5. Measure the crankshaft thrust clearance as follows:
a. Install a magnetic base on the top of #1 main bearing cap, with a button type
dial indicator placed against the side of the adjacent crankshaft web as
shown in Figure 5-12 on Page 5-19.
b. Use a large pry bar against the compressor frame and thrust the crankshaft
tight toward the dial indicator. Release pressure on the pry bar. Manually
rotate the crankshaft just slightly to break oil adhesion, then turn the
crankshaft back to the original position. Set the dial indicator to zero. Then
pry the crankshaft to thrust in the opposite direction tight and release
pressure. manually rotate the crankshaft just slightly, then turn back to the
original position to determine thrust clearance. Repeat to be sure that
reading is accurate. Note that crankshaft thrust clearance can also be
checked externally without removing the top covers.
c. If thrust clearance is out of limits, replace thrust plates and bearing shells at
the #1 main bearing cap.
6. After installing new bearings, check jack and thrust clearances against the clearance
limits. See Table 1-4 on Page 1-13. If clearances are outside of limits, contact
your packager or Ariel. Record readings on a copy of the form on
page 5-68.
