Itʼs always romance with Tonya and Keith Hall!
The August people rose to the occasion
- the occasion being La Bash held
last Saturday night at Clark Hall. They
came out in droves! Amanda Gallagher
and her committee pulled off a wonderful
night with an 80ʼs theme which brought
out some great outfits including a “Risky
Business” pantless outfit. Some attending
were not even born in the 80ʼs but
everyone seemed to get the feeling and
they did dance to every kind of music
that was played.
Another old GLP postcard!
We would like to send
thanks to our GLP NEWS
columnist, Katy Reed of “Katyʼs
Kitchen,” who despite three,
pesky, painful surgeries on her
elbow has continued to worry
about her column but hasnʼt
missed a word. Thanks for your
efforts, Katy....... Good news!
Speaking of surgeries, friends
of Elaine Williamson who is
undergoing further surgery on
her knees, are happy to hear
that finally things seem to be
going well for Elaine. It has
been a long haul but she is
beginning to see an end to the
problems that she has had for a
couple of years....
We got a few calls from residents
on Main Beach about the
sand on the boardwalk. It
seems that since Superstorm
Sandy the boardwalk has been
inundated with sand. With a
real boardwalk the sand would
trickle through the boards and
back onto the beach. But on a
concrete boardwalk it canʼt do
that. So we ask that any residents
on Main Beach, including
renters, please just take a
broom and swoosh that sand
HEAR N THERE
back down onto the beach......
More good news.. Shelly and
Mark Youngʼs son, Matt, has
just gotten engaged to Courtney
Thompson. Matt did the
whole getting on one knee thing
which Courtney loved..... And
she said “yes!”.... Great article
in The Day last week on GLPʼs
Doug Volgenau. Dougʼs Naval
Academy classmates from
1959 put together a book about
their Navy experiences and the
classmate who inspired them.
That classmate is now Rear
Admiral Doug Volgenau. As a
midshipman Admiral Volgenau
was the 8th Company commander
and he led the company
to the title of best in the
brigade. The book his classmates
put together is a collection
of short life accounts written
by 37 members of his class.
Some of his classmates came
to GLP to present to Admiral
Volgenau the first copy of the
book entitled, “Sea Stories
From the Color Company.” The
presentation was made “in
grateful appreciation for your
superb leadership at the Naval
Academy, in the Navy and most
of all for your inspiration and
your continued friendship with
each of us.” We, too, at The
GLP NEWS would like to congratulate
Admiral Volgenau and
to tell him that he makes all of
us at GLP proud of him, too!.....
Donʼt forget, if your old flag is
ready to be thrown out there is
a box near the mailboxes
where you can put it and it will
be retired in a respectful way.
“FROM THE ARCHIVES”
“How It All Began
THE GLP News”
In issue #7, I addressed the
origins of the Archives. But
GLPʼs history canʼt be written
without discussing the News
itself where so many of our
experiences here at the shore
are captured. There had been
a paper of some kind at the
Point prior, but the News as we
know it today officially started
with Vol. 1, No. 1 on Wednesday,
July 2, 1941. Hereʼs the
announcement:
“Today marks the debut of a
new journalistic force in Groton
Long Point! The Groton Long
Point News, with more news,
more features and more advertising
than any publication hitherto
seen on the Point, makes
its first appearance with this
issue.
“The Groton Long Point News
is sponsored by the Groton
Long Point Yacht Club Inc., and
will be managed by Vice
Commodore W. P. “Sid” Burr
and Howell R. “Big Boy” Geib
who will be assisted by a large
staff of Groton Long Point journalists.
It will appear every
Thomas (Zack) and Lynn
Tsagarakis
860 535-0301
Wednesday during the summer.
“A subscription to the paper is
included with each club membership.
The paper will be
mailed to any place in the
United States. It has finally
been made possible for those
who would like fathers, uncles
etc., to read of their childrenʼs
athletic feats or of any other
news of the Point, to have
another issue sent….
“There are three hundred cottages
on the Point and this year
there will be three hundred
papers printed. If everybody on
the Point doesnʼt join the club
then, of course, it will be necessary
to sell the remainder to
those who didnʼt join. Here
again there is a change. There
will be no more weekly peddling
of the paper, but there will be a
campaign until those children
on the Point who want to earn
some easy money have finished
selling … subscriptions to
the non-members. Here is an
opportunity for those who want
to make some extra spending
money. For every dollar subscription
sold the salesman
gets twenty-five cents, and for
the special fifty center there is a
dime commission. [Note: perhaps
the lower rate was for residents
who didnʼt stay the entire
summer] If you care to take
advantage of this wonderful
offer, see Mr. Burr or come to
the ʻLaurierʼ cottage on the corner
of Shore Avenue and
Venetian Street.”
Today, the News is free and is
dropped off at our doorstep regularly,
on Fridays, by a troop of
friendly and dedicated delivery
people, much like 70+ years
ago. Thanks to our editor,
Luise. and to the young people
for helping to keep us all up to
date with whatʼs happening on
DID YOU
KNOW
KING TOM
King Tom farm in
Charlestown, RI is the former
home of the last Sachem of the
Narragansett tribe. Born in
1736, Thomas Ninigret was
crowned in 1746 with a headdress
of blue and white “peage”
(Wampum beads). Commonly
known as King Tom, the young
King displayed such promise
and ability that Roger Williams
helped to arrange for the boy
King to be sent to England for a
formal education. King Tom
returned to Rhode Island in
1750 with a set of house plans
and built “Sachem House”,
which is now the King Tom
Farm bed and breakfast. The
wainscoting and fine woodwork
were made by craftsmen in
Newport and shipped to
Charlestown. It is said that
King Tom was a “large, fleshy
man” with an “uncommon
appetite for strong drink”. He
slowly sold off the majority of
his thousand acre estate to pay
his debts. King Tom died penniless
and in a 'wretched state”
late in the winter of 1769. It is
said that the day before his
death, he dined in Newport with
the Governor. Sachem House
is only a stoneʼs throw from
Fort Ninigret and Coronation
Rock is also on the farm property.
Coronation Rock had
been used for many centuries
by the Narragansetts in their
coronation ceremonies.
Katys Kitchen
Pearl Burger and Chowder, a
perfect match!
Having lived in Newport, RI, one
of my all time favorite restaurants
is The Black Pearl Located on
Bannisterʼs Wharf in downtown
harbor area of Newport. For
many, many years we have
enjoyed dining in the causal pub
room, the outdoor patio and the
formal dining room. We have
seen chefʼs come and go but the
award winning chowder and the
pearl burger have remained a
constant staple on the menu. I
have included a version of the
chowder recipe that was on the
Rhode Island Show on June 2,
2013. But the recipe I want to
share with you is not published,
The Pearl Burger. After some
cajoling and some secret
research I have devised the Pearl
Burger recipe. It is easy and so
yummy. Not the neatest burger
you will ever eat but so worth getting
your fingers a little gooey.
The Pearl Burger with Mint
Salad
The best hamburger meat you
can buy, make 4-6 hamburger
patties
¼ of head of iceberg lettuce,
large diced
½ large cucumber, peeled and
diced
1 large tomato, diced
1 Tablespoon mint, mincedadd
more if you like mint
2 Tablespoons salad oil
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh garlic, minced
with Katy Reed
Salt and pepper
4-6 fresh Syrian bread pockets
Combine all ingredients except
meat in a stainless bowl.
Refrigerate at least 1 hour before
serving. Cook hamburgers, place
in a Syrian bread pocket and stuff
mint salad into pocket on top of
burger. Delicious!
GRAPE NOTES
by John Lombardo
Just Plain Fun
To Drink
There are wines for thinking
and there are wines for drinking.
By that I mean some wines are
of great complexity and pedigree
and ask the imbiber to
focus and contemplate the interplay
of flavors, acidity, body, and
finish. Furthermore, the introduction
of food can change the
impression of the wine and
gives way to more consideration.
Then, there are wines that
are just plain fun to drink. Not
much to think about here other
than they taste great.
Pearl Burgers from Katyʼs
Kitchen column are the perfect
foil for one of these fun-to-drink
wines. The principal ingredient,
hamburger meat, suggests a red
wine. Iʼm going to break with
tradition here and suggest two
specific wines. They are widely
distributed and should cost less
than $15. And both are blends
of numerous grape varietals.
The first is Marietta Cellars Old
Vine Red. The winery was
founded in 1978 by Chris Bilbro
and he named it after his great
aunt Marietta who taught him
how to cook and taste. The Old
Vine Red has long been a
favorite of mine. It is labeled
with a lot number and the current
release is 59. The wine is a
classic field blend meaning the
grapes come from vineyards
GLP NEWS Page 4
that are not of a sole varietal,
but rather a hodgepodge of
grapes. The lead varietal here
is Zinfandel, but there is also
Syrah, Petit Sirah, Cabernet
Sauvignon, and who knows
what else!
Youʼll fine bright, ripe notes
of berries and red flowers on the
nose. These aromas of red fruit
are supported by darker fruit on
the palate with licorice, minerals,
earth, and spices. Medium-firm
tannins provide structure and
balanced acidity lends brightness.
The mouthfeel is full, rich
and supple ending with a long
finish.
The second wine is The
Magnificent Wine Companyʼs
House Red. This winery was
founded in 2004 by the iconoclast
winemaker, Charles Smith.
Grapes are sourced from
throughout the Columbia Valley
in central Washington State.
The House Red is a blend of
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Syrah, and Cabernet Franc.
Look for spicy black and blue
fruits in the aromas. Red fruits
(cherries and strawberries) are
more prominent in the flavors
with complicating notes of anise.
There are some firm tannins to
lend the wine structure and the
flavors persist on the finish.
So, get the hamburgers off
the grill and enjoy one of these
delightful red wine blends.
Bethencourt at Centercourt
Womenʼs Doubles B section was won by Val
Benker and Sharon Viggiano!
“B” winners Val and Sharon.
Whoa! Womenʼs Doubles
semifinals was a cliffhanger!
Meg and Meg, Newell and
Bibby, pulled out a squeaker
win over Tenley Prince and
Katharine Miller with a 13-11
tiebreaker win in a ten game
pro set. Then, “The Megs,” as
we call them, faced off against
Ani Murphy and Stacey Weinstein
in the August Womenʼs
“A” Doubles finals. Ani Murphy
is all over the tennis pages lately
and Stacey Weinstein was a
nice, new addition to the
womenʼs tennis tournament
players.
“The Megs,” also known as
“The Queens of Lobs” took the
tournament with a 6-2, 6-1
score mainly because of their
lobbing strategy and because
they were royally patient. Their
lobs seemed to flummox Ani
and Stacey who just couldnʼt
figure out how to deal with
them. Stacey has a strong
backcourt game and Ani has a
very good net game but “The
Megs” were getting those lobs
in and keeping Stacey and Ani
running. But we have not heard
the last of Ani and Stacey and
they are bound to keep the field
of players interesting and have
already brought some new
blood into the finals competitions
“The Megs” and Ani and Stacey!
On to the Menʼs Doubles
and, Oh, Boy! If the Menʼs
Doubles gets any better theyʼre
going to make the spectators
pay to watch. It was absolutely
spectacular tennis. The four
combatants were at the top of
their games. Tim Kolnaski and
Alex Reed, first time partners,
and Bobby Congdon and Adam
Hill played wonderful tennis.
The first few games put
their talents quickly on display.
Tim served first and won his
serve with spins and lobs that
were accurate. Adamʼs serves
in the next game were powerful
and Timʼs reflexes at the net
were amazing to watch. Alexʼs
returns were deep and strong
and Bobbyʼs left handed spins
were hard to handle.
Both Tim and Adam lost
their serves and with Adam
serving again at 4-5 Tim played
a very controlled game going
Tim, Bobby, Adam, Alex!
GLP NEWS Page 5
down the middle with Alex
going deep to the back line and
Alex also got in a good alley
shot to take the first set at 6-4.
It looked as if we were
going into a third set as Bobby
and Adam fought back to 6-6 in
the second set. In this set
Adamʼs reflexes at the net were
mistake-free and Bobbyʼs
serves were stronger and
stronger. There were great
overheads that flew over the
fences on the part of all the
players.
There was no third set as
Tim and Alex won that tiebreaker
at 7-2. It was an absolutely
great match to watch!
A Visit to Carsons
Carsonʼs store was established
in 1907 and later was
conserved as a 1950ʼs diner.
Located in the middle of the
scenic Village of Noank, CT,
Carsonʼs store sells a delightful
selection of breakfast and lunch
pleasures, with varieties including
local beef from the Black
“R” beef Co. located in North
Stonington, Old fashioned Ice
cream from Bucks ice cream in
Milford, CT and coming soon to
Carsonʼs is… Fresh Oysters
from Mystic Oyster Company,
Noank, CT!
When we walk into
Carsonʼs, we feel like weʼve
time traveled to yesteryear. The
electric lime and ivory art deco
moldings are exactly where
they belong in the 2000ʼs, not
nearly out of place. The evergreen
barstools (an all around
favorite place to sit on Sunday
mornings,) are always jampacked
with the morning coffee
crew. Jars of candy galore take
their spot just beneath the large
black board that lists the available
ice cream flavors. A rack
of newspapers sits to the left of
the slush machine and penny
candy machines have taken
their place next to the screen
door.
Kellyʼs favorite breakfast at
Carsonʼs is a three way tie
between: a single stack of blueberry
pancakes; the Wildman
(two eggs cooked to order,
home fries choice of bacon,
sausage, or ham, toast and
either two pancakes or two
slices of French toast served
with syrup and butter); and last
but not least, the original
omelet (two fillings, with home
fries and toast). Annieʼs favorite
is the egg and cheese on an
English muffin. Her brother
Jordieʼs favorite is the chocolate
chip pancakes. (Oh, and he
says “Hi Mom!”)
KIDSʼ CORNER
GLP NEWS Page 7
by Kelly Ray & Annie Elliot
If laughter and happy chit chat
were a song, it would be the
only one playing at Carsonʼs.
Whether itʼs during the breakfast
rush or afternoon time
when packs of hungry teens
are there for lunch, simple good
times are always accompanied
by the sounds of coffee brewing,
bacon crackling, and the
friendly order swapping
between co-workers. We know
firsthand what itʼs like. As this
“symphony” of casual, fun dining
plays in the background, the
smell of delicious, simple, classic
dishes made to order fill the
air.
Kelly and her dad like to go to
Carsonʼs together when the rest
of their family is still asleep. A
delicious start to the day can
make you forget that the dog
woke you up at 7:30 in the
morning and helps you forget
that youʼre still tired. Every
time you walk into that 50ʼs
diner you may say “Wow!”(Well,
of course not out loud, but definitely
in your head.)
Carsonʼs has a way of making
you feel warm and bubbly
inside, itʼs kind of like when you
fake smile and then wind up
smiling for real. Maybe itʼs that
authentic 50ʼs look, or maybe
the waitresses who know your
order before you even say it,
but it makes you feel special.
Like out of the millions of people
on this planet, youʼre the
one who fixed global warming
or made world peace!
UP AND COMERS!
GLP NEWS Page 8
Half the fun of A-boat sailing
in GLP is getting to know and
trying to keep track of the many
families that are part of this storied
fleet. Just take the
Sandpiper, last weekʼs winner
of the weekly Point Race. On
board was skipper Woody
Bergendahl, whose parents
Peter and Linda, owned the
boat in the late 1970ʼs. Woody
was joined by his daughter Elia
and niece Ali Thomas, as well
as the McDonnell family, who
bought the boat from Peter and
Linda in the 1980ʼs…and then
sold the Sandpiper back to the
Bergendahl family in the late
1990ʼs. And thatʼs just one
boat.
Eight boats crossed the
starting line on Saturday in a
light and spotty breeze.
Cormorant, skippered by Laura
Grondin with Matt Ray and
Dave Burkard on board, rounded
the can at Horseshoe Reef
first. On the way to a leeward
mark off Main Beach,
Sandpiper took the lead.
Cormorant recaptured the lead
on the way out to
Seaflower, but lost
the advantage on
the way to Intrepid Rock to
Sandpiper and Swallow, sailed
by Frank Murphy, Jr.
Sandpiper held on to its
advantage as it rounded the
leeward mark on the way to the
finish line. As the race progressed
and the wind
decreased, it was a challenge
for each skipper to continue forward
on the race course, so
much so that the Race
Committee shortened the
course for the final four finishers
at the leeward mark. The
order of finish was: Sandpiper,
Swallow, Cormorant, Pelican,
Sanderling, Petrel, and
Skimmer. Darcie Watsonʼs
Duck did not finish.
Another highlight of race day
was the after-the-race party
graciously hosted by the
McAleerʼs. It was learned at
this party that one of the A-
boats, which has been inactive
for several years (Widgeon),
was most-recently purchased
by Rev. Connie
Young. The fleet
looks forward to having
the Widgeon back
out at the starting
line.
The A-fleet completes
the 2013 racing
season on
Sunday with Point
Races scheduled for
2 p.m. in front of Main
Beach.
We didnʼt realize it but the ladies posed in height order. From left
