R.A. Diaz-Varela et al. 2010. Assessment of conservation status in managed chestnut forest 203 behaviour of predictors and chestnut forest quality classes. Focusing on high quality stands, they occur mainly on quite steep slopes and also tend to occur at altitudes higher than 600 m showing a relative low textured and low greenness value. This is consistent with the theoretical confinement of the chestnut traditional forest to mountain or marginal areas, where agricultural activity is constrained by the environment, and also indicates that a relative low degree of heterogeneity in the patches might be used as an indicator of well preserved stands. Good quality stands can also occur on more textured (heterogeneous) patches, but in this case corresponding to small plots, fact that could be interpreted as the separation between large heterogeneous forest patches with lower relative chestnut coverage and small plots dominated by chestnut but with some heterogeneity in the stand characteristics.
