Criminal <strong>justice</strong> <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>liaison</strong> schemes seek to work in a multi-disciplinary<br />
way to ensure that, where appropriate, <strong>of</strong>fenders with <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> needs are<br />
diverted from the <strong>criminal</strong> <strong>justice</strong> system to care <strong>and</strong> treatment from the <strong>health</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> social care sectors. They also seek to ensure that, where a prosecution is to<br />
be pursued, relevant information about an <strong>of</strong>fender’s <strong>mental</strong> condition is made<br />
available to the courts <strong>and</strong> crown prosecution service.<br />
<strong>Nacro</strong> has produced this <strong>directory</strong> with the aim <strong>of</strong>:<br />
• raising the pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> the valuable work <strong>of</strong> these schemes with commissioners,<br />
potential referrers <strong>and</strong> defendants.<br />
• ensuring appropriate referrals for assessment for defendants <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fenders<br />
with potential <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> needs.<br />
• increasing the communication between the schemes to aid them share practice<br />
<strong>and</strong> overcome any operational difficulties.<br />
• assisting areas with no provision to benefit from shared practice <strong>and</strong> establish<br />
new arrangements.<br />
<strong>Nacro</strong>’s Mental Health Unit has been working to tackle problems faced by<br />
<strong>of</strong>fenders with <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> needs since 1990. We work with government agencies<br />
at a national <strong>and</strong> local level to develop more effective ways to deal with <strong>of</strong>fenders<br />
with <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> needs. We provide a range <strong>of</strong> services: information <strong>and</strong> advice;<br />
policy development <strong>and</strong> other consultancy services; <strong>and</strong> training. We also run a<br />
major annual conference on <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> crime.<br />
<strong>Nacro</strong> has a specialist <strong>mental</strong> <strong>health</strong> website (www.nacro<strong>mental</strong><strong>health</strong>.org.uk)<br />
which <strong>of</strong>fers information <strong>and</strong> support for practitioners <strong>and</strong> policy makers working<br />
