Supply Capability 

The centrally located Melton Mowbray manufacturing site supplies stairs to 

all parts of the UK. Deliveries are made direct to site using our national 

distribution network palletised, in protective shrink-wrap, with first-fix and 

second-fix parts labelled separately and colour-coded for ease of identification 

on site. For special delivery options, contact your Account Manager. 

The Melton Mowbray manufacturing facility was built for volume stair 

manufacturing and has the capacity to supply to fast lead-times, on time - 

even during peaks of business. There are also dedicated bespoke production 

lines for more specialist stairs such as common flights.

Setting the Highest Standards 

Technical Performance & Compliance 

Stairs, under Building Regulation Part K, must meet the criteria 

of load bearing capacity and the resulting deflection, for which 

limits are set. There are separate requirements for the ‘trunk’ 

and ‘baluster’ assembly. The criteria are different for a single 

occupancy dwelling to the higher requirements of a multi 

occupancy dwelling or ‘common flight’, where one stair serves 

multiple dwellings (e.g. a block of flats or certain commercial 

buildings). 

Common flights may also need to meet the 

criteria set out in Approved Document M 

(Disabled Access) and possibly the 

requirements of BS8300 and the Disability 

Discrimination Act (DDA) 

The BWF are active in ensuring that 

the Stairs Technical Committee review 

building regulations applicable for 

stairs. This results in feedback and 

comments being passed to the 

Department of Communities 

and Local Government. The 

Brown book was introduced 

to provide guidance on 

Building Regulations for stair 

manufacturer members.

Environmental standards 

Timber is a naturally renewable material. Beautiful, light but strong, it 

also offers a way to reduce CO 2 emissions that are the main cause of 

climate change. Growing trees absorb CO 2 plus the production and 

processing of wood is highly efficient, giving it an ultra-low carbon 

footprint, unlike some other building materials such as concrete or steel 

which require large amounts of energy to produce. 

JELD-WEN only source wood for stairs from CPET recognised certification 

schemes and offer FSC chain of custody certification upon request. 

JELD-WEN takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and has 

adopted the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard to 

maintain and ensure continual improvement of 

environmental performance.

New balustrade makes the difference 

for contemporary apartments 

Eight stylish new Duplex apartments at the award winning 

Ferry Village in Renfrew, Scotland have been differentiated 

from others in the area, thanks to contemporary new 

balustrading from JELD-WEN stairs. 

JELD-WEN developed the Liscard Metal Balustrade to 

complement its range of timber stairs and enable 

housebuilders to create distinctive, contemporary houses and 

apartments. This was certainly the case at Ferry Village, where 

Miller West Scotland has recently won an NHBC Pride in the 

Job award. 

Miller West Scotland has incorporated a number of distinctive 

features, such as the Liscard balustrade, as Harry Gaughan, 

Production Director of Miller West Scotland, explains:

The Liscard balustrade features a timber handrail - in a choice of oak, 

beech or pine, which is complemented by metal connectors and 

balusters in chrome and nickel finishes. This creates a focal point to 

any home, with the versatility to suit all interior decoration schemes.

New for Spring 2010 is the option of using JELD-WEN Quick-Lock installation 

system. Unique to JELD-WEN, this system means installation can be done in 

just one third of the time taken using traditional fixing methods – see page 25

Paint finishes 

Another time-saver for housebuilders is the option of having stairs part finished, with a 

3-part primer applied in factory controlled conditions, so all that’s needed is a simple 

top-coat applied on site, giving a perfect finish. 

Stair Reverberation and Noise Reduction 

JELD-WEN also has NEW acoustic solutions, reducing reverberation and noise 

transmission commonly found in new build stairs. As this is factory fitted, there’s 

no need for additional insulation to the staircase on site. 

Balustrading Solutions 

JELD-WEN offers fully assembled balustrading, to ensure a quick and easy fix on site. 

We can also provide demountable balustrade – meaning the balustrade can simply 

be removed to allow large furniture to be moved via the staircase and then locked back

In multi-occupancy buildings, concrete stairs have long been the 

solution to dealing with the requirements of Approved Document B 

(fire Safety) 2006 however, recently The Communities and Local 

Government (CLG) commissioned a project with a BRE-led 

consortium to assess the performance of timber stairs in the event 

of a fire and have concluded that suitably treated timber stairs will 

fulfil the required function in the event of a fire*

Recommendations 

In keeping with our quality policy, JELD-WEN ® offers 

the following guarantees on its products: 

10 year guarantee on all products against 

manufacturing defects. 

JELD-WEN ® will not accept 

responsibility for product that has been 

poorly installed or modified where the 

structural strength of the stairs is 

impaired. 

Chain of Custody Certification 

JELD-WEN ® are able to offer on request 

a full Chain of Custody FSC Certified 

stair specification. Please call us to 

discuss your requirements. 

Recommendations for the Handling; 

Storage; and Installation of Stairs 

Product Weight exceeds 15kg: This product weighs 

in excess of 15kg. Your own risk assessment can 

determine whether an assisted lift is required or 

even mechanical lifting arrangements will be 

required. Do not lift stairs by one string (top string if 

laid on edge). 

Storage of stairs: 

Stairs should be stored in a dry place, slightly 

raised from the ground, adequately protected 

from the weather and extremes of temperature. 

As with all internal joinery, stairs should not be 

fitted in a building which has not adequately 

dried out. Failure to maintain the moisture content 

as delivered may have a seriously detrimental 

affect on the stairs and how they fit. 

Fitting of stairs: 

Refer to the ’stair packing list’ and the 

’manufacturing worksheet’ and check that the 

works number is the same on the stair flight(s) 

and loose components. Confirm also that all 

components are present. We recommend newel 

posts be fitted ’dry’ and the stair offered into 

position. Be aware that load bearing newel posts 

need to be trimmed to length prior to installation 

(look for chisel-mark or two drill holes which 

denotes floor line). Check treads/newel posts are 

level and plumb. If a bull nosed step is to be fitted 

check length and fit, trim as required. 

Stairs are supplied assembled as far as practical, 

leaving final trimming of key components for 

exact fit on site. If fitting winder treads, again 

’dry’ assemble. Treads have been cut to size in our 

workshop but may need further trimming when 

installed. Check treads for level and fit. Risers will 

need to be cut to length and bevelled to fit 

angles. Treads and risers should be wedged and 

glued into the strings and pinned and blocked at 

newel posts where the riser meets 

the tread, always screw and glue into position 

to prevent ’squeaking’. (Refer to Fitting and Care 

Instructions for Winder Flight Stairs). 

If stairs start with a complex turn, i.e. a quarter 

space landing or tapered treads on first floor level 

and above, we recommend that decking overhang 

trimmer by 25mm to allow for support of first 

riser. Strings running against a wall should be 

securely fixed with screw fixings at approximately 

every 600mm and packed to prevent the fixings 

pulling the string off the treads and risers. 

Demountable Balustrade System: For installation 

and removal please refer to the easy to follow 

instructions and user guide. 

Notice to Carpet Fitters / Purchasers: 

Carpet gripper rods must not be nailed to 

the treads and risers. They must be screwed 

or glued only. We cannot accept responsibility 

for squeaking / damaged stairs if the gripper 

rods are not fixed in the correct manner.
