Dear Members, 

It would be an understatement to say 2009 was a 

challenge for just about everyone. We, the leadership, 

of your retreat house were deeply concerned how the 

economic downtown would impact not only you, our 

members, but also on our overall operations. The board 

of directors, working together with staff, developed an 

aggressive plan at mid-year to offset the loss of income by 

curtailing expenses wherever possible. 

As chairman, I reached out 

to the Malvern community 

through a special autumn appeal 

and 610 new donations were 

received. Malvern’s senior staff 

and associates’ diligent efforts 

are also credited with helping us 

complete the year in the black and 

under budget. I want to express 

my sincere gratitude to all the 

benefactors and staff for their 

dedication to the Malvern retreat 

movement. 

In addition to your financial support, the most important 

thing you can do is continue to help us promote Malvern. 

Word-of-mouth, person- to- person recruitment has 

always been the most effective means of bringing new 

retreatants to Malvern; therefore I encourage you to 

continue talking about your retreat experience with 

family, friends and neighbors. As we look towards our 

100 year anniversary in 2012, I am confident we will 

continue to maintain our position as the number one 

retreat house in the county.

From the President 

Dear Retreatants: 

I trust that you and your family had a rewarding Lent and a joyous Easter. This traditional seasonal celebration reminds us of God’s love for all of us. In 

an article read at the Men of Malvern’s Saturday dinner a few years ago, we heard the words of Bill Matthews who wrote a special Valentine’s letter to his 

wife. He didn’t send it to her immediately; he died suddenly from a serious illness and never had the opportunity to read the letter. He wrote the letter on 

his retreat at Malvern after he finally realized that God loved him despite his human frailties. After this realization, he made another retreat and it was 

during this retreat that he comprehended God’s love for him. It was this holy place that empowered Bill to internalize God’s unconditional love. What a 

treasure we have here at Malvern and what a great post- Easter message for us to contemplate. 

In 2009, we hosted 21,340 retreatants through all of our many programs. We hosted 214 week, weekend, day and evening retreat programs. There were 

22 high school retreats and this was a record number for us. Our retreatant experience has been very good and the surveys we collected for the Men of 

Malvern indicated an overall satisfaction rate of 93%. 

Due to the generosity of our retreatants, we have continued to make capital improvements, while managing our limited resources wisely. With the 

assistance of John Harkins, we received barter points allowing us to purchase replacement carpet for Saint Joseph’s Chapel, library, lobby, the first 

floor in the residential area, the third (3rd) floor of Immaculate Conception and the lower level of McShain Conference Center. This has been a great 

opportunity for us to improve carpet conditions for health and safety reasons as well as aesthetics. A special thanks to John Harkins for his generosity. 

In the spring of 2009, we held a contest to attract first time donors for the Annual Appeal. Through the spring 

appeal we recruited 124 new donors. In the fall of 2009, we distributed a special appeal, from Frank Marx, 

our Chairman, to help us reduce an expected deficit. We received gifts from 610 new donors as well as second 

gifts from a number of traditional donors. While our participation rate for the Annual Appeal is low, around 

11%, this was a promising sign. Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice. As you know, Malvern receives no 

outside income from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia or any religious community so your annual contributions 

make a difference. 

Our goal of refurbishing our shrines and holy places made significant progress last year. We completed the 

lighting for the new stations at the McShain-Horstmann Family Life Center and added a shrine to the 

Guardian Angel, for individuals who have lost a child. The Pieta was beautifully restored by the Six-Three 

group and the Miraculous Medal Shrine was reconstructed by the Barrett Family, of the Most Blessed 

Sacrament Group. In 2010, the Grotto statue of the Blessed Mother and Bernadette and the lamb are 

scheduled to be restored due to the generosity of Leon Hutton and his family. Vincenzo and Patrick Gazzillo 

donated new monstrances for our oratories; Anthony and Laura Fiorenza donated a beautiful statue of Our 

Lady of Grace for the McShain-Horstmann Family Life Center. Anyone interested in restoring any of our 

shrines or holy places, please contact me. 

A number of individuals have contacted us to request membership in the Good Shepherd Club. This Club is 

for individuals who indicate they have left Malvern in their will, signed over an insurance policy, and initiated 

an annuity or other deferred gift. Please help Malvern by considering a legacy gift through your estate planning. 

We have professionals that can help you work with your financial advisor or lawyer. Please call Tom Harmaty

Finally, our Associates have developed a new program called Malvern Direct, which allows you to pay your free will offering or Annual Appeal gift

Thank you for all of your support in 2009. We look forward with great hope as we develop ways to secure our retreat ministry while serving the larger 

community beyond our local region. A check of our computer files indicate that in 2009 we had retreatants from all 50 states and eight (8) countries on 

five (5) continents. We have been blessed. Keep recruiting by bringing more souls to Christ through this Malvern experience. 

May you continue to live with the hope of the Easter season in your heart and mind. Please remember the words of Mother Theresa who offered this 

blessing for all of us: “ May the joy of our risen Lord be your strength in your work, your way to the Father, your light to guide you and your bread of life.”

When your boss hands you a pink slip or you read in the newspaper that your lifetime 

savings have been diminished, the world seems to grow dimmer by the moment. How 

would one wake up in the morning with a positive attitude believing life will get better 

someday? With a dose of prayer, instruction, a prayer-filled environment and tips for 

making changes in one’s life, two days for the unemployed were hosted in 2009. 

With the growing number of unemployed in the United States and region, the senior staff 

of the retreat house made the decision to host a special day for the unemployed twice in 

2009. The initial Day for the Unemployed was hosted in the McShain-Horstmann Family 

Life Center in May 2009; followed by a second day in the fall of 2009. Both days were well 

attended by men and women in the region including corporate executives, doctors, blue 

collar workers and office personnel. 

Professional recruiters and staffing companies, Kristin Kane, Kane Associates and Michael 

Cuff from Career Concepts, Joseph Pierzga and Frank Garafolo made presentations on the 

value of social networking, updating one’s resume and so much more. Mary Jane Hurley 

Brant, MS and Kathleen McCarthy brought the gift of hope to the participants; from the 

psychological and spiritual aspects of recovering from loss. A free breakfast and lunch 

were offered, as well as opportunities to exchange resumes. Most importantly, the retreat 

house provided an environment of prayer for the day. Due to the overwhelming success 

of these free days for the unemployed, the third Day for the Unemployed is scheduled for 

Friday, May 14th.

Letter from the Rector, Fr. Gregory Hickey 

How odd to advocate generosity in times of tight money, you say? But generosity 

flows from gratitude. It is the virtue of giving over as well as giving up. Not to be 

generous is to be petty, stingy, greedy, or egotistical. The widow and her two coins is 

an argument for generosity by example (Luke 21:1-4). In the spirit of the Psalmist, 

generosity asks, “How can I repay the Lord for all the good done to me?” (Ps. 116:12) 

As giving over, generosity makes a world 

of sense in our faith lives, in which we are 

called to be images of God’s self-giving love 

and to imitate Christ’s special tenderness 

toward those in need. Generosity in a time 

of financial crisis is countercultural in a world 

where self- interest trumps service. We 

cannot properly express ourselves as images 

of God or imitate Christ without being in 

relationship with others and sharing gifts 

for the sake of each person and the good 

of the community. Generosity is ready to 

make sacrifices, to adjust plans, and to try to 

work things out so that everyone wins. In 

this sense, generosity is the virtue of a good 

neighbor – self-sacrificing and interested in 

the welfare of others. 

This past year has seen the generosity of 

so many of you coming to support our wonderful retreat house and supporting so 

many of our new programs to sustain St. Joseph’s-in-the-Hills. As a former man of 

Malvern with the Peco/Good Shepherd Group, a priest making priesthood retreats, 

and now as the Rector of Malvern, I am proud and honored to be part of this great 

legacy of faith. The Hickey family has been well-represented here. My grandfather 

started here in 1923 and introduced my Dad to Malvern and then introduced me. 

We have been present on these holy grounds since that time. 

I am a contributor to the Annual Appeal and I thank you for being a contributor also 

and I invite and challenge all to support our mission by your prayers and financial 

support so we can continue in this sacred mission that has been entrusted to our care.

The Good Shepherd Club 

The Good Shepherd Club is a unique opportunity for retreatants to 

participate in a life-giving, eternal way. Specifically, by simply placing 

Malvern Retreat House in one’s estate as a beneficiary, the overall 

mission allows us to ‘bring more souls to Christ.” “To keep a lamp 

burning we have to keep putting oil in it,” shared the late Mother Teresa

Tree of Life 2009 

When Fr. Patrick Peyton, CSC made popular the adage, “The family 

that prays together, stays together,” he graced humanity with a call to 

action; that is, one of initiating prayer within the context of the home. 

Prayer has enormous potential for bonding families closer together. 

This is why an additional Tree of Life was initiated in 2008 for the 

McShain-Horstmann Family Life Center; to capture the need for 

family bonding and remembrance. In 2009, new leaves and boulders 

were also added to the original Tree of Life exhibited in the Myung 

Young Sim Song Pavilion providing benefactors to place a name or

Catie’s Story 

Michael Pascarella, Jr. has a hard time saying no! At 18 years old, someone asked him 

to come to the Malvern Retreat House for a Catholic weekend retreat. Mike said yes, 

and he has been going to Malvern ever since. In July of 2000, Mike was praying in 

the chapel at Malvern, and in prayer, God asked him to become a permanent deacon 

some day. Mike said yes, and 

Lord willing, he will be ordained 

in 2012. In 2002, the Rector of 

the Malvern Retreat House, Fr. 

Dennis O’Donnell asked Mike 

if he would coordinate a family 

retreat in the new Family Life 

Center.. Mike said yes, and next 

October will mark his 8th annual 

family retreat. In June of 2008, 

Kevin O’Brien, the father of one 

of the retreat families, contacted 

Mike and asked him to start a 

prayer chain for his seven-year old 

daughter, Catie, who had just been 

diagnosed with brain cancer. Mike said yes, and started an email group that grew to 

over 250 people. A month after Catie died, the O’Brien’s asked Mike if he would chair 

one of the first fundraisers for the Catie’s Wish Foundation. Mike said yes, and so far, 

he has chaired three such events. In July of 2009, Kevin and Christine O’Brien asked 

Mike to serve as a member of the Board of Advisors to the Catie’s Wish Foundation, 

and Mike, with a giant smile on his face, said yes once again. 

All of the “yes” responses that Mike gave over the last 32 years were in response to a call to 

serve...made through human lips, but inspired by a loving God, who accomplishes His divine will on Earth through each and every one of us. But the 

biggest “yes” in Mike’s life did not come from him. It came from a little girl who knew that she was dying from cancer...a little girl who didn’t just accept 

her cross, she embraced it. And in doing so, Catie O’Brien was lifted up with Christ onto the Cross, so she could share in His resurrection. By her 

example, she made Mike’s “yes” a very easy word to say. 

It took nearly a generation for Mike and the O’Brien family to come together after that initial “yes” to God’s call. And, it may take three times as long for 

“Catie’s Wish” to be realized with a lot of hard work, and many hours of prayer. But as Mike told Kevin and Christine, “It isn’t work when you do it out of 

love.” This is the invitation of all men and women of Malvern Retreat House; one of saying “yes” to the present moment.

21 st Annual Golf Outing 

Expands 

Two outstanding Golf Outings were sponsored in 2009 for 

the retreat house. In May, the First Annual Malvern Retreat 

Golf Classic was held at RiverCrest Golf Club and Preserve in 

Phoenixville, PA. Known as one of the most challenging courses 

in the area, RiverCrest lived up to its reputation providing all 

the participants with a great day on the links. Over $9,000 was 

realized for this event, which is now rescheduled for May 18, 

2010. 

With blustery winds and chilly fall weather, the Annual Dr. 

Don Gallagher Memorial Golf Outing was, once again, hosted 

at Westover Country Club in Jeffersonville, PA on October 7 th . 

Despite the high winds the field of 80 golfers enjoyed a windy day 

on the course. This year’s tournament raised over $10,000. Please 

be sure to mark your calendar for September 22 nd for the next fall 

golf outing.

Dear Members: 

One year! So much has happened here at St. Joseph’s-in-the-Hills since 

I joined the staff just over a year ago. Last year I spoke about building a 

strong foundation and I am happy to report that you helped lay the ground 

work which will enable Malvern to grow with continued success. 

Specifically, how did you help Malvern grow in 2009? 

• Membership... 2,270 of you supported the annual membership drive and 

six retreatants became lifetime members. 

• Annual Appeal... 2,281 donors raised over $306,000 for the Annual 

Fund. More than 100 of these donors were first time givers and 125 people 

made larger gifts this year than they had in 2008. 

• The Good Shepherd Club... recognizes those retreatants that have been 

generous enough to leave Malvern in their will. In 2009 Malvern received 

more than $30,000 from five deceased members of the Malvern family. Six 

retreatants in total became members of the Club this year by recognizing 

Malvern in their wills. 

• Memorial Gifts and Naming Opportunities... With the dedication of 

the Guardian Angel Shrine; the renovation of the Pieta and our first ever 

Blessing Tree Ceremony Malvern was blessed to have many of you honor 

and memorialize your loved ones this year. Our grounds continue to 

become more beautiful each year and 2009 was no exception. 

Last year was a hard year for many and Malvern recognized how difficult it 

was by hosting two free Unemployment Days. These days were designed 

to aide the community by making them realize that they aren’t alone in 

these hard times as well as provide some useful knowledge to them in 

their search for employment. After each of these days we were blessed to 

receive two gifts both 

given anonymously and 

without solicitation to 

help the retreat house 

defray the costs incurred. 

The value of these gifts 

is insignificant since 

the generosity of these 

gifts affirmed our spirit 

of giving through our 

ongoing mission. Malvern 

is a place that fosters hope;

• The greatest accomplishment for me this year was my recovery through prayer, physical therapy, and perseverance to return to my role as Rector of 

Malvern Retreat House 

• The Spiritual Programs’ Committee partnered with OYYA to bring about Adoremus Te II 

• We increased new retreat directors by (5) for 2009 and (2) for the Family Retreats. 

• Coordinated the dedication of Guardian Angel Statue 

• Directed Retreats for Priests will start in 2010. 

• Successfully scheduled Saturday afternoon programs 

• Executed booklets and the liturgy for Memorial Mass, President’s Reception, Adoremus Te II and the Communion Breakfast 

Development 

• Membership brought in $86,073 and 5 new Lifetime members. The Annual Appeal raised $303,923. Major Gifts came in at $100,400 and 

Special Events brought in $78,550 

• The Spring Annual Appeal added 124 new first time donors and 125 donors made gifts greater than their 2008 gift 

• Tree of Life in Upper McShain was full; as such, two branches with 97 blank spaces were added with 19 new leafs were engraved 

• Spring Golf Classic (RiverCrest) raised over $9,200 and the 21 st Annual Dr. Don Gallagher Memorial Golf Outing (Westover) raised $10,500 

• The Good Shepherd Club added 6 new members. Planned Giving has a new PowerPoint presentation being used for “Faith & Finance” sessions, 

on Saturdays, hosted by volunteers from the Development Council’s Planned Giving Committee 

• Dedication of the Pieta was successful. The wall and more than 20 pavers have been named raising more than $17,000 

• First Blessing Tree Remembrance Ceremony in December was successful. 

• Dedication of the Guardian Angel statue event encompassed 100 individuals 

• Remembrance Mass was held and 200 people attended 

• Communion Breakfast: Ticket sales were $8,500 with $6,490 in sponsorships and 200 attendees

• Created and initiated new one-day retreat which integrated the Our Lady of Guadalupe devotion into format of Spirit Power retreat during

• Conceived and developed Blessing Tree Remembrance Ceremony honoring the lives of loved ones during the Advent season 

• Created a new midweek retreat for contemplative prayer; which will now become a once-a-year retreat for men and women 

• Created, initiated and coordinated a new charismatic retreat model with a nationally-recognized retreat director 

• Created a new Email Blast format for once-a-month communication with retreatants –now, it is graphically appealing and user-friendly
