FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE
kets flush to the top of the base with a knife.
8. Reinstall the chain drives. (See “Chain Drive System” on Page 5-29). Be sure that the
chain oiling system is properly installed.
9. Refill crankcase with oil. Thoroughly pre-lube compressor to be sure that bearings are
lubricated and to help remove foreign materials from the lube system. Visually inspect for
oil flow at all bearing locations.
10.Reinstall all spacer bars. Be sure that spacer bar o-rings in frame and crosshead guide
are in place and in good condition, replace if necessary. Locate the match mark on the
spacer bar. Install the spacer bar so that the match mark is up and next to the spacer bar
boss with the same marking. Utilize the Top-Cover Spacer Bar Alignment Tools (A-
11987), see Figure 7-4 on Page 7-3. The top-cover spacer bars are used as gasket surfaces
to top covers. Tighten all spacer-bar cap screws to value in Table 1-11 on Page 1-
18.
11. Check bearing jack and thrust clearances, see “Checking Main Bearing Clearances” on
Page 5-17 and “Checking Connecting Rod (Crank Pin) Bearing Clearances” on Page 5-
3. Record values on a copy of the form on page 5-68.
12.Account for all tools, measuring and lifting equipment, supplies, replaced parts, etc. to be
sure they have all been removed from inside the crankcase.
13.Inspect top cover gaskets. If there is any doubt that they are not in a good usable condition,
install new gaskets. Before installing a gasket, apply a thin coating of anti-seize
lubricant to both sides or to the metal seating surfaces. This will help to hold the gasket in
place during assembly and aid in ease of future removal. Reinstall the top covers and
tighten bolting hand wrench tight.
14.Reinstall the coupling hub and center member to the coupling manufacturer’s instructions.
15.When replacing any bearings and/or connecting rod(s) it is important to check the bearing
break-in temperatures. When starting the compressor after the first 10 minutes of run
time, after one hour and after 4 hours, shutdown compressor and remove the frame top
covers. Immediately (within 5 minutes after shutdown), check the bearing cap temperatures
using a temperature probe (hand held thermocouple probe or infrared thermometer),
record on a copy of form on page 5-68. If a variation more than 8°F (4.5°C) is
measured between any two main or any two connecting rod bearings, contact Ariel.
CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE ANY PART OF YOUR BODY INSIDE THE CRANKCASE
WITHOUT OBSERVING THE CAUTION ON PAGE 5-1.
16.Complete remaining information on the copy of the form on page 5-68 and fax the copy
to Ariel Technical Services.
Torsional Vibration Detuners - Installation on Crankshaft
Torsional vibration in reciprocating compressors is a critical consideration. In a given application
to avoid resonance that can occur at the natural frequencies of the system, the drive
train may require tuning as determined by a qualified torsional vibration analysis provider
working closely with the packager, driver manufacturer, and Ariel.
Depending on the torsional vibration analysis (TVA) results, the compressor may be
equipped with or require the addition of torsional vibration detuners (donuts) on the compressor
crankshaft. Detuner donuts are sized specifically for the compressor and applica-
