Course Description:
This course assumes no prior academic knowledge of accounting, therefore, we include principles
and practices of accounting, i.e. applications of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP),
presentation of information for external reporting purposes, management analysis, decision-making,
planning and control.
We will introduce you to the concepts of financial accounting and its underlying assumptions. We
will discuss the uses and limitations of the financial statements. Procedural aspects of accounting
will be discussed in order to enhance your understanding of the content of the financial statements.
However, the emphasis of the class in on using accounting information in the evaluation of business
performance and risk. We will grade your achievements in this course from your development of the
ability to read and to analyze and interpret financial statements and to use this and other types of
information in business making decision for planning and controlling.
We focus on the development, analysis, and use of accounting reports to provide an understanding of
what these reports contain, what assumptions and concepts accountants use to prepare them, and why
they use those assumptions and concepts. This course stresses the ability to apply accounting
concepts to real world cases, which by their very nature are complex and ambiguous. In addition to
traditional introductory topics, other topics may include mergers and acquisitions accounting, free
cash flow and financial statement analysis.

Learning Accounting :
Experience in this course suggests the following advice:
Classes make extensive use of problems assigned from the text. A selection of the
assignments is discussed in each class. You will learn accounting better (and will perform
better on the problem-oriented exam) if you do the assigned reading prior to each class. This
is not an idle warning.
Accounting is a part of financial reporting and analysis. This course is not organized like a
survey course. Each class builds on what you have learned in previous classes. You
therefore must keep up to data, or you will find subsequent classes difficult.
This course requires large amount of time devoted to both reading and working on problems.
The reading of all chapter assigned should be prepared before class and it is a “must”
responsibility of students to read them because this course is the extensive course.
