Good summer for the ferries
How did the ferry traffic fare this summer
We put the questions to three of the city’s shipping lines.
Scandlines
Henrik Rörbaek, Helsingborg-
Helsingør Line Manager:
“It was better than expected. We
have noted a marked increase during
the first eight months of the year. Shorttime
travel has increased substantially,
and this is one of the factors leading to
the improvement in the market situation.
Above all, the increase is in traffic
from Denmark to Sweden, which is
naturally related to the rate of exchange
between the two currencies. In addition,
we have been making intensive
marketing efforts in Denmark, and
these campaigns have produced
positive results.”
HH-Ferries
Jon Cavalli-Björkman, departing
Deputy Managing Director and Marketing
Executive:
“Our freight and passenger volumes
have both increased. A number of major
players have worked hard on marketing
the Öresund traffic, which has yielded
growth of the total market. In addition
to the Öresund Bridge, the Öresund
trains are also competing with the ferries.
We must use the weak Swedish krona
to attract Danes to Sweden. Germany
has traditionally been the destination of
Danish shoppers, just as Denmark has
been to us Swedes. It’s a matter of trying
to change habits, but that takes time.”
Sundsbussarna shuttle ferries
Per Svensson, Local Manager:
“The number of passengers has been
roughly the same as in previous
summers. The Swedish market has
declined, while the Danish market has
grown. Our combined tickets, that
include visits to Sofiero Palace and the
Fredriksdal Museum of Natural History,
have proved to be a successful venture.
Although a growing number of travellers
use their cars, the number of one-day
excursions to the nearby attractions in
the Öresund region is increasing. Our
location and accessibility are very well
suited to these one-day travellers.”
”Guldkärnan” Prize for the Port
The Marketing Association in Helsingborg awards its ‘Guldkärnan’ Prize
every year to persons, companies or organizations that have marketed
Helsingborg and the north-western region of Skåne in a material way. The
Port of Helsingborg was one of the four winners this year.
Many contenders
This year’s ‘Guldkärnan’ Prize attracted
a total of more than 30 nominations, and
the jury had to do its work in stages.
“The fact that the Port of Helsingborg
has been voted this year’s European Port
naturally contributed to the award of the
Prize,” confirms Mats Böllner at the
Marketing Association in Helsingborg.
Proud Chief Executive
The prize afforded great pleasure in
the Port of Helsingborg.
“We are devoting resolute work to
strengthening our brand name and making
us better known as a competitive
company. The ‘Guldkärnan’ Prize
proves that our joint efforts have
yielded results. It is a great team prize,”
says Chief Executive P.O.Jansson.
Prize-giving ceremony
“The ‘Guldkärnan’ Prizes were
handed over in conjunction with the
Commerce and Industry Party at the
Marina Plaza Hotel on 10 October. The
other winners were Tina Nordström,
Vasatorps Golf Club and Brandsta City
Släckers. The jury consisted of
representatives of Helsingborg City,
Idéforum, Chamber of Commerce of
Southern Sweden, Svenskt Näringsliv,
and the Helsingborg Dagblad
newspaper.
This year´s first cruise ship
The cruise that includes Helsingborg
is known as the Scandinavian Splendor
and, in addition to calling in Helsingborg,
the 12-day cruise also features
visits to Amsterdam, Kristiansand,
Copenhagen, St.Petersburg and Stockholm.
The six-star “Crystal Symphony” was the 47th cruise ship
to call in Helsingborg since the first-ever cruise ship visit
by the “Royal Viking Sun” in 1994. So the city and port
have hosted more than 40 000 passengers, who are
estimated to have spent upward of SEK 40 million on
shopping and excursions.
Ahead of schedule
The ship’s passengers and her
Norwegian master, Captain Glenn
Edvardsen, were evidently curious to
find out what Helsingborg had to
offer. The estimated time of arrival
was 0800 hours, but the ship was
already tied up at the Grain Quay of
the Southern Harbour at 0700.
A hearty welcome
On her arrival in Helsingborg, the ship
was met by bright blue skies and brilliant
sunshine, and also by a water-fountain tug,
drumcorps with majorettes, flags and flower
girls. This way of welcoming cruise ships
and their passengers has been highly
appreciated and has become a classic for
visits to the Port of Helsingborg.
Popular excursions
During the morning, most of the American
guests visited the Kärnan Fort, Sofiero
Palace park, the “Ramlösa brunn”
site, the Råå fishing village, Kullaberg
nature reserve with a stop at the Flickorna
Lundgren café, and Krapperups
Palace. In the afternoon, many of the
passengers went for a shopping spree in
the city centre.
Faith in the future
Cruise ship visits to Northern Europe
are not as frequent as they were before
the outrage in the USA on September
11. The numbers of cruise ships calling
at many ports have dropped dramatically,
but the shipping lines and the ports
expect to see light at the end of the dark
tunnel by next year. For Helsingborg, the
situation is already good, but there is
hope of even more calls next year.
However, it must be borne in mind that
growth in the cruise ship market is not
automatic and demands many years of
hard work.
A new crane arrives
Early sunday morning September
8, after 42 days at
sea, the new container
crane arrived in the West
Harbour without mishap.
The container crane that had been
under way from Sicily for 42 days is 58
metres high and weighs 830 tonnes. The
barge carrying the crane was towed by
the “Sanantonio Primo” tug. Transfer of
the crane from the barge to the quay
took around one hour, against the
expected two hours. Four special trailers
were placed under the corners of the
crane in preparation for landing it. The
crane was then jacked up on the trailers
and was rolled ashore. The crane has a
lifting capacity of 45 tonnes and will
assure our customers of even higher
efficiency.
Unifeeder celebrates 25 years
Unifeeder was founded 25 years ago.
It is now obvious that the two owners,
Peter Bohnsen and Tonny Paulsen, had
then embarked on a very successful venture.
Unifeeder is now the biggest feeder
operator in the Nordic countries, with
an annual turnover approaching 1 million
TEUs.
Helsingborg was one of the ports of
call right from the start, although initially
fairly irregularly and with only a few containers
to handle. Unifeeder then
developed very favourably for Helsingborg,
with at least seven calls a week in
the port and with an average turnover of
about 200 TEUs per ship. In 1997, the
Port of Helsingborg awarded Unifeeder
its prestigious annual Öresund Prize.
The jury justified its award as follows:
“The Prize was awarded to Unifeeder
in recognition of a well developed and
efficient feeder system. This has enabled
businesses in the Öresund region to put
to rational use the global networks of
the trans-oceanic lines. The frequent,
fast and reliable Unifeeder service
represents a very important transport
link between Swedish, Danish and
continental ports.”
We at the Port of Helsingborg extend
our best wishes to Unifeeder for
continued positive development in
years to come.
1000 fifth-years students visit the Port
The Port of Helsingborg issued
invitations in mid-May to all fifth-year
students in Helsingborg for a study
day. This is the seventh year in a row
that such a visit has been arranged.
“Helsingborg in 2050” was the theme
of the homework drawing assignment
given to the students. The drawings,
together with the answers to ten
competition questions, were appraised
by a jury, and the youngsters submitting
the three winning entries were
invited together with their teachers to
the prize-giving ceremony onboard the
“Aurora af Helsingborg”. The jury
justified the winning award as follows:
“A fabled world with special visions of
the future, in which the elements of air
and water have an important
significance.” Class 5 PT at Adolfbergs
School was the fortunate winning class,
whereas class 5-6 Björken, at Maria Park
and class 5B at Ättekulla School won
second and third places respectively.
The companies Scandlines, HH-
Ferries, Sundsbussarna, Börje Jönsson
Åkeri AB and the Port had set up different
stations in the area around the
Ocean Harbour. The pupils were first
given a guided tour of the Port, and were
then free to walk from station to station.
Judging by the evaluations, the arrangement
was a great success this year
too.
TransRussia 2002
For the seventh year in succession,
the Port of Helsingborg exhibited at
the annual TransRussia transport and
logistics fair in Moscow. This fair is considered
to be the biggest annual fair of
its type in Europe. This year’s event
attracted around 7000 registered visitors
from 32 countries, and 350 exhibitors
from 26 countries. For the past few years,
the Port of Helsingborg has shared its
stand with the Port of Århus.
A decade of ”Aurora”
During these 10 years, the “Aurora af
Helsingborg” has made 158 000 trips
without any major incident. The record
for the number of passengers per day is
around 20 000. During the summer
months, holiday-makers travelling to
and from Sweden take the best of the
trips across the Sound to relax for a while.
The Scandlines “Aurora af Helsingborg”
ferry has proved to be a major
success during her decade of service
between Helsingborg and Helsingør.
She is an enormous cargo carrier, in spite
of the scepticism in the early days
concerning her relatively “small” cargo
area.
Captain Karl Birgander, who was
involved from way back when the ship’s
keel was laid, is pleased with the high
efficiency she has demonstrated during
these 10 years.
She can be loaded and unloaded on
three lanes simultaneously, and her new
loading/unloading system is among the
most modern in the world.
New simulators and computerized
exercises enable new crews to become
thoroughly familiar with the ship before
being ready to manoeuvre her in reality.
By continual maintenance and
refurbishment, the interior of the ship
has been steadily improved, and the
safety and enjoyment of passengers and
crew have been boosted.
Her nautical positioning system has
also been improved.
“She has been built for a life cycle of
at least 25 years. So she still has 15 years
left on the Helsingborg - Helsingør run,”
concludes Captain Karl Birgander.
