Professor Tin
Welcome Sammy Tin
Professor Tin will be joining the MMAE Department in January 2006. Prior to joining the
faculty at IIT, he served as the Deputy Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology
Partnership at the University of Cambridge, UK where he led an active group of graduate
students and post-doctoral researchers working on a range of projects relating to processing
and deformation of high-temperature structural materials. Professor Tin received his
PhD in Materials Science and Metallurgy from the University of Michigan in 2001.
the Bo ei ng 787 Dream li ner and the A irbus A 380 Sup erj u mb o. One of the main factors contr ibuti ng to the
str uctu ral mat er ials utilized within the tu rbi ne section of the engi ne. Str uctu ral comp onents used in the
tu rbi ne are requ ired to sustain substantial loads wh ile bei ng exposed to high ly cor ro sive atmo spheres and
Lukongwa Wins NSBE Model
Airplane Design Competition
T wenty universities par ticipated in the NSBE Model A ir plane De sig n
Competition with the IIT team of Tonny Lukongwa (MMAE 2005 graduate—
South Africa) and Wadzanayi Maketiwa (ECE 2005 graduate—Zimbabwe)
garnering the $1600 first prize award by setting a new gliding record of 170' 3".
The previous record of 169' 9" was held by the University of Miami (2004). The competition, sponsored
by the Boeing Company, has the objective of designing the farthest flying glider as measured from
launch pad to landing. Specifications included balsa wood (one 36" x 3" x 1/2" sheet), glue, and a payload
of two US quarters. Congratulations!
MMAE Navigation & Guidance
Lab Wins Competition
In June 2005, the MMAE Navigation and Guidance Lab won
second place at the “Second Annual Autonomous Lawn Mower
Competition” in Dayton, Ohio. The competition was sponsored by the Satellite Division of the Institute
of Navigation. “Leonard,” Nav Lab’s autonomous lawnmower, used Carrier Phase Differential Global
Positioning System (CD GPS) as the primary sensor, which provided centimeter-level positioning accuracy.
The Nav Lab team, consiting of Mathieu Joerger and Samer Khanafseh (MMAE graduate
students) and led by Professor Boris Pervan, was beaten only by a very small margin by Ohio
University’s polished robot. Special thanks to Scott Bachmann, MMAE System Administrator, and
Craig Johnson and John Swartz, MMAE Machine Shop, for their help in preparing for the competition.
Materials Camp 2005
Since 2000, the ASM International Foundation has sponsored a program entitled
Materials Camp for high school students (Juniors and Seniors) who are considering
engineering as a profession. This free program, held at the MMAE
Department in 2005, introduces the students to Materials Science and Engineering by using a forensic
investigation of failed components as a vehicle to get hands-on experience using state-of-the-art
equipment (SEM, mechanical testing, finite element analysis, metallography, fractography and image
analysis). This successful program has continued to grow every year. The “ASM Materials Camp” is now
operating in 30 locations worldwide.
