Page 4 Cubcat News Walk To Cure Diabetes (Continued) "It feels good that people would do that for me," he said. "It shows that they really care." Connor was diagnosed in June of 2009, two weeks before returning to school. Hendersonville Elementary has played a vital role in his health since that day. "It was really overwhelming," Susan Kain said. "The school was just so supportive." She was sending her secondgrader to school with diet responsibilities and the new task of injections, which the school's nurse and staff had to help him with. "It was terrifying as a parent," she said. "It was almost like having a chemistry project every day." In the last three years, however, the fear has subsided and life is normal. Connor got a pump six months after his diagnosis, which is hardly noticeable through his clothes. "Now that I've gotten used to it, I'm pretty adjusted to it," he said. But Connor has been overwhelmed by the heartwarming gesture from the friends around Student of the Week: Weslyn him, and support from the community meant the world to him. Now all over the world people are walking to support diabetes like Hendersonville supported Connor. On the internet jdrf website I read we are very ‘’thankful for your support’’ ‘’ it changed my life’’ ‘’ I cannot express how thankful I am for your support’’ and many more people like Connor. William Gardo and Lauren Hart wrote about this for the By Shannon McDermott This week I have been looking around for a person that stands out, someone who cares and someone who is kind to others. After a search of the 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grades, I was pointed toward Weslyn McLaws in the 3 rd grade, by Mrs. Gardo. Weslyn is happy, spirited, and bright. She always has a smile on her face. She is always willing to help and is kind to others. Congratulations to Weslyn McLaws! Remember, this is not the only month you can be chosen for the student of the month. Keep being respectful and responsible and you might be chosen! Meet Mrs. Newman By: Flannery Newman Mrs. Newman has been teaching for 21 years. She started teaching at the age of 23 in Polk County at Tryon Elementary. She taught there for a long time and then she moved back to Hendersonville. She taught at Bruce Drysdale School for 7 years. Now she is a first grade teacher at Hendersonville Elementary School. She has taught every grade except for 5 th grade. Her favorite grade to teach is 1 st grade. Mrs. Newman loves to read. Her favorite subjects in school were reading and writing. When Mrs. Newman was a little girl she actually went to Hendersonville Elementary School! Except back then it was called Hendersonville Middle School and only had 4 th grade through 6 th grade. When she got older she went to Hendersonville High School and then to Appalachian State University. Fun Facts: Favorite animal – river otter Favorite food – macaroni and cheese Favorite book character – Junie B. Jones Favorite Disney character – Winnie the Pooh Favorite color – pink Fun Fact – She is my mom!
Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 5 The Glass Slipper An Interview With Some of “The Glass Slipper” Cast Everybody has now seen the play “The Glass Slipper!” Mrs. Byrd took the time to put all the equipment up and directing the play. The people that were in the play, practiced, practiced and practiced! I’m going to be interviewing Katie Lawson, Sophie Tanker, Anne Marie Jones, and Marea Pennell about their experiences in the play. Katie Lawson (Lady Arrgula, Pirate) CCNS: Do you have to work super hard in the play Katie: Well, you have to memorize your lines, so yes. CCNS: What was the hardest part in doing the play Katie: You have to not mess with the make-up, so that’s pretty hard. Sophie Tanker (Lady Luna, Royal Court) CCNS: What was it like being in the play Sophie: It was fun because you get to bond with other people that are in the play and it’s a friendship you can’t break! CCNS: How hard did you work in the play Sophie: Hard, because you have to memorize a lot of lines but it’s not like super hard or anything like that. Anne Marie Jones (Royal Court) CCNS: What was the hardest part in doing the play Anne Marie: Well, probably learning blocking and lines. CCNS: What is blocking Anne Marie: Blocking is figuring out where everyone stands during different scenes. CCNS: Would you do it again sometime Anne Marie: Yes! Marea Pennell CCNS: What was the funniest part of practice time Marea: Mireille couldn’t say “tartar sauce” so she always said “tater sauce”! CCNS: What was the saddest part of the play Marea: Leaving, definitely leaving! I enjoyed seeing the play, and it sounds like it was a lot of fun participating in the play.
