It is important to draw up bolting to full torque in even and gradual steps. Do not allow the valve cap to be tightened with bias on one cap screw or to become cocked in the bore. Such bias or cocking can cause uneven crush of a wire gasket that could cause a leak, and could also cause cap screw failure. This step tightening procedure is also necessary for all valve caps. Install the valve assembly (and high clearance spacer, when applicable), with the preformed gasket and valve retainer, in the valve pocket. See “Valves - Reassembly” on Page 5-57 Lubricate and install a new o-ring, or for high pressure applications place a new, proper, soft metallic wire gasket on the retainer or cap and install the valve cap. Be careful not to gouge the bore, distort or damage the metallic wire gasket. FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE Lubricate cap screw threads and seating surfaces with petroleum type lubricant, and install cap screws. Do not use anti-seize compounds on valve cap bolting. Tighten each cap screw until snug using an alternating (criss-cross) pattern. Next, tighten each cap screw to 25% of full torque, moving across from cap screw to cap screw, in an alternating (criss-cross) pattern. See Figure 5-49 1-2-3-4-5-6. Repeat this step for 50%, 75% and 100% of full torque. If the assembly is correct, the distance from the underside of the cap to the valve boss surface on the cylinder will be a uniform 1/8 inches (3 mm) nominal gap. For high pressure cylinders that use a soft metallic wire gasket in lieu of the o-ring design, continue to repeat the 100% full torque step until the cap screws no longer rotate, to properly deform the wire gasket. High pressure applications have caution plates on the cylinders. These plates are stamped with proper valve cap bolting torque values: !
