Powers and Dominions
Angels, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare
In all of God’s creation we see such splendor and
beauty, mystery and wonder. Within this creation
there are beings with intellect and free will:
humans and angels.
From the creation of the world, the realm of the
angels and the world of men have interacted. This
interaction is not always a positive one.
This film explores the spiritual world, that very
real but unseen realm: God, the human soul,
angels, demons (fallen angels), spiritual warfare,
the reality of demonic possession and exorcism, the
dangers of the new age movement and the occult,
and much more. Featuring well-known speakers
and authors Steve Ray, Fr. Andrew Pinsent, Fr.
Marcus Holden, Joanna Bogle, Fr. Jeremy Davies
and Fr. Behruz Rafat, this film offers an insightful
and sobering presentation about the reality of
the powers and dominions of the spiritual world.
Inspirational music, beautiful artwork and imagery
are used throughout the film.
In Her Footsteps:
The Story of St. Kateri Tekakwitha
For 350 years, this Christian Mohawk woman
has been interceding for and inspiring natives
and non-natives around the world. On October
2012, Kateri Tekakwitha became the first Native
North American woman to be recognized as a
Saint.
This powerful documentary takes us on a journey
from northern New York State to Montrèal
and Kahnawàke; from Washington State to New
Mexico, as we follow St. Kateri’s incredible journey
of deep faith, heroic sacrifice and great love
of Christ.
The film features many people who have
been touched by her—including Philadelphia’s
Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM, of the
Prairie Band Potawatomi tribe, the only Native
American archbishop; Bishop James Wall of
Gallup, NM, the diocese with the largest number
of Native American Catholics; Sr. Kateri Mitchell,
SSA, the Executive Director of the Tekakwitha
Conference, and Jake Finkbonner, the little boy
who received the miraculous healing that saved
his life and that led to Kateri’s canonization.
This moving documentary film shows that
no one is too simple, too poor or too young to
give their lives to Christ, and that this woman,
an outcast by her people because of her Catholic
faith, whose face was badly scarred from smallpox
and vision almost lost, is a true model for
modern believers and a powerful source of grace
and healing for all.
Catholics and the Culture War
Catholic apologist and radio host Tim Staples demonstrates how several
minor “battles” over the last 65 years have led to us to where we are
now… in a full-fledged war between two very different schools of thought
when it comes to what society says is right... or wrong. It’s a vivid look at
what America used to be like—and how dramatically we have changed.
The good news is that we can turn this situation around. We can regain
lost ground. We can win the battle for our culture. After watching Catholics
and the Culture War, you will have a much clearer grasp of precisely what
has gone wrong in American society, how we have been betrayed by our
institutions of government, and how we can draw strength from our own
Christian past and Catholic faith to overcome today’s challenges.
Defending Your Faith
How to Counter Standard Objections to Catholicism
Catholic Answers’ Director of Apologetics, Tim Staples, presents some
of the most common challenges to Catholicism, and gives you solid,
Biblically-based answers that you can use to refute them. Along with the
scriptural evidence, Staples also explains the beautifully rational arguments
which make these same teachings come alive in our hearts and
minds.
In offering these common objections, Staples traces his own path—
intellectually and spiritually—from Protestantism to Catholicism.
Answering these sorts of questions, Staples says, “was the first step, for
me, on the road to Rome.” Let Tim show you where the pertinent passages
are that explain the Catholic position, as well as some of the logical
and rhetorical strategies you can use in any situation.
world.
• How do I deal with temptations
• If I fall, how do I start over and regain purity
Whether you are in a relationship, looking for love, or just trying to understand
God’s plan for properly using the gift of sexuality he has given to
you, Romance Without Regret will hand you the tools you need in order to
Chariots of Fire
ased on a true story, Chariots of Fire is the internationally acclaimed
BOscar-winning drama for Best Picture of two very different men
who compete as runners in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell (Ian
Charleson), a serious Christian Scotsman, believes that he has to succeed
as a testament to his undying religious faith. Harold Abrahams
(Ben Cross), is a Jewish Englishman who wants desperately to be
accepted and prove to the world that Jews are not inferior. The film
crosscuts between each man’s life as he trains for the competition,
fueled by these very different desires. Thrilling and compelling as the
racing scenes are, it’s really the depth of the two main characters that
touches the viewer, as they forcefully drive home the theme that victory
attained through devotion, commitment, integrity, and sacrifice
is the most admirable feat that one can achieve.
This is the compelling story of Polish Catholic social worker, Irena Sendler, one
of the most remarkable, and unlikely, heroes of World War II, saving 2,500 Jewish
children during the Nazi occupation of Poland. She led a group of compatriots
Heart of the Word • vol. iii
Meditations on the Gospel
According to Saint Matthew
Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis
To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew’s gospel can
seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document
and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal)
storehouse that it is. In his third volume of
meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo
Leiva continues to show Matthew’s prose to be not
terse so much as economical-astoundingly so given
its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit
from reading this. Each short meditation comments
on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text
not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning.
Leiva’s work is scholarly but eminently
approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very
much of “taste and see how good the Lord is” and
an invitation of “friend, come up higher!”. The goal
of the book is to help the reader experience the heat
of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word.
Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating
nuances in the text that defy translation. He
uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the
Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the
Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His
theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking
its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.
“This is a biblical commentary with scholarship
and, above all, a prayerfulness that is a great gift
to the Church. ” — Sr. Wendy Beckett, OCD
Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis, Ph.D., was formerly a
Professor of Literature and Theology at the University
of San Francisco. Now a Trappist monk, he is
the author of Vols. 1 & 2 of Fire of Mercy, plus The
A Sense of the Sacred
Roman Catholic Worship
in the Middle Ages
James Monti
This incomparable volume presents a comprehensive
exploration and explanation of medieval
liturgical celebrations. The reverent prayers,
hymns and rubrics used in the Middle Ages are
described in detail and interpreted through the
commentary of scholars from the same time period,
the era which is also known as the “Age of Faith”.
Collected here is a wide range of ceremonies,
encompassing the seven sacraments, the major
feasts of the liturgical year (such as Christmas,
Easter, and Corpus Christi), and special liturgical
rites (from the coronation of the pope to the blessing
of expectant mothers). The sacred celebrations
have been drawn from countries across western
and central Europe—from Portugal to Poland—but
particular attention has been given to liturgical
texts of medieval Spain, which until now have
received relatively little attention from scholars.
Historian James Monti has done exhaustive
research on medieval liturgical manuscripts, early
printed missals, and the writings of medieval liturgists
and theologians so that the treasures they
contain can inspire a sense of the sacred in future
generations of Catholics.
“James Monti’s treatise is an astonishing
achievement, a book that can and will shape a
new generation of intellectuals who are serious
about the Catholic liturgy. Despite the title, this
book is not only about medieval liturgy. It’s
about inspiring the creation of, and the provision
of access to, truly sacred spaces in our time, even
in a world that seems so barren of them.”
Jeffrey Tucker, Managing Editor, Sacred Music
James Monti is an author and historian who has
contributed numerous articles to Catholic publications,
including the monthly missal Magnificat. His
other books include The King’s Good Servant But
God’s First: The Life & Writings of St. Thomas More,
The Week of Salvation and In the Presence of Our Lord.
Contemplative Provocations
Father Donald Haggerty
great many religious people undertake, at least
A for a time, a serious dedication to prayer. They
are moved by a longing for a deeper encounter
with God, and the possibility of this beckons them
as a distant light at night on the sea. Yet far fewer
in number become true contemplative souls, for it
is difficult to continue the quest for God in the face
of many obstacles.
For those who are spiritually courageous and
full of desire for God, this book cannot but provoke
them to begin or to persevere in this ultimate
adventure in life—the more complete discovery
of the living God. Thematically unified by the
notion of God’s ultimate transcendence to our limited
human knowledge, Contemplative Provocations
offers a rich profusion of insights on the life of
prayer and the pursuit of God.
A key to spiritual growth is the understanding
that the hiddenness of God becomes a paradox in
the experience of a soul seeking him wholeheartedly.
Rather than enjoying a more intimate familiarity
with God, the soul advancing in prayer is likely
to experience more intensely, more provocatively,
the concealment of God. This surprising truth
undergirds true contemplative prayer. It is a reason
why every contemplative soul, and every saint, is
inflamed with a never satisfied thirst for God.
“This is a masterful work. It contains a tremendous
amount of very helpful spiritual advice.”
Fr. Joseph Koterski, S.J., Fordham University
“The work has the feel and style of a spiritual
classic, and I hope it will be recognized as one.”
Fr. John J. Coughlin, O.F.M.,
How NOT to Share Your Faith
The Seven Deadly Sins of Catholic
Apologetics and Evangelization
Mark Brumley
Catholic apologetics is bigger than ever. It’s
everywhere. As a professional apologist, Mark
Brumley sees this renaissance as an immensely
good thing—an essential part of the Church’s evangelical
mission.
But often times untrained apologists can undermine
arguments for the faith and drive people
farther away from the truth.
In How NOT to Share Your Faith: The Seven
Deadly Sins of Catholic Apologetics and Evangelization,
Brumley describes seven of the most common and
tragic mistakes he and other apologists have made
over the years in their attempts to defend and
explain the Catholic faith.
More importantly, he reveals how you can avoid
these mistakes and become far more effective at
sharing your faith in a charitable way—even if that
means losing an argument from time to time.
“Mark Brumley is articulate, persuasive,
balanced and sensible, and the spirit he brings
to this marvelously readable, useful work
demonstrates Catholic apologetics at its best.”
Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.,
Archbishop of Philadelphia
“This book should be required reading for all
amateur and professional Catholic apologists. It
is genuinely useful and totally trustworthy.”
Peter Kreeft,
author, Handbook of Catholic Apologetics
Mark Brumley, a convert to Catholicism, has
taught and lectured about the faith in a wide range
of forums, including as an adjunct professor for the
Institute for Pastoral Theology of Ave Maria University.
My Sisters, the Saints
A Spiritual Memoir
Colleen Carroll Campbell
opular author, syndicated columnist, blogger and TV host
PCampbell blends her own moving personal narrative of spiritual
seeking, trials, stumbles, and breakthroughs with the stories
of six women saints who profoundly changed her life: Teresa
of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, Faustina of Poland, Edith Stein of
Germany, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Mary of Nazareth.
Drawing upon the rich writings and examples of these extraordinary
women, the author reveals Christianity’s liberating power
for women and the deep relevance of the saints to the lives of
contemporary Christians.
“Completely contemporary and totally timeless, this is an
What is Marriage Man and Woman: A Defense
Robert George, Sherif Girgis, Ryan Anderson
Until today, no society had seen marriage as anything other
than a conjugal partnership: a male-female union. What Is
Marriage identifies and defends the reasons for this historic consensus
and shows why redefining civil marriage is unnecessary,
unreasonable, and contrary to the common good.
This book’s core argument has already been cited and debated
by scholars and activists throughout the world as the most
formidable defense of the tradition ever written. It stands
poised to meet its moment as few books of this generation
have. Rhodes Scholar Sherif Girgis, Heritage Foundation Fellow
Ryan Anderson, and Princeton Professor Robert George offer a
devastating critique of the idea that equality requires redefining
marriage. They show why both sides must first answer the question
of what marriage really is. They defend the principle that
marriage, as a comprehensive union of mind and body ordered to
family life, unites a man and a woman as husband and wife, and
they document the social value of applying this principle in law.
Most compellingly, they show that those who embrace same-sex
civil marriage leave no firm ground—none—for not recognizing
every relationship describable in polite English, including polyamorous
sexual unions, and that enshrining their view would further
erode the norms of marriage, and hence the common good.
Saint Barbara
Convert & Martyr of the Early Church
In 303 A.D., Barbara is the beautiful, twenty-yearold
daughter of Dioscoro, the Roman governor
during a time of fierce Christian persecution. Barbara
is a pagan, but when Giuliana, a slave raised alongside
her almost like a sister, is condemned to death
for her Christian faith, Barbara rebels.
She valiantly attempts to save Giuliana, as well as
other Christians being persecuted, boldly protesting
to her father and other government leaders. When
that fails, Barbara makes a daring plan for the successful
escape from prison of her Christian friends.
Saint Barbara is also the story of her profound
love for Claudio, the noble Roman soldier whose
life she saves, as well as her deep compassion for all
afflicted humanity. The courageous and holy witness
of her Christian friends inspires her to convert
to their religion, a decision which will eventually
cost Barbara her life.
Before her death, Barbara discovers she has journeyed
down the same path as her mother, who was
taken from her as a child for having made the same
choice, to become a Christian, which had never been
told to Barbara as she was growing up.
Barbara is the victim of many acts of cruelty in
the last period of her life. The serenity with which
she overcomes such barbarity can only be attributed
to her new faith in Christ, which gives her the
strength necessary to face the most difficult trials
and to forgive her persecutors.
Set in the Empire Studios, reproducing ancient
Rome, Saint Barbara recreates authentic atmosphere
and a realistic sense of the the time period, mingling
historical and some fictional characters.
includes three separate films.
The Secret of Bernadette
An exploration into the apparitions of Our Lady of
Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, as well as
into the character and holiness of St. Bernadette, the
secret of what made her such a great saint, and the
incredible reality of her beautiful, incorrupt body
130 years after her death. Includes glorious footage
and photography of Lourdes, and Nevers where
Bernadette lived as a nun in the order of the Sisters
of Charity. This film also reveals the little-known
and amazing link between the visions of Lourdes
and of St. Catherine Laboure, and the Shrine of the
Miraculous Medal in Paris where St. Catherine had
her apparitions.
The Pope of Mercy
Tells the story of the deep relationship between Pope
John Paul II and St. Faustina Kowalska, the Polish
nun whose visions in the early 20th century were the
origin of the incredible worldwide diffusion of the
Divine Mercy devotion. The Pope and the nun never
met in person, and yet their stories are so profoundly
intertwined that they significantly marked the entire
pontificate of Karol Wojtyla, who established the
feast of Divine Mercy and died on the eve of that
feast in 2005.
Padre Pro
Blessed Miguel Pro: Martyr of Mexico
This movie is the inspiring story of the famous Father Miguel
Pro, S.J., who was executed in Mexico in 1927 for the crime of
being a Catholic priest. This young Jesuit spent most of his
short life in the priesthood dodging the Mexican police as he
ministered to the underground Church during the Mexican
Revolution. Fr. Pro’s quick wit and keen sense of humor
were put to good use as he pedaled around Mexico City on
his bicycle in various disguises, en route to administering
the Sacraments, giving spiritual talks or begging food and
money for the poor. But behind the disguises beat the heart
of a saint—as the Mexican people testified by turning out in
throngs to pay their last respects after his martyrdom. Fr. Pro
offered his life for the Catholic Faith and his last words on this
earth were: “Viva Cristo Rey”—Long live Christ the King!
This powerful movie makes history come alive and highlights
the dramatic conflict between the Church and her
enemies that continues even to this day. An inspiring film for
the whole family, this is an incredible true story of a modern
Catholic hero who proclaimed both in life and death the reign
of Christ the King. In Spanish with English subtitles.
on Graham Greene’s novel The Power and the Glory, the story
follows a priest (Fonda) in Latin America pursued by a ruthless
police lieutenant carrying out the dictates of an oppressive,
anti-clerical government. There’s another fugitive as
well: an American killer on the run—and the paths of the
two hunted men cross with fateful consequences. A haunting
Hostia The Power and Presence of the Eucharist
This powerful and inspiring film begins with the Gospel accounts of how Jesus
Christ instituted the Eucharist. It explains how the sacrifices and offerings in the
Old Testament prefigured the perfect and final sacrifice in Jesus Christ Himself—
the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The constant belief of
Christians in the Real Presence throughout history is clearly demonstrated along
with examples of heroic witnesses for the faith. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
is explained as the center of the Christian life where Jesus becomes truly present
in the Eucharist. The practices of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction are
presented as the real power behind any evangelization and essential to reviving
faith in every Catholic parish. Featuring Fr. Nicholas Schofield, Fr. Tim Finigan,
a handbook for retreats called
the Spiritual Exercises. These
"exercises for the soul" lead
the follower of Christ into
the freedom to know and do
the will of God. Under the
guidance of Fr. Raymond
Gawronski, S.J., the viewers
of this 13 part series from EWTN can make the actual
Ignatian retreat. Includes a study guide.
