Enis Ayar is something of a local legend in his native Ordu, a city on Turkey’s verdant Black Sea 

coast, where he has dedicated his life, against many odds, to building awareness of the region’s 

environmental and historical heritage. His creative exploits include organizing hundreds of VW Beetle 

owners to drive their colourful vintage cars from all across Turkey to draw attention to the plight of 

the Black Sea mountains, or making the 1000 km journey from Istanbul to Ordu solo and on foot. 

Rüya Arzu Köksal (Ankara, 1972) graduated with a BA degree in linguistics from Hacettepe University 

in 1994. She completed an educational documentary filmmaking program in Istanbul in 2003.

Away Game tells us the story of a group of young people with social and economic problems who 

live in Kuştepe, a neighbourhood in central Istanbul that may as well be a suburb. It is also the story 

of the group training to become football players. They are guided in this by a trainer from a similar 

background who mentors them based on his own experiences. 

Serkan Çiftçi (Istanbul, 1974) is an Istanbul based documentary director and film editor, who 

graduated from Istanbul University with a degree in journalism in 1998. Between 2000-2010 

he worked at Istanbul Bilgi University as a technical specialist and consultant for the Faculty of 

Communications’ TV Studio. He is currently continuing his documentary work and also working as 

a film editor.

The film tells of the unlawful practices that children have to put up with due to the Prevention of 

Terrorism Act (PoTA), and the extent of the physical and psychological violence they are subjected 

to. The documentary questions the ‘petrifying brutal consciences’ of our country, where more than 

4000 children are standing trial, hundreds are still under arrest, and dozens are found guilty and 

sentenced to prison terms two or three times longer than their years. 

Cenk Örtülü (Istanbul, 1976) studied economics. He has attended several short film workshops and 

has been working at Asi Film since October 2006. Zeynel Koç (Sivas, 1969) has attended several film 

workshops and has been working on documentary films for the last four years.

and documentary shorts in the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe, which were screened and won 

awards in more than 50 festivals, as well as broadcast on several European television channels. They

Concrete Park is the name of a lacklustre concrete hangout for the youth of Ordu, a typical city in 

the Black Sea region of Turkey. There you encounter a cross-section of mostly young men, all of 

whom struggle to overcome the odds offered to them by a weak economy and a lack of prospects 

for the future. Some take a defeatist attitude, others make the most of their limited options, and all 

reveal the struggles, challenges, and dead-ends that becoming a man in today’s Turkey can entail. 

Berke Baş studied political science and international relations at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul and 

earned a master’s degree in media studies at New School for Social Research, New York. She cofounded 

inHouse projects, a media collective, in New York in 1998.

This documentary chronicles the place of the traditional wire-walking show within Turkey’s 

entertainment culture, tracing its history back to the rituals of Central Asian shamanist Turkic culture 

and its transformation into a performing art. Setting off from the shows of Turkey’s last wire-walker, 

the film explores the stories of former artists still alive today and looks at a generation which grew 

up watching the shows. 

Serdar Güven (Iznik, 1975) graduated from the Mechanics Department of Niğde University. He 

started working on documentary projects as a cameraman. In 2007 he founded Maya Film with a 

view to directing his own documentary projects.

Dream Gang is the tragicomic story of three treasure hunters who live in a village located on 

the slopes of the Kure Mountains in Turkey. The central characters, Arif (67), Mehmet (56) and 

Refik (48), have spent more than 20 years searching for treasure which they believe to be hidden 

somewhere in the mountains.

At one end of the chain are pairs of popular stone-washed jeans; at the other is the human 

labour that goes into producing them, people who have contracted fatal lung diseases toiling in 

unregistered workshops. While the more expensive stonewashed jeans are sold, the workers’ lives 

fade away. Very fast. 

Petra Holzer studied media and communications and theatre, film and media at the University of 

Vienna. She lives and works as a documentary filmmaker and researcher in Istanbul. Ethem Özgüven 

is a video and documentary filmmaker. Many of his videos have been presented at international 

festivals. Selçuk Erzurumlu has worked as cameraman and editor for many projects since graduating 

from the film and television department of Istanbul Bilgi University.

This documentary is about the difficult lives of women in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It takes its 

name from the subject of the film, Ifakat, who, along with her two daughters, was the victim of an

Orhan Tekeoğlu (Trabzon, 1957) started his career as a journalist in 1983, when he graduated from 

university. He has travelled extensively in Turkey and overseas due to his profession, introducing

The last remaining nomads of Anatolia, the Sarıkeçililer, migrate from winter locations to summer 

locations, and from summer locations to autumn locations, just as their ancestors once did. Today, 

as agricultural land grows ever larger, as forestation escalates and pastureland becomes increasingly 

protected by the legal entities of villages, the Sarıkeçili nomads have fewer and fewer migration 

routes; and they are themselves decreasing in numbers. 

Yüksel Aksu (Muğla, 1966) graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Department of Film and Television 

and then completed his master’s degree. In 2006 he wrote, produced and directed the very low 

budget feature film Ice Cream, I Scream which was Turkey’s nominee for the Best Foreign Language

Every morning, millions in Turkey are glued to their screens for the TV show ‘Marriage with Esra 

Erol’. The program aims to match and marry people in front of the camera. Every detail about the 

dreams and fears of the lucky selected candidates is shown on screen, tugging at the hearts of the 

studio audience, as well as viewers in every city, town or village with a TV signal. The key to looking 

and seeing, director Doğa Kılcıoğlu seems to remind us, is sincerity in the eye of the beholder. 

Doğa Kılcıoğlu (Izmir, 1980) graduated from Galatasaray University. Her documentary With Three 

Ears (2003) won the Best Documentary Award at the Golden Orange Film Festival. In 2005, she 

went to Paris to study film at the Sorbonne. She and Can Kılcıoğlu founded DeliCe Film in 2008.

Building constructor Mehmet lives with his family in Mardin, south-eastern Turkey, a melting pot 

of different religions and cultures. His eldest son Haydar, a student at film school, decides to shoot 

a film about his father. As a Muslim, Mehmet has been repairing an Assyrian church with his coworkers 

in one of the Mesopotamian villages. 

Haydar Demirtaş (Mardin, 1984) received his first cinema training at the BBC. He then won a 

scholarship to study art and design at Istanbul Kültür University. His first documentary, Itinerant 

Smith, was screened at several national and international festivals, winning a number of awards. 

He has been working as a volunteer at the Mardin Youth and Culture Centre since 2000 and at 

Community Volunteers (TOG) since 2005. He is still a student at Istanbul Kültür University.

The documentary film The Other Town is about the natives of a Greek and a Turkish town, who 

express their opinions about the neighbouring nation. The two nations were enemies many decades 

ago, but ill feelings still persist, expressed in the form of myths and prejudices. Local people of all 

ages seem to be trapped in a web of stereotypes which ruin their bilateral relations. 

Nefin Dinç is an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Fredonia. She studied

The septuagenarian Musa Dede is one of the leading Alevi dedes who established the first cemevi 

(gathering house) in Turkey. Having spent his childhood and early youth in traditional Alevi practices, 

Musa Dede contributes to modern-day spiritual life as a man who has witnessed the recent history 

of Turkey. 

Özkan Küçük (Dersim, 1975) completed his MA in Marmara University, Department of Radio-TV- 

Cinema with his thesis entitled ”Cinema of Turkey during Nineties”. He worked as scriptwriter, art 

director, assistant director, editor, cameraman and producer in Kazım Öz’s and Özcan Alper’s films. 

He realized six video-documentaries. He is currently working for his first feature film.

Having come with his family from Yozgat to Istanbul in 1928 and been settled in Beyoğlu since 1935, 

the Armenian second-hand bookseller Vahan Kocaoğlu (b. 1925) is a living witness of the social and 

socio-cultural transformations Istanbul has undergone since the 1930s. Kocaoğlu has also observed 

many breaking points in the country’s history, such as the pogrom of September 6-7, 1955. 

Esra Yıldız (Istanbul, 1981) graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a degree in 

environmental engineering in 2002. She is currently doing a PhD in social sciences at the same 

university and is a guest post-graduate researcher at the History and History of Art Department of

Young Filmmaking Project in Turkey is a project to teach 72 students how to make short 

documentaries or fiction films on democracy and human rights. The documentary film will capture 

the entire process of the Youth Filmmaking Project in Turkey, including classroom lectures and fiery 

debates about social issues, the challenges students face in making their films, the problems involved 

in convincing their families and officials to make their films, the culture shock they experience while

Venerable is the story of an old woman who unwittingly became involved in the political milestones 

of the last 50 years in Turkey thanks to her children. Set in the village of Nif in the Fethiye region,

This documentary is set against the backdrop of the westernization movement, which began 

with the declaration of Turkey’s Second Constitutional Monarchy in 1908. Its story is provided by 

Constantinople’s stray dogs, a key figure in the conflicts of attitude that marked the period, and 

their deportation to the nearby Island of Okseia (Sivriada). 

Emre Sarıkuş (Istanbul, 1983) graduated from the Sociology Department of Istanbul Bilgi University, 

then went on to train in sports media at Kadir Has University. He writes documentary and fiction 

scripts and is currently working on a book of stories about the social history of Turkey.

In Darfur’s refugee camps, two million people, mostly women and children, live without food, 

shelter, health, security, education or justice. The powers in the world show us everything in the 

form they want, only Darfur is not included because cameras are not allowed in. Clinic reflects the 

humanitarian situation in Darfur as seen from a Turkish hospital.

On the Coast is a short experimental film on the ephemeral feeling of summer, as observed in 

Erikli, a small town on the Aegean coast of Turkey. The film reflects on the nature of vacations as a

Merve Kayan (1981) has been making films and videos since 1999. Having spent the last few years 

as a video editor in New York, she is currently pursuing a master’s in fine arts at the University of 

California, San Diego. 

Zeynep Dadak (1978) has been producing short films and documentaries since 2001. She is currently 

working on a doctoral degree at the Film Studies Department of New York University. She has been

The film takes a look at village women in southeastearn Turkey who have to learn basic German 

in order to reunite with their husbands who works in Germany. Dozens of women, young and old, 

married and engaged alike, take a three-month course in German at the village school. These are 

women been left behind by a wave of emigration fuelled by unemployment. Some are illiterate, 

some aren’t allowed to continue classes and others lack the courage to take the exam.

Seventy-one-year-old Mustafa feels negligent about not teaching his mother tongue to his own 

children when he hears the language referred to as ‘endangered’. He is full of self-recrimination and 

feels partly responsible for his first language being consigned to history. Although he has been told 

to rest and not to get overexcited after a recent operation, he decides to take his grandson’s digital 

camera and record himself speaking as much as he can remember of his fast disappearing language.

The film centres around people forced to move to the city after the evacuation of their villages. 

Biskov (Trouser Button) earns his life by having customers emancipate his tame pigeons. One day

Based on a true story, the film chronicles the fate of Aamir Ageeb, an immigrant from Sudan, who 

was deported from Frankfurt Airport in 1999. 

Güçlü Yaman (Istanbul) studied Computer Media Science. He began his career as a director and 

scenarist of the short film The Test, a political satire about naturalization tests in Germany which 

won prizes at festivals. He is currently lives in Frankfurt.
