This year, all Academic Award winners and Year 6 Special Awards (Dux, Performing
P & C Carols Evening
Last Monday the P&C held the annual Carols Evening. The evening
proved a great success and it was wonderful to see so many
members of the Galston community in attendance. The children
really enjoyed performing for the many grandparents, parents and
community members. We would like to thank Jo Stephenson and
the P&C committee for all of their hard work in organising the event. Thanks to the
many parents who assisted on the evening with cooking on the BBQ, operating the
canteen and many other things. Thanks also to The Galston Rural Fire Brigade who
attended and provided a Santa to distribute lollies to the children. It is also important
to recognise the efforts of the dedicated Galston Public School staff, who capably
organised class items. Special thanks to Mrs Bolger for conducting the evening and
organising the school choir. Our fabulous office staff also assisted with many clerical
duties to ensure the night proceeded smoothly. Thank you to all involved.
Premier’s Reading Challenge, 2012
Congratulations to all the students who received a Premier’s Reading Challenge
Certificate. They were handed out to the students at a special assembly. Special
congratulations to the students receiving a Gold Award this year – Eloise Barrett,
Aden Best, Sebastian Carran, Ben Cook, Jack Cook, Anyka Diancin, Ben Jeffrey and

Theodore Marlow. All students will be encouraged to participate in the 2013 Reading
Challenge.
Over-due Library Books
There are still a few overdue books that need to be returned to the library for
stocktake. It would be appreciated if these books are returned as soon as possible.
Any library books can be put in the blue returns box at the library door.
School Financial Rollover
Huge congratulations to our Administration staff, led by our wonderful
Administration Manager, Mrs Cordina, for the successful financial end of school year
rollover. This was not only undertaken in a very professional manner, it was
conducted with minimal fuss, and with no change to the high level of service that is
always provided to our students, families and staff.
School Parking and School Zone Speed Limit
On Friday 7 December, Galston Public School had a surprise visit from two
police officers. The officers were ensuring that all adults were observing
speed limits and obeying parking signs. The officers also issued parking fines
to some parents. This serves as a timely reminder that all parents need to
follow the school zone speed limit and obey the parking signs placed around the
school, especially in regards to not parking within 20 metres of the school crossing.
Your assistance in this matter will not only avoid a hefty fine, but will ensure the
safety of our students.
Parent Helpers
It has been wonderful to witness the number of parent helpers in
the school, especially in classrooms. This assistance is greatly
appreciated by teachers and certainly assists students with their
learning. It is also extremely beneficial for students to see mum or
dad helping in the classroom, as it demonstrates that education is
valued. Thank you to all parents who assist in the school,
whether it is in the classroom, canteen, uniform shop or
P&C. We greatly appreciate that you give up your time to help.

Thank You
Thank you to Lucas Barrett from Dural Music Centre. Lucas was able to provide
assistance to a Galston community family in need. A special request was sent to Lucas,
asking him to locate a unique guitar for Ben Gierek’s birthday. Lucas went above and
beyond to locate the guitar, as well as a set of headphones for Ben. Thanks to Lucas
and Dural Music Centre for supporting the community.
On behalf of the Gierek family…
I would like to thank everyone for their amazing support over the past six months. To
everyone who has offered support and kindness in so many different ways, please
know that the amazing community spirit of Galston has helped us get through some
very hard times.
Thank you to all the staff and families at Galston Public School for taking such care
and looking out for our kids. Thanks to Megan Chisholm and everyone at Your
Personal Power Training, as well as the Galston Club and the P & C for supporting us
with fundraising.
A special thank you Simon Edwards & Dural Music for organising Ben’s dream guitar
for his 40 th birthday – a day we will never forget.
Ben is currently undergoing a stem cell transplant this week, so we still have a long
road ahead but please know that your continuing support is much appreciated.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Class Item 1C
In 1C this term we have been reading, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice
Sendak. We have really enjoyed exploring this story through literacy activities and art.
In the story, a forest grew inside Max’s bedroom, so therefore a tree grew inside 1C’s
classroom. We experimented with a variety of art materials and created some of our
own wild things. We used food colouring and straws to create some interesting
monsters. We had a great time learning a poem called ‘Max was a Wild Thing’ to
present as our class item at assembly.

In maths, we have been playing lots of new TEN games. Our favourites include:
Islands, 9 Piles, Greedy Pig, We Love Maths, Swiper, 14, Blocks on Bowl, and Three
dice Add. We can teach you if you like.
We are now busy creating lots of Christmas crafts. We have decorated our classroom
and put our Christmas tree up. You are welcome to come and enjoy the festive
decorations. We wrote rescue plans, as we had to decide what we would do ‘If Santa
got stuck in the Chimney’. We have been finding the meanings of Christmas words
and deciphering lots of Christmas maths codes. Our biggest challenge this term has
been keeping our Secret Santa a secret. From all of us in 1C, Merry Christmas.

P&C News
What a wonderful night! The kids were full of energy, looking fantastic in their
Christmas outfits and they were extremely entertaining. Many teachers and parents
have commented on how great the night was.
As usual, there are many people to thank for bringing the night together:
Firstly, to the teachers for their enormous efforts in preparing the performers.
To the lovely ladies in the office for their part in collecting orders, raffle tickets and
preparing the programme.
To Alison Gierek, Meredith Wright and Sean Montgomery for helping to decorate the
hall. It was a beautiful festive background for the children.
To the Fundraising Committee (Michelle Vumbaca, Kathy Ballinger, Gail Philp, Liz
Eren, Kris Taylor and Tracy Lewer) for preparing and running the stalls.
To Emma Macdonald for organising and running the canteen.
Finally, to the enormous army of volunteers who answered the late call to help out.
In the end, there were so many of you that we lost track! Thank you so much, your
help is always appreciated.
This fabulous team of people worked together to provide a wonderful family night
and the haul of 27 Christmas gifts and hampers was a demonstration of the generous
nature of our school community. Thank you all. You raised over $2,000 which will
help the P&C achieve more goals in 2013.
Special thanks must also go to the Galston Rural Fire Service for their visit with Santa
and the opportunity for the children to climb into the twinkling fire truck. The bucket
collection raised $260.40 which will be sent to the RFS on behalf of the parents of the
school. Thank you all for your generous donations.
Many more photos from the Carols night are in the gallery on the school website.

Canteen News
Back by popular demand, more fresh baked Santa Cupcakes available this
Friday. Available only over the counter for $1.00. Ho Ho Ho!
Reminders: This is the last week of canteen. We are closed next
Wednesday for cleaning. There will be NO canteen the first week back
in 2013. Please be sure to check the canteen roster for term 1, 2013 and
contact Kath Ballinger if you need to make any changes.
Out of Stock Items:
According to our suppliers, we should have no out of stock items this week.
Canteen Roster News
I would like to thank all the volunteers who have given up their precious time to help
on canteen this year. Without your help, we would not be able to run the canteen for
our children, who really enjoy it. Also they get such a buzz seeing mum, dad or
grandparents helping out.
Next year you will notice some changes to the roster. Wednesdays now only have
two people rostered. As this is not generally a busy day we feel two people should be
able to cover it. With only two people rostered it is important that you do show for
your shift or make arrangements prior to the day for someone to cover you or swap
a shift.
Fridays now have an extra helper in the mornings. This is to ensure the
baskets/money is done quickly, leaving plenty of time for food preparation.
We are still looking for more volunteers to help either Wednesdays or Fridays. If you
can spare and hour or two, or maybe you are interested in becoming a supervisor,
please contact me on the number below. This is not a hard task and we have catered
for parents with pre-school children.
In the New Year a new availability form will sent out for you to fill in for Term 2.
New helpers will be most welcome
Canteen menu and roster details are displayed on the school website.
My contact details for canteen rostering: Kathy Ballinger – 0407 413 952.
