FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE 14. Remove the oil wiper gland from the crosshead guide. Install the Crosshead Installation/Removal Spindle Tool (reference Figure 7-1 on Page 7-2) on the crosshead guide in place of the oil wiper gland with the (6) 1/4 in. - 20 x 1 in. long, hex cap screws provided in the Ariel tool box, hand wrench tight. Lubricate the spindle bearing surfaces with new clean lubricating oil, same type as is used in the frame. 15. Push the crosshead onto the crosshead installation/removal spindle tool, and rotate the crosshead 90 degrees. 16. Install the Roll-in Support Table Assembly (G-11847) in the gap between the crosshead and the crosshead guide, using the crosshead cover bolting, hand wrench tight, (as shown in Figure 5-8 on Page 5-15). Install a punch in the hole at the back of the support table to serve as a stop and hold the table in place when removing the crosshead. 17. Slide the crosshead off of the installation/removal spindle, onto the support table. Remove the installation/removal spindle tool. Slide the crosshead out of the crosshead guide on the support table to remove it. 18. Check the crosshead pin to bushing clearance, see Table 1-4 on Page 1-13. Wear on the pin can be determined by a visual inspection. Replace the pin if necessary. If replacement tri-metal (steel-bronze-babbitt with tin flash) bushings are needed, hacksaw or file them to within 1/32 inches (1 mm) of their thickness. When they can be easily drifted out. Be careful, not to file or saw into the crosshead, as any bore damage makes the crosshead unusable. 19. A hydraulic press in a qualified machine shop will be needed to install new bushings. See Figure 5-6 on Page 5-12. Bushing part number B-3462 can only be used with the D-3486, D-3513, D-3796 and D-4120 crossheads. Bushing part number B-4567 may be used with Babbitted-shoe iron crossheads. Except B-4889 bushings for externally lubricated crosshead pins which are supplied with oil holes (and oil groove), must be installed so the round oil holes in the crosshead are aligned with the bushing’s oval oil holes. See Figure 5-7 on Page 5-12. Bushings are to be installed in the crosshead by cooling the bushings in a 95% alcohol with dry ice solution. The bushings need to be left in the solution long enough to reach the same temperature as the solution, about -110°F (-80°C). Check the crosshead pin to bushings clearance after replacing bushings and/or pin, see Table 1-4 on Page 1-13. CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH COLD SURFACES WITHOUT PROPER INSULATION TO PREVENT INJURY. ALCOHOL IS FLAMMABLE AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED IN OPEN AIR OR A WELL VENTILATED BUILDING. AVOID SPARKS AND OPEN FLAME. AVOID ALCOHOL VAPORS WHICH MAY CAUSE INJURY TO THE TISSUES OF THE NOSE AND EYES. DO NOT RETURN SOLUTION TO A CLOSED CONTAINER UNTIL IT HAS REACHED ROOM TEMPERATURE OR THE CONTAINER MAY EXPLODE. NOTE: THE SIDE OF THE CROSSHEAD RECEIVING THE NEW BUSHING SHOULD BE SUPPORTED DIRECTLY TO PREVENT POSSIBLE CRUSHING OF THE CROSSHEAD BY THE PRESS. (SEE FIGURE 5-6 ON PAGE 5-12). ABSOLUTE CLEANLINESS IS REQUIRED OF BOTH BUSHING AND CROSS- HEAD TO PREVENT DIRT FROM ACCUMULATING BETWEEN THE BUSHING AND CROSSHEAD BORE. 20. Visually inspect the shoe surfaces for scoring. Since they are constantly lubricated under pressure during operation, there should be virtually no wear. 7/09 PAGE 5 - 11

USE FRAME OIL FOR LUBRICATION WHERE NEEDED. 1. With the crank pin and connecting rod at near to inner dead center position and Roll-in Support Table Assembly (G-11847) installed in the bottom of the crosshead guide, lay the crosshead on its side onto the table. Lubricate crosshead and guide bearing surfaces with new clean lubricating oil, same type as is used in the frame, and slide the crosshead into the guide. 2. Install the Crosshead Installation/Removal Spindle Tool in the crosshead guide at the oil wiper gland location and lubricate tool bearing surfaces with new clean lubricating oil, same type as is used in the frame. Slide the crosshead onto the spindle tool. PAGE 5 - 12 7/09
