FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE Type "UP" Pressure Breaker This is a single solid ring. This ring breaks down or slows the gas flow without sealing it completely. See Figure 5-32. Type “P1U” Pressure Breaker This set is made up of two rings. It allows controlled leakage in one direction only, and is installed in the first or second packing cup (closest to the piston). The first ring (pressure side) is one-piece with a single radial cut. The second ring is uncut (solid). The bore in the second ring is larger than the rod diameter. See Figure 5-33. Total End Gap - Installed: 0.058 to 0.064” (1.5 / to 1.7 mm) for PEEK 0.029 to 0.035” (0.7 to 0.9 mm) for Bronze & Cast Iron End gap should be maintained by replacing the ring. It seals in one direction only. The first ring (pressure side) is radially cut. The second ring is a tangentially step cut ring and is made of the same material as the first ring. The first two rings are doweled so the end gaps are staggered. The total end gap installed is 17/32 to 9/16 in. (13 to 14 mm) for PEEK, Bronze & Cast Iron, and 9/32 to 5/16 in. (7 to 8 mm) for Teflon. The end gap should be maintained by replacing the ring. The third ring is called a back-up ring and is radially cut. The bore in the backup ring is larger than the rod diameter which allows its radial joints to fit tight together. No dowel is necessary for this ring. See Figure 5-34. 7/09 PAGE 5 - 47

The rings are doweled so the tangential cuts are staggered from one ring to the other. The total end gap installed is 17/32 to 9/16 in. (13 to 14 mm) for PEEK, Bronze & Cast Iron, and 9/32 to 5/16 in. (7 to 8 mm) for Teflon. The end gap should be maintained by replacing the ring. The set is double acting in that it will seal in either direction. It is used in cylinders operating near atmospheric pressure to prevent air from entering the cylinder. It is also used in higher pressure packing cases in the vent cup(s). Install with the match mark letters facing the pressure. See Figure 5-35. The first two rings (pressure side) are radially cut. The third ring is a tangentially step cut ring. The last two rings are doweled so the end gaps are staggered. The total end gap installed is 9/32 to 5/16 in. (7 to 8 mm). The end gap should be maintained by replacing the ring. The first ring, along with the center ring, forms a wedge that overcomes rod friction and holds the ring set against both groove faces during either direction of rod travel. This ring set is intended primarily for low pressure application. Install with the match mark letters facing the pressure. “WAT” rings must be centered when installed in the packing case.
