Enis Ayar is something of a local legend in his nati<strong>ve</strong> Ordu, a city on Turkey’s <strong>ve</strong>rdant Black Sea<br />

coast, where he has dedicated his life, against many odds, to building awareness of the region’s<br />

environmental and historical heritage. His creati<strong>ve</strong> exploits include organizing hundreds of VW Beetle<br />

owners to dri<strong>ve</strong> their colourful vintage cars from all across Turkey to draw attention to the plight of<br />

the Black Sea mountains, or making the 1000 km journey from Istanbul to Ordu solo and on foot.<br />

Rüya Arzu Köksal (Ankara, 1972) graduated with a BA degree in linguistics from Hacettepe Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity<br />

in 1994. She completed an educational documentary filmmaking program in Istanbul in 2003.<br />

Away Game tells us the story of a group of young people with social and economic problems who<br />

li<strong>ve</strong> in Kuştepe, a neighbourhood in central Istanbul that may as well be a suburb. It is also the story<br />

of the group training to become football players. They are guided in this by a trainer from a similar<br />

background who mentors them based on his own experiences.<br />

Serkan Çiftçi (Istanbul, 1974) is an Istanbul based documentary director and film editor, who<br />

graduated from Istanbul Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity with a degree in journalism in 1998. Between 2000-2010<br />

he worked at Istanbul Bilgi Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity as a technical specialist and consultant for the Faculty of<br />

Communications’ TV Studio. He is currently continuing his documentary work and also working as<br />

The film tells of the unlawful practices that children ha<strong>ve</strong> to put up with due to the Pre<strong>ve</strong>ntion of<br />

Terrorism Act (PoTA), and the extent of the physical and psychological violence they are subjected<br />

to. The documentary questions the ‘petrifying brutal consciences’ of our country, where more than<br />

4000 children are standing trial, hundreds are still under arrest, and dozens are found guilty and<br />

sentenced to prison terms two or three times longer than their years.<br />

Cenk Örtülü (Istanbul, 1976) studied economics. He has attended se<strong>ve</strong>ral short film workshops and<br />

has been working at Asi <strong>Film</strong> since October 2006. Zeynel Koç (Sivas, 1969) has attended se<strong>ve</strong>ral film<br />

Concrete Park is the name of a lacklustre concrete hangout for the youth of Ordu, a typical city in<br />

the Black Sea region of Turkey. There you encounter a cross-section of mostly young men, all of<br />

whom struggle to o<strong>ve</strong>rcome the odds offered to them by a weak economy and a lack of prospects<br />

for the future. Some take a defeatist attitude, others make the most of their limited options, and all<br />

re<strong>ve</strong>al the struggles, challenges, and dead-ends that becoming a man in today’s Turkey can entail.<br />

Berke Baş studied political science and international relations at Boğaziçi Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity, Istanbul and<br />

earned a master’s degree in media studies at New School for Social Research, New York. She cofounded<br />

inHouse projects, a media collecti<strong>ve</strong>, in New York in 1998.<br />

This documentary chronicles the place of the traditional wire-walking show within Turkey’s<br />

entertainment culture, tracing its history back to the rituals of Central Asian shamanist Turkic culture<br />

and its transformation into a performing art. Setting off from the shows of Turkey’s last wire-walker,<br />

the film explores the stories of former artists still ali<strong>ve</strong> today and looks at a generation which grew<br />

up watching the shows.<br />

Dream Gang is the tragicomic story of three treasure hunters who li<strong>ve</strong> in a village located on<br />

the slopes of the Kure Mountains in Turkey. The central characters, Arif (67), Mehmet (56) and<br />

At one end of the chain are pairs of popular stone-washed jeans; at the other is the human<br />

labour that goes into producing them, people who ha<strong>ve</strong> contracted fatal lung diseases toiling in<br />

unregistered workshops. While the more expensi<strong>ve</strong> stonewashed jeans are sold, the workers’ li<strong>ve</strong>s<br />

This documentary is about the difficult li<strong>ve</strong>s of women in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It takes its<br />

name from the subject of the film, Ifakat, who, along with her two daughters, was the victim of an<br />

Orhan Tekeoğlu (Trabzon, 1957) started his career as a journalist in 1983, when he graduated from<br />

locations, and from summer locations to autumn locations, just as their ancestors once did. Today,<br />

as agricultural land grows e<strong>ve</strong>r larger, as forestation escalates and pastureland becomes increasingly<br />

protected by the legal entities of villages, the Sarıkeçili nomads ha<strong>ve</strong> fewer and fewer migration<br />

The documentary film The Other Town is about the nati<strong>ve</strong>s of a Greek and a Turkish town, who<br />

express their opinions about the neighbouring nation. The two nations were enemies many decades<br />

ago, but ill feelings still persist, expressed in the form of myths and prejudices. Local people of all<br />

ages seem to be trapped in a web of stereotypes which ruin their bilateral relations.<br />

Nefin Dinç is an assistant professor at the State Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity of New York at Fredonia. She studied<br />

economics at Ankara Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity and earned a master’s degree in media and culture from Strathclyde<br />

The septuagenarian Musa Dede is one of the leading Alevi dedes who established the first cemevi<br />

(gathering house) in Turkey. Having spent his childhood and early youth in traditional Alevi practices,<br />

Musa Dede contributes to modern-day spiritual life as a man who has witnessed the recent history<br />

of Turkey.<br />

Özkan Küçük (Dersim, 1975) completed his MA in Marmara Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity, Department of Radio-TV-<br />

Cinema with his thesis entitled ”Cinema of Turkey during Nineties”. He worked as scriptwriter, art<br />

director, assistant director, editor, cameraman and producer in Kazım Öz’s and Özcan Alper’s films.<br />

Having come with his family from Yozgat to Istanbul in 1928 and been settled in Beyoğlu since 1935,<br />

the Armenian second-hand bookseller Vahan Kocaoğlu (b. 1925) is a living witness of the social and<br />

socio-cultural transformations Istanbul has undergone since the 1930s. Kocaoğlu has also obser<strong>ve</strong>d<br />

many breaking points in the country’s history, such as the pogrom of September 6-7, 1955.<br />

İKD (the Association of Progressi<strong>ve</strong> Women) was a socialist women’s organization established in<br />

1975 and abolished in 1979 prior to the 1980 coup d’état. Although it was the first women’s<br />

organization to celebrate International Women’s Day with the masses in public spaces, members<br />

did not define themsel<strong>ve</strong>s as ‘feminists’…<br />

Necati Sönmez studied aeronautical engineering at Istanbul Technical Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity. After working as a<br />

film critic, journalist and photographer, he branched into documentary filmmaking in 2003.<br />

Emel Çelebi studied English literature. She worked in various magazines as editor, interpreter and<br />

writer. Her first film Housekeeper won prizes in Turkey and abroad. She is also among the organizers<br />

of Documentarist-Istanbul Documentary Days.<br />

This is a cinematic pilgrimage by two young Turkish directors to their biggest source of inspiration,<br />

Ingmar Bergman. Their desire to approach e<strong>ve</strong>n further to Bergman and to his work leads them to<br />

make this journey from their hometown Istanbul to Sweden, the land of Bergman.<br />

Hakkı Kurtuluş (1980) studied communications, film and German language at the Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsities of<br />

Galatasaray, Lyon, Paris, Tübingen, Weimar and Berlin. Melik Saraçoğlu (1984) studied film and<br />

literature under a double major program at Lumière Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity Lyon 2.<br />

Se<strong>ve</strong>nty-one-year-old Mustafa feels negligent about not teaching his mother tongue to his own<br />

children when he hears the language referred to as ‘endangered’. He is full of self-recrimination and<br />

feels partly responsible for his first language being consigned to history. Although he has been told<br />

to rest and not to get o<strong>ve</strong>rexcited after a recent operation, he decides to take his grandson’s digital<br />

camera and record himself speaking as much as he can remember of his fast disappearing language.<br />

Veli Kahraman (Ankara, 1967) studied scenery and visual arts at the Mimar Sinan Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity Faculty<br />

of Fine Arts. He won Best Art Director awards at the 2009 Ankara <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> for Cars of the<br />

Revolution and at the 2005 Adana Altın Koza <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> for Istanbul Tales.<br />

The film centres around people forced to mo<strong>ve</strong> to the city after the evacuation of their villages.<br />

Biskov (Trouser Button) earns his life by having customers emancipate his tame pigeons. One day<br />

on his way back home some youngsters call Biskov out to the ruins they hang out in. The e<strong>ve</strong>nts<br />

he witnesses at the ruins and the words his grandma says to him afterwards bring Biskov to a<br />

crossroads. The trouser button gets ripped out.<br />

Born in Tunceli, Arin Inan Arslan shot his first short Crumb in 2004. In 2005, he graduated from<br />

Ege Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity as a teacher of computer studies. He continues his career today as an independent<br />

filmmaker. His films Crumb (2004) and Shadow and Wind (2006) won numerous national and<br />

international awards.<br />

February 1980: Turkey’s political right and left are in chaos… A young group of TDKP (Revolutionary<br />

Communist Party of Turkey) members protest their friend’s death. While escaping from soldiers, one<br />

of the students shoots into the air and is arrested. Despite being only 16 years old, he is sentenced<br />

to death by the military court.<br />

Nihan Belgin (Istanbul, 1986) became interested in music, painting and theatre during her school<br />

years. She started working professionally as an assistant director in the movie Dark Side of the Moon<br />

Set in a village in Kastamonu, Waiting is the story of a father lying on his sickbed awaiting death,<br />

and a mother awaiting the arrival of her son to see his father for perhaps the last time.<br />

Burak Çevik, a student at Şişli Terakki High School, is highly invol<strong>ve</strong>d in photography and short<br />

filmmaking. He has won se<strong>ve</strong>ral awards in high school film competitions and hopes to study<br />

cinema at uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity. Kutay Denizler studied radio-television. During his time at high school he won<br />

se<strong>ve</strong>ral awards for the short films he made. He is currently studying at the Visual Communications<br />

A girl is waiting for her friend; her friend is rushing to meet her. Meanwhile a cat is playing with a pine<br />

cone and a bird flying out of its nest. When the friends see each other they start running towards one<br />
