FOR MODELS: JGZ AND JGU SECTION 5 - MAINTENANCE
Tighten Connecting Rod Bolting to
the Torque and Turn Values in Table
1-11 on Page 1-18. The additional
degrees turn is achieved using the
separately purchased hydraulic
connecting rod/main bearing-caps
cap screw torque turn tool, see Figure
7-12 on Page 7-7.
11. Reinstall the top-cover spacer bars. Be sure that spacer bar o-rings in the crosshead
guide under the cap screw heads are in place and in good condition,
replace if necessary. All spacer bars are match-marked for proper location. They
must be reinstalled in their original location. Utilize Top-Cover Spacer Bar Alignment
Tools (A-11987). These spacer bars are also used as gasket surfaces to
top covers. See Figure 7-4 on Page 7-3. Lubricate cap screws with lubricating oil
or Lubriplate 630. Install and tighten all spacer bar cap screws to the value listed
in Table 1-11 on Page 1-18.
12. Examine the top cover and side cover gaskets. Install new gaskets if there is any
doubt that old gaskets are not in a good usable condition. Top cover gaskets are
to be replaced as a complete set, as used and new gasket pieces installed side
by side under the same top cover can cause oil leaks. Before installing a gasket,
apply a thin coating of anti-seize lubricant to both sides or to the metal seating
surfaces. This will help to hold the gasket in place during assembly and aid in
ease of removal. Reinstall the top covers and crosshead guide covers. Tighten
all cover cap screws hand-wrench tight.
13. After replacing bearings or connecting rod it is important to check the bearing
break-in temperatures. When starting the compressor after the first 10 minutes
of run time, after one hour and after 4 hours, shutdown compressor and remove
the frame top covers. Immediately (within 5 minutes after shutdown), check the
bearing cap temperatures using a temperature probe (hand held thermocouple
probe or infrared thermometer), record values on a copy of form on page 5-68. If
a variation more than 8°F (4.5°C) is measured between any two connecting rod
bearings, contact Ariel.
CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE ANY PART OF YOUR BODY INSIDE THE CRANKCASE
WITHOUT OBSERVING THE CAUTION ON PAGE 5-1.
14. Complete remaining information on the copy of “BEARING LOG FORM/CONDI-
TIONS AFTER REPLACING BEARINGS” on Page 5-68” and fax copy to Ariel
