from President Brett Lowart
There is no more relevant
expression of sewing and
reaping than the work of a
Holy Cross educator in
challenging and educating
the hearts and minds of
students.
d
ear Alumni, Parents and
Friends,
Winter weather and the liturgical season
of Advent always stir a reflection
of Ecclesiastes and a greater belief that
God has a purpose for all seasons and
things.
Those of us devoted to educational
vocations are particularly inspired by
these scriptures that tell us that “wisdom
is better than weapons of war,”
and there is a “time to rend and a time
to reap.” Ecclesiastes has always
offered teachers and students (in
Catholic, private and public schools)
an assurance that learning is important
“as you do not know your path.”
I must also confess to having personally
used Ecclesiastes in my classroom
experiences with students, particularly
the line, “there is a time to keep silent,
and a time to speak!”
There is no more relevant expression
of sewing and reaping than the work
of a Holy Cross educator in challenging
and educating the hearts and
minds of students. We don’t specifically
know what each of our students
will become, but we have trust and
faith that our enterprises will encourage
a better world and a common
heavenly goal. In this spirit, the Class
of 2013 enters its final semester at
Notre Dame and is seeking admissions
to many universities across our
nation. We are proud of them and
applaud their ambitions to make a difference
in the world with their actions,
more than their words.
Again citing Ecclesiastes (“A time to
build up”), our next school “capital”
ambition is our new swimming pool,
which we expect to complete in the
fall of 2013. We continue to raise
funds for this $1.5 million project and
are drawing nearer to our goal
(approximately $1.25 million pledged
and counting). I am constantly
reminded by alums of the early 1960’s
pool campaign that involved the peddling
of countless chocolate bars.
Please be assured that our new pool
will be one of the “world’s finest” and
serve our students for many more generations.
Thank you for your support
of this project and our Light the Way
campaign.
On behalf of our faculty, staff and students
I wish you all a wonderful new
year of 2013, one which brings hope
to you and your families and one
which allows you to bring hope to
others. Please know of our prayers
and thoughts for all in the Notre
Dame family.
The honorary parade
“Onward to Victory...”
n the summer of 2010, Pat
Steenberge, President of the
Global Ireland Football
Tournament (GIFT), contacted
NDHS Athletic Director and Varsity
football coach Kevin Rooney. With
the hope of promoting American
football in Ireland, Steenberge was
putting together a tournament with
American and Canadian high schools
to play the day before the much-touted
Notre Dame vs. Navy game at
Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. ND was one
of nine American and two Canadian
high schools invited to play in the
Emerald Isle Classic and would be
slated to face opponent Hamilton
High School from Chandler, Arizona.
After a well-earned year’s worth of
planning and fundraising, just under
400 members of the Notre Dame
High School community (including
Tyler Goss flashes a “thumbs up”
from his Dublin hospital bed
the Varsity football team, the Varsity
cheerleaders, the Irish Knight Band,
members of the Sports Med team and
current and alumni parents) travelled
to Dublin this past August.
Highlights of the trip were plentiful for
all, but certainly ND's 27-15 victory
over Hamilton High School was no
doubt the most memorable! (Perhaps
not so memorable for Varsity football
Knight Tyler Goss ‘13 was the broken
collar bone he suffered on the first day
of practice, landing him in an Irish
hospital for surgical repair). Second
only to the Knights’ victory was the
University of Notre Dame's victory
over arch-rival Navy where an estimated
35,000 gathered to watch the long
sold-out matchup!
The pre-game parade also did not disappoint,
as ND's very own drum major
Irish Knight Band drum major Breandan
Molloy leads the band through the
streets of Dublin
Breandan Molloy '13 led the march of
over 2,000 players and cheerleaders
through the streets of Dublin and into
Trinity College’s quadrangle for a spirited
pep rally. “It's an all-American
football tradition,” noted GIFT organizer
Steenberger, “with the teams being
honored, all their cheerleaders, and all
their bands who've come from
America. The marching bands and
parades have turned the streets of
Dublin into Main Street USA for the
weekend!”
Experiencing the traditions of Ireland,
the beauty of the country, the hospitality
of its people and travelling with
friends and teammates will be memories
of a lifetime for those who took on
this adventure. Bringing the American
spirit and traditions of football to
Ireland, while taking in its unique culture,
was indeed a win-win for all.

mong the strategic initiatives approved in 2010 by the NDHS Board
of Directors was to modernize school facilities to serve 21st century
educational demands. Included in this scope were the renovation
and expansion of the school library and additional classrooms to improve
library functionality, technology and student capacity. The addition of three
new classrooms and new faculty offices also was part of the project.
As part of the Light the Way capital campaign, the $1.2 million fully-funded
project was completed this past summer just prior to the beginning of the
school year and a most impressive state-of-the-art library environment has
become a reality at Notre Dame High School.
According to school librarians Edith Darling and Tully Rosato, their collective
objective is to “provide personalized service and support for the individual
learning needs of our student community as well as the teaching needs of our
faculty in a dynamic environment.” The new facility defines “state-of-the-art”
and has indeed helped them to accomplish the task of integrating current technologies
with information resources.
The library’s floor plan is divided into six areas: the teaching area, group workstation
area, individual workstation area, quiet study area, lounge area and a
separate room for plays. Students in need of focus can sit in carrels or at one
of thirty individual desks in the quiet study room and our theater students can
browse well-known scripts and screenplays in the separate room dedicated to
the library’s collection of plays. The new layout also acoustically distributes
sound for optimal noise control.
Technology updates in the group areas include Wi-Fi and wired internet access,
two new smart boards, 80 new computers including laptops and desktops, new
monitors, an online catalogue for easy access to the stacks of print books and
a self check-out station. Students and faculty are particularly thrilled with the
new 26” Mac monitors in the group area.
Both teacher and student response to the new facility has been overwhelmingly
positive! The flexibility of the workspace and access to so many computers
have already contributed to increased productivity and the further development
of research -- skills which will serve ND students well in their overall academic
experience.
Notre Dame High School is especially grateful to the Ahmanson Foundation
for providing a $500,000 grant for the library renovation, and to all alumni,
current and past parents and donor/friends who made the completion of this
project possible.
(Special thanks to librarians edith Darling and Tully Rosato
for providing in-depth information for this article).
ardi Gras fun and frivolity were unmasked in late
October on the ND campus with the 2012 auction
and gala “Masquerade Knights.” Both the courtyard
in front of the gym and the gym itself were transformed into a
scene out of Bourbon Street, with Dixieland jazz streaming over
the airwaves. Silent auction tables were set up outside during
the social hour and the buffet dinner and live auction were held
in the gym. Actor (and former ND parent) Mark Walberg was
once again the MC and did a terrific job of keeping the audience
engaged with his wit and enthusiasm.
We thank those who sponsored this terrific event, as well as
those who donated to both the silent and live auctions and to
the President’s Privilege appeal. (This year’s President’s
Privilege proceeds will go toward the construction of the new
aquatics center). Lucky auction bid winners went home with
TV series set visits, luxury Hawaiian getaways and priceless
wines to name just a few. A $10,000 grand prize cash raffle was
also held to top off the evening.
The ND Auction and Gala is coordinated annually by the
Parents’ Association to raise awareness for the scholarship fund,
which benefits those deserving students in need of financial
assistance. A record-breaking $233,600 was raised this year and
will help to defray the $1.4 million that ND awards to nearly
400 students.
Many thanks to Special Events Coordinator Susan Armendariz
and her fabulous committee who oversaw this very successful
event and worked tirelessly to make the evening one to remember.
Special thanks to the following current parents who served
in key committee roles: Dana DeLena, Anita Engs, Shelley
Grayson, Tracey Hughes, Jaymie Monroe, Gladyz Montoya,
Elaine Quadra, Lisa Schori, Liliana Sedano, Margaret
contributed volunteer hours are also appreciated.
The Varsity football team finished the
season with an 8-4 record, sharing the
Serra League championship and advancing
to the quarterfinals of the Pac-5
(Division 1) Playoffs. The Pac-5 Playoffs
are among the toughest playoff divisions
in the nation.
Congratulations to Khalfani Muhammad
‘13 who was named Serra League co-MVP
and Kyle Sulka ‘13 who was named Serra
League most valuable lineman. Koa
Farmer ‘14, Anthony Gutierrez ‘13, Kelly
Hilinski ‘13, Matt McNab ‘13, Nick
Monica ‘13, Dominic Mugavero ‘13 and
JJ Muno ‘13 were named First Team All-
Serra League. Kyle Ause ‘13, Chris
Colarossi ‘14, Deion Dayao ‘14 and
Daniel Khan ‘14 were named Second
Team All Serra League.
Boys Water Polo
The water polo Knights fought a hard
season falling one game shy of making
the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs
for the fifth straight year. The
Knights won two sudden death overtime
victories against league rival Alemany
and also placed second in the Serra High
School Tournament. Goalkeeper Nate
Neglio ‘13 shattered the individual season
record for blocks, tallying 280 on
the year. He ends his Notre Dame career
with an impressive 538 blocks, making
him the most successful goalie in the
program's history. The Knights look forward
to next year with four of their six
starters returning.
Girls Golf
The Lady Knights won two tournaments
in October and went undefeated in
Mission League play for the fourth consecutive
year. Katelyn Reynolds ‘14
won the Optimist Tournament and
League MVP honors for the third year.
Most impressive was the team winning
its second CIF Northern Division
Championship! As a result of their hard
work and dedication, they are the best
girls golf team in the San Fernando,
Santa Clarita and San Gabriel Valleys as
well as Ventura County.
The team will miss Tina Nagai ‘13 and
Arielle Valdez ‘13 as they graduate and
continue their golf careers. They will
return eight strong players to continue
the Lady Knights’ winning tradition!

Boys and Girls Cross Country
The boys team finished fifth in the
Mission League and were ranked ninth
in the CIF Southern Section. They were
led by Matthew Meredith ‘14 who was
the team’s top runner all season.
Captain Jack Apablasa ‘13 along with
teammate Alex Reilly ‘13 helped the
Running Knights place at Mt. Sac, the
Bell-Jeff Invitational and at Stanford.
Lucas DeLeon ‘16, Brennan Doyle ‘15
and Christian Meyer ‘15 should make
the ND boys a strong contingent in
2013.
The Lady Running Knights had their
finest season in school history! They
qualified for the State Championships
for the first time ever and finished
eighth in the State Division IV.
Stephanie LaFace ‘13 won the Stanford
Invitational and teammate Kazia
Mermel ‘13 was the Mission League
individual champion, another ND first.
Rounded out by Captain Lily Peterson
‘13, Elizabeth Coda ‘16, Mia Gilbert
‘13 and Rebecca Vasquez ‘14, the ladies
won the Bell-Jeff Invitational, finished
first in both League cluster meets, ran
fourth at CIF (an ND best), fourth at
Mt. Sac, came in second at Stanford,
and won CIF Prelims!
Girls Tennis
The Lady Knights Varsity tennis team
finished in fourth place with a 5-5
League record. The season saw some
exceptional play by Julie De Filippis
‘14, Sophie Geha ‘15 and Avery
Wright ‘14. Coach Cupo and the girls
look forward to coming back next season
and challenging for the Mission
League championship.
Girls Volleyball
Congratulations to the Lady Knights for
making it into playoffs and competing
in CIF Division 1A. The team had an
overall record of 20-11. After last season’s
undefeated Mission League title,
the team swept through preseason undefeated
and headed into the tough
Mission League. The team finished
League with an overall record of 6-4
which included victories over Harvard-
Westlake and Louisville. The Lady
Knights headed into playoffs against St
Lucy’s, and made it to the semi-finals in
Division 1A. Another bright spot for
the Lady Knights volleyball program
was the JV team winning the League
undefeated, beating Harvard Westlake
twice for the first time in years!

ongratulations to Zana Muno
'15 who along with partner
Gianna Guinasso won the
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Best of
the Beach 16-and-under beach volleyball
tournament in Santa Monica in
July. Muno is the first athlete to win
the AAU Triple Crown of junior beach
volleyball, and even more impressive is
that she did it in the span of four
weeks.
In her hometown of Hermosa Beach
this past summer, she won the 16-andunder
titles in the two other major
tournaments on the AAU tour — the
national and the Junior Olympics with
two other partners. Throughout the
three tournaments, Muno and her partners
defeated competition from 12
states and players from Canada and
Puerto Rico as well.
Muno began her impressive young
career playing indoor volleyball and
needless to say, is a valued member of
the NDHS Varsity girls volleyball
team. The girls had a terrific season,
making it all the way to the second
round of CIF Playoffs.
Muno hopes to play both indoor and
beach volleyball in college. She is
presently looking into University of
Hawaii and Florida State but is also
interested in Notre Dame and UCLA,
who will both hopefully have sand volleyball
programs by the time she starts
college.
and more classrooms. Over $6 million in gifts and
pledges has now been raised toward the $7.8 million
Light the Way campaign goal.
Next on the construction list is to complete a new
aquatic center in 2013. We are now within $300,000 of
having the necessary funding pledged for the $1.5 million
project.
Tracey is no stranger to ND. Her husband Bill is a graduate
Angelique Bates engages students about
breaking into the “industry”
Fr. Ron Schmidt, SJ ‘62
Ryan Case talks to students about her
role on the hit series Modern Family
t
his past semester, Elisia Harkins’ TV
Production classes stayed busy with
visitors from the entertainment
industry.
In early November, TV students were treated
to a visit from alumnus Fr. Ron Schmidt,
SJ ‘62, an award-winning international documentary
filmmaker. His latest Holocaustthemed
film The Labyrinth: The Testimony of
Marian Kolodziej, has been in 21 film festivals,
has won nine awards and is scheduled
to air on PBS in April. In addition he has
produced numerous highly acclaimed video
projects, and has won two prestigious Silver
Telly awards for “Best in Category.”
Schmidt brought several of his past projects
to the class and gave advice on conducting
interviews and dealing with issues related to
making documentaries. The students found
his expertise most helpful as they are
presently working on a documentary of
their own.
Also on the docket was a visit from
Angelique Bates, the young actress best
known for the two seasons she served on the
Nickelodeon comedy/variety show All That.
She engaged the students by reminiscing
about her behind-the-scenes experiences
and giving them advice on how to break
into the competitive show-biz industry.
TV Production also welcomed Modern
Family's award-winning film editor Ryan
Case to the classroom later in the semester.
A graduate of NYU where she studied film
production, she was eventually hired onto
Modern Family because the director was
intrigued by her editing style. In addition
to Modern Family, she has worked on pilots
for Don't Trust the B - in Apartment 23, and
1600 Penn. She is also the first woman to
win an Emmy for editing of a television
comedy.
Tedesco is the son of legendary studio session guitarist
Tommy Tedesco. Back in the 1960’s through the early
70’s, Tommy was part of the elite group of Los Angeles
studio recording musicians known as the Wrecking Crew.
Fans of that era’s popular music were also fans of the
Wrecking Crew, whether they knew it or not!
The group played anonymously on many of the hit
records of the 60’s and backed dozens of popular singers.
(It may well come as a surprise to learn that the Beach
Boys didn’t play any of the instruments on their albums).
The story is told that Brian Wilson wanted the Wrecking
Crew to play on their albums because they were simply
better than the members of the Beach Boys! Other bands
of the era, to name just a few, who did not play on their
own albums were The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkel,
The Righteous Brothers, Sony and Cher and The Mamas
and Pappas. Wow…who knew
It was in 1995 that Tedesco, a producer by trade, set out
to tell their story on film after his dad had been diagnosed
with terminal cancer. According to Tedesco, “It was a way
of dealing with what was going on in our lives and also
wanting the world to know about the impact that my Dad
and his friends made in musical history.” So began his
tribute.
The project was indeed a labor of love. Completed in
2008, the film is a 95-minute documentary directed by
Tedesco. (Also on board his crew who gave tremendous
support was “little brother” Damon, a 1986 graduate of
Notre Dame and a veteran music recording engineer).
The movie is a mix of archival footage showing the
Wrecking Crew playing in their primes and interviews of
surviving members, not to mention a soundtrack of great
oldies of the era — 123 in all. Special personal footage of
Tedesco’s Dad before his death is also included.
The film enjoyed success on the world festival circuit in
2008 with great reviews and a dozen awards. The licensing
of the music, however, has thus far prevented a distribution
of the film. Tedesco has since engaged the
International Documentary Association to become the
fiscal sponsor in accepting donations on the film’s
behalf. Over $200,000 in music fees has been paid to
date. “I love paying off the songs,” he notes. “Each payment
gets us that much closer to a release.” The film has
been featured on Entertainment Tonight as well as in the
New York Times.
In the meantime, Tedesco has been able to raise money
through sharing the screenings with various non-profits
and charities, including his alma mater, Notre Dame
Alumni News Page 19
High School. This past spring, he and brother Damon brought the film to the El Portal
Theater in North Hollywood and raised close to $2,000 to help with the ND Irish Knight
Band’s trip to Ireland.
Tedesco is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and is currently producing promos,
videos and commercials for various companies and networks. He lives in the San
Fernando Valley with his wife Suzie and their children, Isabella 13 and Rafael 7.
12-13, some of whom had not been
back on campus in 50 years! They
enjoyed a pre-football game cocktail
party in the Holy Cross Center courtyard
on Friday night and were
brought out onto the field at halftime
to be introduced. They were also
treated to the most exciting football
win of the season with ND defeating
Crespi 40-34 in quadruple overtime!
Saturday, a tour of campus was led by
ND President Brett Lowart, followed
by Mass in the Brothers' Chapel and
the catered reunion dinner. Thank
you to committee members Jim
Adams, Steve Farley, Jim Nielsen
and Mike Parker for coming
onboard! Congrats to Jack
Intlekofer who received the
“Changed the Least Since '62” award
at the reunion.
The Class of '72 had a small informal gathering for their
reunion on the night of August 24 before ND’s season opener
football game against Serra High School. Those in attendance
had a chance to catch up in a casual setting before the game,
then enjoy the game itself. Later in the season they met once
again at Sportsmen’s Lodge for a more formal get-together.
Thanks to Sean McCarthy for his efforts in bringing his classmates
together.
The Class of '82 had its 30-year reunion weekend on September
14-15. Those in attendance on Friday night enjoyed pre-game
pizza and beer in the Holy Cross Center courtyard. The
reunion was held Saturday night at the Courtyard by Marriott
in Sherman Oaks. A number of Corvalis ladies also attended
the festivities. Veteran Denny Barrett once again was the MC
as he was at the 20th reunion, and by all accounts kept the gang
laughing well into the night. Mike Allegretti and Paul
DeCunzo are to acknowledged for being such “hands-on” committee
members and for distributing “82 Rah” hats to all!
The 20-year reunion celebration for the Class of 1992 was combined
with the annual post-Homecoming game alumni social
in the cafeteria. Many from the Class of '92 attended the ND
vs. Loyola game and the post-game event, as well as their
reunion the following evening at the Courtyard by Marriott in
Sherman Oaks. Over 90 were in attendance and from all indications,
had a terrific time catching up. Former faculty member
Pete Cassidy was the hit of the evening with many of his
former students anxious to chat with him. Thanks to Shannon
(Tuttle) Genova for her follow-up with classmates in making
this a very successful reunion.
Kudos to Kristen Chin, Lindsay Gary and Pilar Golden for a
terrific job on the Class of '02 10-year reunion committee!
Every detail was covered with perfection and the reunion weekend
was a terrific success. Held on the weekend of September
28-29, the 10-year reunion-goers began on Friday night with the
pre-game pizza/beer get-together in the Holy Cross Center
courtyard. Saturday they returned to the Courtyard by Marriott
for the reunion dinner/dance with about 90 in attendance.
Thanks to alum/dj Damon Tedesco '86 for spinning tunes of
the past decade throughout the evening!
Thanks to all who participated in your class reunions and supporting
your alma mater. Now on the planning block are the
Class of 1988 25-year reunion in the spring, and the Classes of
1953, '63, '73, '83, '93 and '03 on the agenda for next fall. Save
the Date letters will be sent out well in advance to those classes
once dates have been set. If you would like to be a part of
your reunion planning committee next year, please contact
ack on campus the day before Thanksgiving
was a spirited group of alumni basketball players
for the traditional mens and womens games
against our current players. So who’s “got game”
The 2012-13 Lady Knights had a great game, defeating
the alumnae 70-42. They were led by Katherine Wright
‘13 with 17 points and Jess Fukushima ‘13 with 16
points.
The “old-timer” alums (those who graduated before
2002) showed that they still had what it took in the second
game as they defeated the 2012-13 JV boys by 15
points.
The final game of the night was an exciting match up as
alums (2002-2012) edged out the 2012-13 Varsity
Knights by a score of 59-55. Top scorers for the alums
were Cody Pearson ‘01 (13 points) and Aaron Fisher ‘07
(11 points). The current Knights were led by Ryan Ducar
‘15 with 14 points.
Hosted by parents from both the boys and girls basketball
programs, the alums enjoyed food and refreshments
which included a catered Italian dinner. Thanks to first
year ND boys Varsity coach Vince Oliver for organizing
this annual event.
