P & F in 2012
Each year, Redeemer’s P & F Association
leaves a trail of achievements that bring
measureable improvements to the daily
lives of our students, mostly through the
provision of upgraded facilities and
equipment. This has been the case for the
past 31 years. Naturally behind the P & F
is a small army of volunteers who work
extremely hard and passionately to
achieve their goals.
While it is easy to recognise and give
thanks for the funds that the P & F raise,
it is the building of community that
evolves from their activities, such as the
Fair, that are of greatest benefit to
Redeemer staff and families. On behalf of
the College, I cannot thank the P & F
sufficiently for all that they do. Therefore,
I encourage staff, students and parents to
personally thank members of the P & F
team. Needless to say, what Redeemer
has in the way of its P & F is something
we want to maintain for many years to
come.
For over a year, the wind of change has
been blowing behind the scenes. I refer
specifically to changes to the Workplace
Health and Safety (WHS) laws that come
into effect 1 January 2012. Changes to
WHS liability aspects of the laws mean
that Lutheran Education Queensland
governance bodies require the P & F to
hand management of the Tuckshop and
Uniform Shop to the College, effective 1
January 2012. In order to provide a
smooth transition and maintain P & F
functions as close to past practice as
possible, Redeemer’s College Council has
decided: that all P & F employees
continue in their present roles; that P & F
monies as they stand at the close of 2012
will remain with the P & F to be expended
as per past practice; and that income
from the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop
from 2012 onwards will not be expended
by the College without first gaining input
from the P & F Executive. These
arrangements are an interim step until a
new P & F constitution is put in place.
Have a Seat at Redeemer!
Visitors to Redeemer Fair on 22 October would have noticed a shiny brand
new grandstand which was set up outside of the new undercover Chapel
Hub area.
We are thankful to a Redeemer family business that has generously
donated six of these grandstands to the college. In the coming weeks, you
will see two of these grandstands appearing at our Stolz Sportsfields, with
the other four to be placed around the two ovals of our main college
campus (Scurr Oval and Fred Davey Oval).
As an opportunity for other parents to get involved, parents and friends of
the college are able to purchase a seat for just $50 each. In recognition, a
plaque will be placed on the seat with either your family name, or the
name of your child and the years they are attending the college. For
further information, contact the Business Office to book your seat!
As the College moves through these
changes, the goal is that students and
parents will not experience any reduced
services compared to what has been
provided in the past. The College Council
and Executive still want to see parent
volunteers in the Tuckshop coordinated
by the P & F Executive, and the hope is
that without the management
responsibilities of the Tuckshop and
Uniform Shop, the P & F Executive can
establish new activities or endeavours
while maintaining their meeting
schedule, sponsorship of Supporter
Groups and running the Fair.
In closing, I again thank the P & F for all
that they have done for the College this
year. I commend the P & F to all families
of Redeemer. Where possible I encourage
involvement, noting that the final
meeting of this year will be Monday 7
November 2011.
The Stress Reaction
Jacaranda blossom, however beautiful it may appear, is frequently
a trigger for severe stress in many people. Coming from the UK, I
had no idea why this could be so, until it was explained to me that
jacaranda trees are in bloom when students are studying for end of
year exams. In the UK, students do not have this timely reminder of
exam stress – triggers there are often the Wimbledon tennis
championships or wood pigeons cooing in the eaves of houses.
Stress is a word we are all very familiar with. In everyday language
it is generally used to indicate the negative effect of life pressures.
‘I feel stressed out’, ‘I’m so stressed I can’t think straight’. In fact, a
certain amount of stress is useful and necessary. It is one of the
factors which motivate us to achieve: it can be a stimulus for action
and is an important element in many areas of performance
including music, dance and sport. Moderate or short-term stress can
enhance memory and learning, but prolonged stress has the
opposite effect.
Every child will be different in the amount of stress they can deal
with and in how they perceive stressful situations in the first place.
What one child sees as exciting and stimulating, another may see as
completely terrifying. It all comes down to the unique relationship
each of us has between our environment and our own particular
abilities and temperament.
There are some normal reactions involved in the ‘fight, flight, or
freeze’ response. These are all very useful responses to actual threat
or danger and were particularly helpful for our ancestors when
faced with an attack from a sabre toothed tiger. If the reaction is
completed and the danger is dealt with, then the body can relax
again – there are numerous physiological processes which keep the
person ready for action. Unfortunately, we often produce the fight/
flight reaction in situations that don’t need a physical response. This
may happen when children are concerned about a test or exam,
being in a play or facing a difficult conversation. What is even more
of a problem is that negative self-talk tends to prolong the stress
response. If a child tells himself he can’t cope then his body will
continue to stay ready for action.
When stress is excessive or continuous over a long period of time,
even at relatively low levels, then we will experience a toxic buildup
of stress hormones which provide extra energy for the ‘fight’ but
which can also affect our memory capacity and will dampen our
immune system. We then tend to feel overwhelmed, fearful and
miserable and have a sense of dread. The effects of stress at an
early age can have far-reaching effects for our emotional wellbeing
making it more difficult for us to regulate our emotions in
later life. This could result in an over-reaction to minor stressors and
being physically on edge, hyper vigilant and unable to sleep.
Various techniques can help deal with the stressors, such as
relaxation; play; exercise; breath control and visualisations. By
encouraging children to listen to their thoughts and feelings, we
are teaching them to value themselves and giving them ways of
identifying potential overload and nipping it in the bud as soon as
those jacaranda trees start to bloom.
A New Television
There are a variety of technologies available for televisions
these days. I can’t pretend to know how they all work. So if I
go to JB Hi-Fi (or somewhere) to buy a new one, I’m
probably not going to ask a sales person to pull a television
apart and show me in intimate detail how it all works. The
sales person might be able to tell me a few basic things
about the difference between plasma and LCD, but not pull
it apart and show every single component. I am simply going
to buy a television at the best possible price and hope the
thing will work as it’s supposed to.
But on what does that hope rest? There might be a number
of factors that come into consideration. One factor is past
experience. I have learned from experience that large
televisions which are cheap, and of a brand name I am
largely unfamiliar with, may very well leave me
disappointed. Cheap televisions are cheap for a reason. I
have learned with experience of various products over the
years that there are certain brand names I will trust more
than others. The second factor is talking to other people
about it (not just sales people). As I research the market and
talk to friends I may come across some useful information in
my decision making, such as the benefits of one kind of
technology over another, or future directions in the
marketplace. So after doing the research and counting my
pennies, I make my decision, head off to the store, make my
purchase, and hope for the best.
I would not say that by not understanding every aspect of
television technology I have acted in blind faith. I have put
some degree of research into it, so I would prefer to think of
it as a more informed faith. That doesn’t make me an expert,
it just means I’m making the best decision I can with the time
and resources available to me. It seems to me that this is true
of life generally. That’s why I find it strange when critics
regard religion as blind faith, as commitment to something I
cannot prove, because almost everything in life requires such
faith. There is very little I fully understand or can prove in
this world, but I continue to operate with purpose and hope
anyway. Is there a better alternative? Hello….is that an
answer, or is that my own echo I’m hearing?? Like
researching a new television, I can make as an informed a
decision as possible without fully understanding every
aspect.
“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror;
then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then
I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” (1 Cor 13:12).
So is faith in God really all that blind?
