FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE
and rod collar locating bands, and collar face in contact with the piston, then
slide collar onto rod.
6. Apply a thin coating of “Never-Seez”, Regular Grade to piston rod threads at the
piston end, then slide piston in place onto rod and collar. For two-piece pistons,
install a new o-ring between the piston halves.
NOTE: ONE END OF SINGLE PIECE PISTONS IS MACHINED 0.002 INCHES (0.05 mm)
UNDERSIZE ACROSS A 3/4 INCH (20 mm) WIDE BAND FOR MANUFACTUR-
ING PURPOSES. IF THE PISTON IS SYMMETRICAL AND CAN BE INSTALLED
IN EITHER DIRECTION, ASSEMBLE WITH THE UNDERSIZE BAND TOWARD
THE HEAD END.
7. Apply a thin coating of “Never-Seez”, Regular Grade to the piston nut threads
and piston mating face. Install nut and hand tighten.
8. Put the separately purchased torquing tool in place, with the two dowel drive
pins placed into the holes in the piston rod nut (see Figure 5-26 on Page 5-39).
Turn the tool-puller-bolt into the threaded hole in the end for the piston rod.
Tighten the puller-bolt by hand until torquing tool is tight against the piston rod
assembly.
CAUTION! TIGHTEN A MINIMUM OF 14 TURNS TO PREVENT PISTON ROD TO
PULLER-BOLT THREAD FAILURE. SUCH FAILURES CAN RESULT IN PER-
SONAL INJURY. TOOL MUST BE PROPERLY CONFIGURED.
9. Then back off the tool puller-bolt 1/4 turn. Note that the puller-bolt is provided
with a hex drive, to assist in tightening or loosening the puller-bolt, if necessary.
A hydraulic pressure of 8,700 psig (600 barg ) is to be applied to the torquing tool
to stretch the piston rod. A separately purchased hand pump is recommended.
Then 30 lb-ft (41 N·m) of torque is to be applied to the 5/8 inch hex pinion gear
drive. The hydraulic pressure is then released. Re-apply hydraulic pressure and
completely loosen piston nut without disassembling and release hydraulic pressure;
repeat the tensioning/tightening procedure. Repeating the procedure to be
sure that the components are seated properly. The G-12644 torquing tool is also
used and pressurized to disassemble a piston and rod.
!
CAUTION
DO NOT OVERPRESSURE THE HYDRAULIC TORQUING
TOOL. OVERPRESSURE CAN CAUSE THE TORQUING TOOL
TO FAIL AND/OR RESULT IN EXCESSIVE PRE-LOAD OF THE
PISTON ROD. PISTON ROD FAILURE CAN OCCUR DUE TO
EXCESSIVE PRE-LOAD. SUCH FAILURES CAN RESULT IN
PERSONAL INJURY.
