind the closet door, and ran into his arms, while the two young
Cratchits hustled Tiny Tim, and bore him off to the wash-house that he might hear the
pudding singing in the copper.
“And how did little Tim behave” asked Mrs. Cratchit, when she had rallied Bob on his
credulity, and Bob had hugged his daughter to his heart’s content.
“As good as gold,” said Bob, “and better. Somehow he gets thoughtful, sitting by
himself so much, and thinks the strangest things you ever heard. He told me, coming
home, that he hoped the people saw him in the church, because he was a cripple, and it
might be pleasant to them to remember, upon Christmas day, who made lame beggars
walk and blind men see.”
Bob’s voice was tremulous when he told them this, and trembled more when he said
that Tiny Tim was growing strong and hearty. His active little crutch was heard upon the
floor, and back came Tiny Tim before another word was spoken, escorted by his brother
and sister to his stool beside the fire; and while Bob, turning up his cuffs, -- as if, poor
fellow, they were capable of being made more shabby, -- compounded some hot mixture
in a jug with gin and lemons, and stirred it round and round and put it on the hob to
simmer, Master Peter and the two ubiquitous young Cratchits went to fetch the goose,
with which they soon returned in high procession.
Mrs. Cratchit made the gravy (ready beforehand in a little saucepan) hissing hot;
Master Peter mashed the potatoes with incredible vigor; Miss Belinda sweetened up the
applesauce; Martha dusted the hot plates; Bob took Tiny Tim beside him in a tiny corner
at the table; the two young Cratchits set chairs for everybody, not forgetting themselves,
and mounting guard upon their posts, crammed spoons into their mouths, lest they
should shriek for goose before their turn came to be helped. At last the dishes were set
on, and grace was said. It was succeeded by a breathless pause, as Mrs. Cratchit, looking
slowly all along the carving knife, prepared to plunge it in the breast; but when she did,
and when the long-expected gush of stuffing issued forth, one murmur of delight arose
all round the board, and even Tiny Tim, excited by the two young Cratchits, beat on the
table with the handle of his knife, and feebly cried, Hurrah!
There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn’t believe there ever was such a goose
cooked. Its tenderness and flavor, size and cheapness, were the themes of universal
admiration. Eked out by applesauce and mashed potatoes, it was a sufficient dinner
for the whole family; indeed, as Mrs. Cratchit said with great delight (surveying one
small atom of a bone upon the dish), they hadn’t ate it all at last! Yet every one had had
enough, and the youngest Cratchits in particular were steeped in sage and onion to the
eyebrows! But now, the plates being changed by Miss Belinda, Mrs. Cratchit left the
room alone, -- too nervous to bear witnesses, -- to take the pudding up, and bring it in.
Suppose it should not be done enough! Suppose it should break in turning out!
Suppose somebody should have got over the wall of the back yard, and stolen it, while
they were merry with the goose, -- a supposition at which the two young Cratchits
became livid! All sorts of horrors were supposed.
Hallo! A great deal of steam! The pudding was out of the copper. A smell like a
washing-day! That was the cloth. A smell like an eating-house and a pastry-cook’s next
door to each other with a laundress’s next door to that! That was the pudding! In half
a minute Mrs. Cratchit entered, -- flushed but smiling proudly, -- with the pudding, like
a speckled cannonball, so hard and firm, blazing in half of half a quartern of ignited
brandy, and bedight with Christmas holly stuck into the top.
O, a wonderful pudding I Bob Cratchit said, and calmly too, that he regarded it as the
greatest success achieved by Mrs. Cratchit since their marriage. Mrs.Cratchit said that
now the weight was off her mind, she would confess she had had her doubts about the
quantity of flour. Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody said or thought
it was at all a small pudding for a large family. Any Cratchit would have blushed to hint
at such a thing.
N. KOREANS CELEBRATE
1ST SATELLITE IN SPACE
PYONGYANG, North Korea — North
Koreans clinked beer mugs and
danced in the streets of Pyongyang
to celebrate the country’s first
satellite in space. In Washington,
Seoul and Tokyo, leaders pushed for
consequences for today’s successful
rocket launch, widely seen as a test
that takes the country one step
closer to being capable of lobbing
nuclear bombs over the Pacific.
The surprising, successful launch
of a three-stage rocket similar
in design to a model capable of
carrying a nuclear-tipped warhead
as far as California raises the stakes
in the international standoff over
North Korea’s expanding atomic
arsenal. As Pyongyang refines its
technology, its next step may be
conducting its third nuclear test,
They are hoping the lure of a
by a third since 2004 as cities from
which has punished North Korea
repeatedly for developing its nuclear
Canada, the United States, South
the launch.
Canada’s foreign affairs minister
said in a statement that the North’s
actions “clearly demonstrate its
wilful defiance of its international
John Baird added that the regime
in Pyongyang is a grave threat to the
security and stability of the region
The White House called the
threatens regional security,” and
even the North’s most important
Mickael Pietrus was not the
final answer for the Toronto
Raptors.
Hopefully he will help solve
their weakness at small
forward, a problem that seems
to have plagued the team
since Bryan Colangelo took
over the decision-making
duties in Toronto.
The list of small forwards
that have come and gone in
Toronto during Colangelo’s
tenure is long, with the
current group being Linas
Kleiza, Alan Anderson, Landry
Fields and Terrence Ross, as
well as Pietrus.
Kleiza is a candidate to be
amnestied next summer,
while the book is still out on
the latter players.
The current squad has
struggled out of the gate, and
injuries have prevented us
from seeing just how far this
roster has evolved from last
season.
Clearly, Colangelo may
have also misjudged the talent
level on the roster.
The Raptors are now in
MEDIATION GETS ANOTHER SHOT
ALEX SEIXEIRO
ALEX SEIXEIRO IS THE
AFTERNOON SPORTSCASTER ON
A two-day session with
mediation a few weeks back
didn’t do a single bit of good
in solving the lockout and
getting hockey back on the
ice. So in the latest round of
labour talks this week, why
would the NHL agree to the
NHLPA’s request to bring
mediation back to the
bargaining table
After talks blew up last
approaching for the franchise
to make a decision on the
future of their president and
general manager.
Something needs to happen
soon to shake up the
organization, be it a trade or
a firing, but the question for
the higher-ups is: Do you let
Colangelo make that move
Knowing that his job is
likely in the line, he is dealing
from an obvious position of
weakness.
More importantly, if he
were to make the wrong
decision, it could set the
franchise and his eventual
successor back several years.
@Kevin_H_Nielsen
week in New York,
commissioner Gary Bettman
was quoted as saying,
“We’re not interested in
mediation. We tried it a week
and a half ago. It was no
value because of the position
of the parties.”
So why could mediation
work now Because of what
happened during those three
days in New York.
FARWELL’S 411
MIKE FARWELL IS THE MORNING SPORTSCASTER ON
HUNGRY FOR HOCKEY
Think we miss hockey It was standing room only at Calgary’s
Markin MacPhail Centre last night to watch a Team Canada
scrimmage. The intra-squad game featured the 30-plus players
hopeful of earning a spot on our national junior entry this
Christmas. Two slightly more meaningful games loom against CIS
teams, with the final roster of 23 players to be named tomorrow.
GEDDY GETS BASEBALL
As a huge fan of Canadian rockers Rush, I’m thrilled with their long
overdue admittance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What does
that have to do with sports Well, lead singer Geddy Lee has a
huge, museum-quality baseball memorabilia collection. Lee’s
treasures include baseballs signed by Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy
Mathewson, Honus Wagner and Cy Young. After a visit to the
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Lee donated 400
baseballs to them. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s selection
committee hit a home run with this induction. @farwell590
Despite all the doom and
gloom that emanated during
the talks in New York, both
sides did make progress and
are closer to a deal. Because
of that, both parties are in
different positions.
With another $100 million
on the table from the owners
(I believe they’ll put that
back on the table) and both
sides agreeing on a 50-50
split of hockey-related
revenue, there is a deal to be
done.
There is no reason why
mediation can’t get both sides
to agree on issues like the
length of the CBA and player
contract limits. Those are not
issues that cause a full season
to be cancelled. They just
aren’t.
JUSTIN BIEBER
GOOGLED LESS IN 2012
Who would think of arguing that
Justin Bieber had an off year in
2012 Well, according to Google’s
annual exploration of web search
data, the Canadian pop star was
taken down a peg this past year.
“Justin Bieber’s kind of taking
some licks, at least in terms of
how he ranks in Google searches
this year,” says Google Canada
spokesman Aaron Brindle.
He wasn’t eligible for the year’s
Top 10 list of Canadian “trending”
searches – representing newer
queries that have broken out for
the first time – but surprisingly,
he wasn’t named Google’s biggest
music-related search of the year.
English-Irish boy band One
Direction had more searches than
Bieber, who did finish second in the
category.
“He still has tons and tons of
searches, but it’s interesting, this
is kind of a hard year for Justin
Bieber because he was outpaced
by One Direction and then we also
saw ... Gangnam Style passed Justin
Bieber’s (Baby) as the most watched
video of all time last month.”
Gangnam Style was No. 5 on
Google Canada’s list of top trending
searches of 2012, behind the social
media site Pinterest, hurricane
Sandy, the Olympics and the video
game Diablo 3. Gangnam Style
outranked the book-turned-film
Hunger Games, SOPA (an acronym
for the Stop Online Piracy Act), the
Quebec reality show Star Academie,
head of the Lord’s Resistance Army
Joseph Kony, and Zerg Rush, a
search term that launches a secret
video game at Google.com.
Bieber was also shut out at Yahoo!
Canada, which said its top searches
of the year were Kate Middleton,
iPhone 5, Kristen Stewart and
Robert Pattinson, Fifty Shades
of Grey, Higgs boson, hurricane
Sandy, Jessica Simpson, Jessica
Pare, Scientology and Miss Universe
Canada Jenna Talackova.
But Bieber did top the Bing.ca
charts, followed by Miley Cyrus, Kim
Kardashian, Selena Gomez, Kate
Middleton, Jennifer Aniston, Taylor
Swift, Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry
and Lady Gaga.
A new category Google Canada
tracked this year was “how to”
searches and Canadians most
wanted to learn “how to rock.”
Second was how to shuffle, followed
by kiss, YouTube, twerk, wakeboard,
snorkel, live and embroider.
Google also ranked searches
that started with “what is.” The top
result was “what is love,” followed
by SOPA, gluten, yolo (which stands
for you only live once), Instagram,
Scientology, Tumblr, Pinterest,
dubstep and autism.
‘GODFATHER OF WORLD MUSIC’
RAVI SHANKAR DEAD AT 92
NEW DELHI — With an instrument
perplexing to most westerners, Ravi
Shankar helped connect the world
through music. The sitar virtuoso
hobnobbed with the Beatles,
became a hippie musical icon and
spearheaded the first rock benefit
concert as he introduced traditional
Indian ragas to Western audiences
over nearly a century.
From George Harrison to John
Coltrane, from Yehudi Menuhin
to David Crosby, his connections
reflected music’s universality,
though a gap persisted between him
and many western fans. Sometimes
they mistook tuning for tunes, while
he stood aghast at displays like Jimi
Hendrix’s burning guitar.
Shankar died yesterday at age 92.
A statement on his website said he
died in San Diego, near his Southern
California home with his wife and a
daughter by his side. The musician’s
foundation
issued a
statement
saying that he
had suffered
respiratory
and heart
problems
and had
undergone heart-valve replacement
surgery last week.
Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh also confirmed
Shankar’s death and called him a
“national treasure.”
Labelled “the godfather of world
music” by Harrison, Shankar helped
millions of classical, jazz and rock
lovers discover the centuries-old
traditions of Indian music.
He also pioneered the concept
of the rock benefit with the 1971
generations, he was known
EAT OF THE WEEK
SABAI SABAI
WORDS: LIORA IPSUM PHOTOS: MORRIS LUM
Sabai Sabai is the new Thai kitchen
and bar helmed by chef Nuit Regular
of the popular Khao San Road. The
new 65-seat eatery sits just south of
Dundas on Church, in the space formerly
occupied by Wimpy’s Diner,
and more recently, the Tropical Palms.
Co-owners Regular, Jason Jiang and
Seng Luong are ready to offer fast, filling
lunches, and an evening menu of
small, modestly priced sharing plates,
alongside a full bar menu that includes
Beerlao, the national beer of
Laos, as well as Ontario wines and
Thai-inspired cocktails.
The eclectic interior aspires to recreate
the feeling of being in Thailand,
with brightly coloured collages of
vintage graphics and oversized posters
mounted on neutral-toned walls.
Comfortable booths offer relaxed
seating for small groups, and a private
dining area in the back provides room
for large parties up to 16.
Chef Regular notes that at Khao
San Road patrons typically order the
same dish again and again, but here
she hopes to find an outlet to experiment
and introduce Torontonians to
Thai cuisine that goes beyond traditional
pad Thai and curry options.
Though the lunch menu has hearty
à la carte options, the dinner menu
features a snack bar to encourage
sharing, tasting and drinking. Sharing
plates like the Grilled Northern Thai
Pork Skewer ($5) offer four generous
skewers of salty grilled meat so
flavourful that they hardly require
the accompanying dipping sauce.
The Grilled Pork Salad ($5) sees
crispy bite-sized pieces of pork lightly
dressed and served with a simple
Asian slaw.
The Steamed Curry Fish in Banana
Leaf ($5) arrives alongside the Crispy
CUISINE:
Thai
NEIGHBOURHOOD:
Ryerson University
THE BUZZ:
Authentic Thai food
Fried Fish with Tangy Tamarind Sauce
($6). Though the curry flavours in the
steamed fish offer some nice spice, I
don’t especially love the fish-cake texture.
The fried fish on the other hand
is perfect and has a golden crisp that
leaves me considering a second order.
The Morning Glory ($6) is an offthe-menu
Asian green sometimes
known as Chinese spinach. Here it
is lightly sauced with chili, tamarind
and fish sauce before being cooked in
a wok and served steaming hot.
For Sabai Sabai’s three co-owners –
who all hail from Thailand or Laos –
the menu offers many authentic comforts
from home. It is all deliciously
new, and a welcome alternative to the
standard Thai fare available throughout
the city.
ANGER STILL SIMMERING IN GREECE
A Greek municipal employee shouts anti-government slogans as riot police look on
after a group of protesters pushed into the grounds of Parliament in Athens today.
Riot police prevented the protesters from advancing much further, and there were
no clashes or arrests. Municipal employees are angry at government plans to include
them on a list of state employees up for forced redundancy under the country’s
austerity program.
Bill Gates ups CN Rail stake to 12%
By SCOTT DEVEAU
sdeveau@nationalpost.com
Bill Gates has increased
his overall investment in
Canadian National Railway
Co. to 12% for a combined
value of roughly $4.7 billion.
Cascade Investment LLC,
an investment company
owned and controlled by
the billionaire Microsoft
founder, said yesterday it
had acquired an additional
13,670 common shares in
CN for $1.25 million. The
additional shares brings
Cascade’s overall stake the
country’s largest railway
to 10% of its outstanding
shares, or roughly 43 million
shares.
Separately, the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation
Trust, which is also
controlled by Gates, holds
a 1.98% interest in the
railway, or roughly 8.6
million of its outstanding
shares.
As a result, Gates is
deemed to have a beneficial
ownership of and/or control
or direction of roughly
11.98% of CN, or 51.7
million of its outstanding
shares, for a combined
value of roughly $4.7 billion
based on yesterday’s close
of $90.36 a share on the
Toronto Stock exchange.
This not only makes Gates
CN’s largest shareholder,
but brings him closer to
the 15% foreign ownership
cap placed on the railroad
stemming from its
privatization in 1995.
Financial Post
Job vacancies rose in September: StatsCan
VANCOUVER – Statistics Canada says the number of job vacancies
has grown on a year-over-year basis.
The federal agency says there were 267,000 vacancies in
September, up 19,000 from September 2011.
As a result, it says there were 5.3 unemployed people for every
vacancy that month, down from 5.7 a year earlier.
Statistics Canada says the decline in the ratio of unemployment
to job vacancies was all the result of the increase in vacancies.
Provincially, the highest ratio of unemployed people to job
vacancies was seen in Newfoundland and Labrador, where there
were 11.2 people out of work for every open position.
The lowest ratio was found in Alberta, where there were just
1.7 unemployed people for every job vacancy.
The Canadian Press
Porsche reports record sales despite gloomy economy
BERLIN – German sports car maker Porsche AG says it has already
broken last year’s record sales number with one month left in 2012.
The company, which is now owned by Volkswagen, said today
it delivered 128,978 vehicles through November, more than
the total of 118,868 it sold in all of 2011 – at the time a new
record. Though many automakers are struggling with increased
competition in the low-end car market, the luxury market remains
strong.
Porsche, based in Stuttgart, says worldwide sales for the first
11 months were up 38.7% over the same period in 2011. In
Europe, where several countries are mired in recession, sales
were up a modest 6.8% but Porsche saw spectacular 71.4%
growth in the U.S. and 63.4% growth in China.
The neighbourhood surrounding
King Street West and Peter Street
has undergone a lot of transition
over the past decade, but it is nothing
compared to the dramatic development
planned for the next few years.
With proposed developments on
the northwest corner, and the sales
centre already open for Phase 1 of
King Blue condos on the southeast
corner, the neighbourhood should
have an influx of residents over the
next few years.
When Mountain Equipment Coop
opened its downtown flagship
store in 1998, King and Peter was
an ideal location. Located between
the theatre district and the soonto-be
redeveloped garment district,
streetcar access made it a transitfriendly
option, while plenty of surface
parking made it an easy visit for
suburban customers. Today, MEC’s
store is surrounded by condo towers
and the surface parking lots have
disappeared.
As new condos are built in the
area, services for new residents –
like restaurants and coffee shops
– have started to open. The Holiday
Inn has become a Hyatt, and
The Score has opened a street-side
studio. East on King, the TIFF Bell
Lightbox is another attraction, and
the city is planning a major redesign
of John Street: a “cultural corridor”
linking the Art Gallery of Ontario to
the north to Rogers Centre and the
new Ripley’s Aquarium to the south.
One building, still surrounded by
www.OrganizeWithPalma.com
info@OrganizeWithPalma.com
some of the last remaining parking
lots, is the Westinghouse Building
on the southeast corner of King and
Peter. This parcel of land, formerly
owned by David Mirvish, has had
a variety of uses over the past few
years, but was originally built for
the electrical company bearing its
name around the time of the Great
Depression.
Built in two parts – three storeys
in 1927 and the upper three stories
in 1935 – the Westinghouse building
will be the focal point of the new King
Blue condos, two towers planned at
44 and 48 storeys, respectively, developed
by Easton’s in partnership
with the Remington Group.
The south tower went on sale in
October, and will host a new Theatre
Museum of Canada on its second
floor. The north and west facades of
the Westinghouse building will be
preserved as part of the new structure,
and may be converted into a
hotel.
A rooftop bar on the north podium
will be open to the public, while
the sixth floor will feature a pool for
residents that opens on to a private
bar and patio.
Units in King Blue will range from
400-sq.-ft. studios to 1,100-sq.-ft.,
three-bedroom units.
With the city now discussing
plans to build the DRL subway under
King Street within the next 15
years, this neighbourhood will only
become more ingrained as a part of
downtown Toronto.
