FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE
When “WAT” rings are used in tail rod applications, the pressure side is the outboard side,
due to the air compressing-blowing action with the tail rod catcher. In this case, the match
mark letters for “WAT” rings only are to be positioned away from the cylinder.
Type “AL” Double Acting Seal Set
This set is made up of five rings which function like a double ended “WAT” design ring set.
The total end gap installed is 9/32 to 5/16 in. (7 to 8 mm) for Teflon. The end gap should be
maintained by replacing the ring. It is meant to be used in a groove into which low-pressure
fluid is supplied which serves to totally block leakage. “AL” rings must be centered when
installed in the packing case. See Figure 5-37.
This set is made up of three rings. It seals in one direction only. The first ring (pressure side)
is radially cut. The second ring is a tangentially step cut ring. The first two rings are doweled
so the end gaps are staggered. The total end gap installed is 17/32 to 9/16 in. (13 to 14 mm)
for PEEK, Bronze & Cast Iron, and 9/32 to 5/16 in. (7 to 8 mm) for Teflon. The end gap
should be maintained by replacing the ring. The third ring is called a back-up ring and is
uncut (solid). The bore in the back-up ring is larger than the rod diameter. See Figure 5-38.
