Real-time monitoring of earthquake activity in Australasia<br />

Since the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and Indian Ocean Tsunami, considerable effort has been<br />

directed towards improving regional monitoring of large earthquakes in Australasia. As part of its<br />

response to the 2004 disaster, the Australian Government is developing the Australian Tsunami Warning<br />

System, which includes a facility for real-time monitoring of earthquake activity in the Australasian<br />

region. As part of its attempt to rapidly characterize earthquake sources, this facility has implemented a<br />

system (based on the commercially available software platform Antelope) for real-time data acquisition<br />

and automatic detection, location, and magnitude estimation. In addition, it is implementing systems for<br />

automated CMT estimation and manual Mwp estimation. To our knowledge this is the first warning<br />

centre in the region that is implementing this array of techniques in a warning context. In this<br />

presentation we present an analysis of the performance of this real-time earthquake monitoring system,<br />

discuss the challenges to earthquake monitoring in the region, and canvas plans for the future.<br />
