Welcome to the Spring edition of <strong>Thalgo</strong> <strong>News</strong>.<br />
PARIS<br />
<strong>2011</strong> heralds a new era for THALGO, with new branding and fresh new packaging.<br />
While we are focused on the future, we thought this was also a good opportunity to<br />
remind you about our heritage, which you can read about in Going back to THALGO’s<br />
roots on page 14. I recently took a look at THALGO through the ages, from its inception<br />
to its evolution over the last four decades and perused our library of pictures; it is truly<br />
inspirational to see the work and passion that has gone into making the THALGO<br />
brand what it is today and we owe our thanks to you, our customers, who shape our<br />
future and make our success.<br />
The change of season brings new product launches and promotions from THALGO,<br />
which you can learn about on pages 10-13. Inspired by the arrival of Spring, on page<br />
16 I outline my advice on how to reinvigorate your business with the new energy<br />
Spring brings.<br />
We hope you will enjoy catching up on the latest news from <strong>Thalgo</strong> Group brands<br />
Perron Rigot, Terraké, Ella Baché, Couleur Caramel and Les Fleurs de Bach. We work<br />
with fantastic brands and wonderful people, and we hope you enjoy working with<br />

CONFERENCE IN MONTE CARLO<br />
The bi-annual THALGO International Conference took place<br />
in Monte Carlo from 2nd-5th November 2010, attended by<br />
THALGO distributors from more than 60 countries. As well as<br />
exciting new launches for <strong>2011</strong>, CEO Mr Jean-Claude Sirop<br />
and Managing Director Bernard Sirop also presented plans for<br />
the future, which place THALGO firmly at the forefront of the<br />
spa and professional beauty market. During the economic<br />
downturn, not only has THALGO continued to innovate,<br />
expanding and strengthening its offering; it has also invested<br />
considerably in building the brand, to make sure it is in a strong<br />
position for the future.<br />

Excellence in Beauty<br />
Every year, THALGO recognises its top<br />
spas and therapists through an awards<br />
programme. The categories are Spa/Salon of the Year and<br />
Therapist of the Year. Shortlisted therapists are mystery<br />
shopped during April and the final winners are judged by<br />
Managing Director, Marian Green. Winners receive a trip to<br />
Paris with complimentary treatments at Villa THALGO, our<br />
flagship Paris day spa.<br />
Entry is now closed for this year’s awards. The winners will be<br />
announced in May at an awards ceremony for Platinum and<br />
Gold* customers in Central London.<br />

Beauty salon Inside & Out is expanding its business to offer<br />
spa treatments at Edinburgh airport using THALGO. Gavin and<br />
Lian McAdam have developed a cleverly designed unit, with<br />
treatments carried out inside and a retail area on the outside.<br />

in the ‘Escape’ area of Kallima Spa, a new development set<br />

Best Western Premier Moor Hall Hotel & Spa in Sutton<br />
Coldfield, West Midlands, is celebrating its 50th year of<br />
family ownership in <strong>2011</strong>. Michael Webb acquired Moor Hall<br />
in 1961 when the hotel had 17 bedrooms. Since then, Moor<br />
Hall has developed to its present complex of 82 bedrooms,<br />
eight conference rooms and a leisure centre with indoor<br />
pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. The THALGO Platinum<br />
status spa at the hotel opened six years ago and has recently<br />
opened its fourth treatment room to meet high demand<br />
for treatments.<br />

CRUISE LINERS<br />
THALGO has won a contract to become the exclusive spa<br />
brand on board selected Fred Olsen Cruise Liners, sailing on<br />
world cruises to include the Caribbean. Fred Olsen Cruise<br />
Liners is still a family business with origins dating back to 1848.<br />
THALGO has appointed a new PR agency to help increase<br />
press coverage and consumer awareness in the UK. Pure<br />
PR is one of the UK’s top beauty PR agencies and is based<br />
near Oxford Circus, close to the major publishing houses.<br />
<strong>Thalgo</strong> UK Managing Director Marian Green said of the<br />
appointment, “I am delighted to be working with Pure<br />
PR, who I am sure will achieve great results for THALGO<br />
and I look forward to seeing more press coverage for<br />
our great brand. THALGO is a longstanding favourite of<br />
many beauty editors and Pure will be building on this, to<br />
consolidate awareness, re-educate journalists about the<br />
brand, and significantly increase coverage.”<br />

The new year sees new THALGO spa openings in<br />
Central London, with the Chuan Spa at Langham<br />
Hilton near Oxford Circus and the spa at St James’<br />
Health Club off Piccadilly set to open in early <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
St James’ Health Club will also be offering <strong>Thalgo</strong><br />
Group brand Terraké.<br />

NEW LOGO<br />
The first step was to take a fresh look<br />
at the logo. The oval and wave have<br />
been removed and the typography<br />
re-worked, to give a modern logo<br />
that really stands out.<br />
PACKAGING<br />
Packaging is the first thing the<br />
customer sees on the shelf and it<br />
influences their experience of the<br />
product and the brand, so this was the<br />
next thing to consider. The challenge<br />
was to improve the packaging while<br />
keeping it recognisably THALGO.<br />
The new outer packaging is natural and<br />
matte with an iridescent effect, making<br />
it more high-end and more in keeping<br />
with our premium spa brand positioning.<br />
Colour segmentation has also been<br />
introduced to help consumers navigate<br />
the range and to differentiate the product<br />
categories on the shelf.<br />
Bottles, jars and tubes have also been<br />
redesigned.<br />
The first appearance of the new<br />
packaging will be the new Suncare range,<br />
followed by Anti-ageing (scheduled for<br />
launch in September). Following that,<br />
all packaging will be updated.<br />

While we are focused on looking to the future, THALGO’s heritage is<br />
also one of its greatest assets. With that in mind, let’s take a look back<br />
at THALGO’s history and the inspiration for the brand: the sea...<br />
THE ORIGINAL MARINE<br />
BEAUTY AND SPA BRAND<br />
Based in the South of France, THALGO<br />
has over forty years of expertise in<br />
drawing on the riches of the sea to<br />
develop highly effective skincare products<br />
and exceptional professional beauty<br />
treatments.<br />
THALGO was founded back in 1964 when<br />
a French pharmacist conducted research<br />
into utilising marine algae to treat medical<br />
and cosmetic concerns. His initial aim was<br />
to manufacture seawater and algae-based<br />
products to alleviate skin conditions such<br />
as scarring, eczema and psoriasis.<br />
The name “THALGO” is an amalgamation<br />
of “thalassotherapy” and “algae" and<br />
was first registered in 1968. Ever since<br />
the 1800s, treatments using seawater and<br />
algae-based products have been highly<br />
popular in Europe and have long been<br />
recognised for their amazing abilities<br />
to treat wide-ranging problems such as<br />
arthritis, rheumatism, skin conditions and<br />
blood circulation disorders. The French<br />
coined the term "thalassotherapy",<br />
which is the treatment of the body<br />
using seawater. It is considered to be<br />
so beneficial and effective that it was<br />
prescribed by doctors in France as a<br />
medical “cure”. Sadly, thalassotherapy is<br />
not available in the UK primarily due to<br />
the considerable financial implications of<br />
building an authentic thalassotherapy spa<br />
(it must be next to the sea so that vast<br />
quantities of seawater can be pumped<br />
into the spa).<br />
Initially, thalassotherapy used crushed or<br />
pulverised seaweeds, which were then<br />
made into poultices, in its therapies. The<br />
breakthrough came in 1966 with THALGO’s<br />
development of “Micronisation” and the<br />
subsequent registration of a process<br />
patent and a medical patent. The scientific<br />
explanation of Micronisation is that<br />
with conventional pulverised marine<br />
algae, the tough and rubbery cell walls<br />
are simply flattened, liberating little more<br />
than their pigments, while Micronisation<br />

“explodes” the algae cells, allowing the<br />
dissolution of their mineral salts and trace<br />
elements in water. THALGO’s signature<br />

thalasso centres.<br />
There are 25,000 different species of<br />
algae. THALGO uses many different<br />
types in their product ranges, which<br />
contain high proportions of vitamins,<br />
minerals and trace elements known for<br />
their detoxifying, healing and rebalancing<br />
properties. The algae are harvested off<br />
the coast of Brittany only at the equinoxes,<br />
when nutrients are at their maximum.<br />
In 1975, the Simone Weil directive came<br />
into force, stating that only a chemical<br />
engineer or a pharmacist could make and<br />
sell cosmetic products, creating a strong<br />
demand for professionally-made products<br />
for beauty salons.<br />
With this new directive in place and<br />
the continuing success of the MMA<br />
innovation, from 1978 onwards THALGO<br />
branched into the cosmetology field<br />
with the introduction of plant, fruit and<br />
protein-based lines.<br />
In 1981, the Laboratory and production<br />
moved to Roquebrune-sur-Argens in the<br />
South of France and THALGO recruited<br />
its first overseas distributors - with <strong>Thalgo</strong><br />
UK as one of the first.<br />
Today, THALGO has the widest range of<br />
marine skincare to meet any skin or beauty<br />
concern, whether it is detox, firming, antiageing,<br />
rebalancing, purifying, weightloss<br />
or simply relaxation.<br />
THALGO is currently available in over 500<br />

You may have decided to implement a<br />
new idea or pledged to do something<br />
for your business – do you need to give<br />
those resolutions a renewed focus<br />
Here are some tips for putting a<br />
<strong>spring</strong> back into your business. To<br />
put any change into practice requires<br />
determination, perseverance and<br />
commitment to what you want to<br />
achieve, so you will be needing the<br />
increased energy and lease for life<br />
that Spring brings!<br />
Revisit your business plan; what needs<br />
to change since you last looked at<br />
it What were your achievements in<br />
2010 Ask some tough questions and<br />
be prepared to learn from things that<br />
didn’t work as you had hoped. As your<br />
business grows, you need to change and<br />
grow along with it. Think about your USP<br />
(Unique Selling Point) and don’t lose<br />
sight of it; use this as a feature in all your<br />
marketing and promotional activity.<br />
A solid marketing plan ensures sales<br />
and without sales you do not have<br />
a business. Create a plan to include<br />
monthly promotions, and deliver it to<br />
your team so they are fully prepared.<br />
This will help to keep things fresh and<br />
make sure you always have something<br />
happening. Having a plan will make the<br />
whole process a lot easier, so I strongly<br />
recommend it!<br />
Learn Be mindful of your weaknesses<br />
and work upon improving them. If<br />
you can’t do it, find the right people<br />
who can. Learn about new treatments,<br />
products and trends. Research and<br />
attend shows or seminars. Try out new<br />
treatments yourself, conduct surveys<br />
and ask friends for their opinions.<br />
Develop a passion for learning - one<br />
common denominator can be found in<br />
all successful business owners and that<br />
is a passion for learning.<br />

Give your team a boost A business<br />
is nothing without its people, so give<br />
them a lift with a team-building activity.<br />
Make sure they are well rewarded and<br />
incentivised, and make sure they have<br />
opportunities for development and<br />
learning, which is key to motivation.<br />
Reconnect with your customers by<br />
carrying out a survey, holding a customer<br />
event or renewing communication with<br />
a newsletter. Spend time with them, find<br />
out what they want, what they need and<br />
work on your business to provide this;<br />
it will help you to make good business<br />
decisions. Your customers are looking<br />
for solutions to their problems. Although<br />
you are selling services and products,<br />
solutions are the key to happy customers<br />
who will return.<br />
Reassess your financials It’s important<br />
to understand your financials – cash flow<br />
and profitability must come first so set<br />
aside some time every week to keep<br />
tabs on where the business is sitting.<br />
Make a forecast of where you want to<br />
be, track your actual turnover and make<br />
any necessary adjustments.<br />
Refresh your knowledge of regulatory<br />
<strong>issue</strong>s It’s a good idea to make sure<br />
you are up-to-date on regulation - check<br />
which licences, registrations and permits<br />
you need, and consider subscribing to an<br />
employment law advice line.<br />
Network There is no need to be<br />
alone - take advice from a business<br />
coach, join trade associations or groups<br />
such as LinkedIn; utilise social media<br />
and webinars. Link with other local<br />
businesses where you can promote each<br />
other. Attend trade shows, conferences<br />
and local business networking groups.<br />
Touch base with your suppliers<br />
Do you know what’s new with the<br />
brands you stock Have they sent you<br />
information on what’s happening in<br />
<strong>2011</strong> Your suppliers can offer support<br />
in many ways and will work with you to<br />
understand your business and make the<br />
most of your resources.<br />
Ultimately, it’s about refreshing and<br />
re-energising your business. It will be<br />
infectious for your staff and will reap<br />

or show up at their next appointment<br />
and tell you they got pimples or in-grown<br />
hairs; suggest something to help prevent<br />
and treat the problem before it occurs.<br />

Madame Ella Baché was a pioneer in<br />
skincare innovation. She launched the<br />
first hot wax in Europe in 1930, was the<br />
first to use AHAs in cosmetics, and the<br />
first to put an ingredient listing on her<br />
products. The discovery of hyaluronic<br />
acid’s moisturising properties can<br />
also be put down to her R&D work.<br />
A Hungarian chemist living in Paris and<br />
a contemporary of Estée Lauder and<br />
Helena Rubinstein, Ella Baché discovered<br />
the beneficial properties of food-based<br />
active ingredients and their ability to<br />
restore skin’s radiance.<br />
After working for cosmetic brands<br />
developing formulas, she set up her<br />
own line from her beauty salon on the<br />
famous Rue de la Paix in Paris, in 1936.<br />
Over 70 years later, the brand remains<br />
strong and true to her values of marrying<br />
science with nutrition to create beauty<br />
recipes women would enjoy sharing and<br />

The classic Ella Baché product and still a bestseller today, Crème Tomate<br />
is a radiance boosting moisturiser full of antioxidants from tomatoes. The<br />
hugely popular range based on tomatoes is set to be expanded in <strong>2011</strong><br />
with an eye cream, a cleanser and a body product.<br />
ETERNITY ANTI-AGEING<br />
The Ella Baché range also includes Eternity, complete anti-ageing for<br />
age 50+ featuring olive oil, also set to be expanded in <strong>2011</strong> with an<br />

Soho. Bruce shared tips and tricks as well as presenting the new seasonal collection<br />
and the new Hydracoton foundation range. Therapists practised their new skills<br />
during workshops, and a fun and informative day was had by all.<br />
